express services on main roads out of brum

Timesaver started to be used on Deregulation Day - 26 October 1986.  Most services were new, but by no means all.  Most Timesaver services were operated by the DP Metrobuses (they all started life in silver Timesaver livery), but a few Leyland National DPs also received Timesaver livery for the 967 and 998 IIRC.

The initial Timesaver network was: -

900   Coventry - Airport - Birmingham - Halesowen - Hasbury
901   Birmingham - A38 - Lichfield - Walsall
907   Walsall - Cannock - Hednesford
926   Birmingham - Dudley - Gornal Wood (peaks only)
926A Birmingham - Dudley - Sedgley (peaks only)
951   Bearwood - Birmingham - Walsall - Bloxwich
962   Birmingham - Tyburn Road - Collector Road - Chelmsley Wood
963   Birmingham - Longbridge - Rubery - Gannow
966   Wolverhampton - Walsall - Aldridge - Sutton Coldfield - Erdington - Collector Road - Chelmsley Wood - Birmingham Airport
967   Birmingham - Castle Vale (peaks only)
979   Birmingham - Smethwick - West Bromwich - Wednesbury - Bilston - Wolverhampton
998   Birmingham - Kingstanding - Pheasey

Of these, only the 900 and 966 ran seven days a week - the others ran Monday - Saturday daytime except where shown.  The 966 was actually going to run 24/7 during the summer of 1987 but WMT (understandably) changed their mind before that was due to start.

I have a feeling that the 907 actually run by normal buses, possibly due to interworking with other Walsall - Hednesford services.  Can anyone remember?

Back to the subject of limited stop/express services, would the pershore road benefit from an express route, limited stop between Cotteridge (Kings Norton Station) & Birmingham, terminating in Hawkesley

Doesn't the 84 serve those areas, or near enough to those areas.

If the 84 was extended to Birmingham and the 636 was cut to QE it's sort out the emissions problem too.

I think the majority of the main NXWM corridors would benefits from limited stop services as the 51/X51 example. It gives passengers are choice of whether to use the slower stopping service or the faster limited stop service. This based of whether passengers are travelling end to end or between intermediate points

Do you suggest extra limited stop services or reducing current frequency slightly and using the buses for a limited service? I think that the 957 would benefit with more publicity. It already operates with full loadings but is still not well known in Solihull.

If South Birmingham got investment in high spec vehicles for the X62/64 & 900/957 and a lot of publicity, I think theyd be just as busy as the X51.

The only routes I remeber interworking in Cannock/Hendsford were & thats if they interworked

950/951/951A/952/952A/953 (Birmingham - Walsall - Cannock) but they all took diffrent routes to cannock/hendsford

The X51 works because it uses fast roads which by-pass congested spots like Perry Barr.  Likewise the 902 group, and the X62/X64 and 900/957 use dual carriageways which allow them to overtake all-stops buses.

Unfortunately most other main roads in Birmingham are single carriageway and the traffic is much slower, so would express services be much quicker than all-stops services?

Service 907 at peak times travel along the side of Dual Carrige way towards to Sutton & same for 900/957 they travel along the Coventry Road


Couldnt the 902 group at peaks use "Not In Service" on there Digi blinds an go along the 115 route becuase at peaks the 902/904/905/914/915 all group together on ther Expressway,

The Hagley Road for example is dual carriageway all the way from Birmingham - Quinton, which includes some sections with bus lanes, even just having limited services/in addition to full stopping services would reduce the journey times due to it not having to stop so often.

A No 9 limited stop service could also use the Quinton Expressway i.e. No stop between Jeffersons & Manor Way as the 900 (Hasbury), 19, 19S originally used. There will also be traffic bottle necks on any route without full bus priorities

Quite a few routes at Peak times would benift from using Expressways & Dual carrigeways, as it would speed up time

Yeah I think so, but wasn't there a 590A and 590C.
