Interestingly, there seemed to be quite a few E400s on the 246 today, saw 5 departures from Stourbridge today and 4 of them were E400s and the other 1706.

This is because PB were lacking buses today and THE EXTENSION to SIX WAYS ASTON was suspended meaning passengers were NOT informed so no bus goes there leaving them stranded if wanting to go around that area
I;d thought a B10L was wider than a Solo i presume to fit around Hamstead

It would be tight but im sure you can get a B10L around the extension to Six Ways Aston

Thats what i thought! Although i spotted it on Birmingham New Road as it was travelled towards Wolverhampton so don't know if it did a full 126 or an E journey
Today,
2082 was on the 9, with 2009 on the 82! Easy to remember I guess ;)
Also, 4003 was on the 126, think it was on all day so possibly the first time a TWM/NXWM Spectra has been in Birmingham in a while!
Meanwhile (and definitely an all day board), 5512 has been on the 126, rode the 19:25 from Wolves and did the full route to Birmingham, then back to Bearwood.
I also saw a B7RLE on the AG5, but didn't catch fleetnumber.
Just to add from my post and to confirm matts post 5512 i belive was on all day and evening

Seriously! That is rediculous however at least it isn't another spectra like yesterday. It should be 2-3 Unbranded B5's on the 59 and 2 on the 1

Doesn't the 51 & 934E/935A interwork in the evenings?
There are 15 PVR 51 running boards. And 12 branded buses.
A lot of 51 running boards interwork 934/935A about 5 running boards. it's hard for the allocator to keep non branded vechile a on theses boards.

822 - 127 to Blackheath, whilst I was on Diversion.
4819 - 120 to Dudley, walking on Colmore Row.
4489 - with strange bck display, showing '7' as '007'
808 - 24 to Quinton Terminus
Which, to be fair, I saw it on two occasions:
1st. The bus wasn't in service at the Quinton Terminus
2nd. Just as I got onto my bus, I saw it again, on service 24 to Woodgate Valley.

Strictly speaking, they are allowed when used on any service that has a frequency of two buses per hour or less (every 30 mins or greater).
Still, 4112 was on the 37 yesterday, when it really shouldn't have been, as that has a 5 minute frequency (12 buses per hour).

Strange that, I would have thought the 126 was actually quite a quick route and didn't really stop all that much (maybe just because it's been a while since I've travelled on it and I forgot what its like)
The 126 has some quick running all day but its still stop start stop start for most of the day, ive never done early mornings but i know sunday nights in particular passenger use is low and the traffic lights are kinder so you just cruise and in the case of some Tridents, screaming all the way home :D

The bridge at Bradford place is 10.6

Sunday service on the 126 can vary with Start-Stop traffic. Sometimes the bus can just thrash flat out and on busy sundays you can get stuck in queues at traffic lights.
If you catch the 126 at peak times the start-stop trafffic can be just as worse as routes like the 1,59,529.which are start-stop routes good for hybrids

4680 on the
It is and it isn't. B7RLE's are fairly common on the 276 and should be booked on Sundays too
I know the 276 is fully B7RLE operated on Sundays which interworks with the 243/4 Evenings.
I wondered as its usually Mercs Mon-Sat but i have more B7RLE's recently
I was called out tonight, for a errand...
Whilst waiting at my bus stop to go home, I saw 2 unusual workings.
There was a 31A driven on a Scania Omnilink, but, just when it didn't get weirder... It was on 37 Branding.
And... on my way INTO the City, I saw what i believe was 4697 on route 935 or 936?

Matt just told me the 31A/37 do interwork evenings (Don't know this myself so if anyone can confirm that will be great).
4697 on the 935/6? 935/6 are WA routes and so is the 934 before someone trys say

Must've been a mistake. But, i defo did see 93_ on the display... The bus was too shaky, and was turning a corner, so i didn't get a proper glance.

They don't interwork as such, a couple of the early evening 37s go onto the 31A for the evening journeys. I presume they run to Solihull as the 37, then from the station head up Streetsbrook Road to Robin Hood Island to start as a 31A.

I very much doubt WB have a dart on service on a Sunday, more likely being used as a runaround or driver route training

Actually, the 83/89 have been converted to half decker half merc operation
Not sure the 83/89 needs double deckers could easily cope with single deckers.

Indeed, there seems to be usually at least 1 B7RLE on the 276 weekdays at the minute. But yes once the Tridents come in, I wouldnt be surprised to see the 276 become more of a B7RLE Operation. Probably more likely than the X96 because a good number of the Mercs are branded for that route.

