What will NXWM have gained from operating the vehicle. Did they have a specific reason for using it?

May be it gave them a sense of how Volvo vehicles now work under working conditions. With the problems currently going on with ADL, you can't fault them for looking elsewhere

Not in the daytime.

Some late night journeys do. Some 907 boards include a late night 914 journey and vice versa