It's not uncommon for there to be more Tridents on the 8/89 than B7RLEs Mon-Sat.
On Sunday, the 8 is run by Arriva I think, meaning NXWM run the 89 on its own, with 2 buses, B7RLEs and Omnilinks are common on Sundays. Last Sunday it was one B7RLE and one Omnilink

You just summed up the qualities which make the Mercs my favourite by a country mile! They feel tired now and living on borrowed time, which turns up their appeal factor to notch ten.
Mercs have a personality now. On the other hand youve got B7RLE plastic heaps which have less life in them than a loaf of bread
I like both buses, but as stated by 4778, Mercs are getting old; with several being withdrawn already.

If you were the allocator at Pensnett, which would you see as the more sensible option, sending a Merc out which will use more fuel, be less comfortable and be at risk of overheating or going up in flames - or a B7RLE, which will be comfortable, more fuel economic and safe?
I'm taking nothing away from the Mercs as I love many of them as Pensnett, but you get the idea.

In hot weather like this I'd say they could be. As I said though the main reason is fuel
Matt, Maybe it wad just a case of a B7RLE not being avaliable when the buses were being allocated so instead a merc was used
If i was a vehicle allocator I would be more inclined to put plastics out for the sake of professionalism and health and safety, maybe thats self conntradiction but this is a what would you do if scenerio.
If i kept my enthusiasts hat on then id be setting myself up for alot of stick by putting out more unreliable but much nicer buses (from an enthusiasts point of view)
As much as i dont want a bus to catch fire or have an accident etc etc, my views are from an enthusiasts perspective rather than professional alot of the time, i prefer the older buses and thats just me, thats all folks

First trident on an 81. Was it an 81E to Dudley From Wolverhampton?
I noticed this, and yes it was displaying 81E Dudley in Wolverhampton bus station. Whether this was a mistake by the driver I don't know (I've been on several 6/366's in the past showing 6 Mere Green, which were going the full route!)
There was also an OmniLink out on the 39 & B10Ls on both the 40/41 & 69 (not overly unusual, but shows B10's were available for the 34/38/39).
B10L on the 69 are the main allocation so not even slightly unusual

The 529 seemed to be in a bit of a melt down today! I noticed two sets of two buses running together (and no others) whilst driving between Wolverhampton & Willenhall, and there were two different comments on Twitter about waits, including one showing this pic https://twitter.com/Gazitude/status/357177549832454145/photo/1 of the queue
Personally, although the lady doing the NXWM Twitter is obviously trying her best, I feel it should be operated by someone in AVL who can respond directly with what's happened/happening (rather than direct people to write in to Customer Relations) & post more service updates etc., similar to how the Coventry Facebook is operated.

Matt, Although not a 529 i waited for a 59 for 20-25 mins and it still didn't turn up so i caught the 89 but just after a Merc Packed to the brim (No exaggeration there either!) turned up on a 59.

One of the few things going for the scanias-i noticed this on X62 before in the summer-is that the windows-3 big ones on each side allow for a lot of airflow through the bus which is good and is helped by the tinted windows-YW's enviro400s on the 50 were fine even on saturday upstairs in the sun. Sliders are best of course...

Suppose it's the same as in your car (if it doesn't have air conditioning), the blowers seem to just blow warm air around in weather like this. Would have been better for the driver to switch them off!

And once, a spectra appeared on the 583.
and the 9s run private through neterton to halesowen and vice versa also the schools run private to netherton then down Northfield road.
On the subject of ventilation, is there no low floor double deckers produced thesedays that have the front opening flap windows that the Metrobuses (& before that the Fleetlines & Bristol VR's!) used to have?
Windows open full & you sitting in the right place on the top deck were miles better than the bus air con.
I was reminded of this on Sunday when visiting Aston Manor & having a ride on ex WMPTE 4714 to Chasewater & back.
There was an Midland Red Olympian there as well which didn't have those windows & that dated from the 80's ISTR.
Was there any reason newer bus designs omitted those windows?

Not rare and unusual. It was mentioned long time ago that 24 route uses any vehicle [B7RLE's, Branded E200's or Tridents] in evening peak board.
It is only one afternoon board however that has this random allocation of whatever's knocking around in the garage. It is typically a B7RLE or E200 and always seems to be driven by the same bloke.

5514 on the 27A! Left Wolverhampton at 17:15 and i rode it to.Sedgley (Spotted it on the 59 an hour earlier so a route swap!) :)
And later did a 25 (as they interwork)
Thats a B5 2 nights on the trot on 25/27
Also
1 Branded 5410 on 126 seams they are becoming popular now on the 126
I know they interwork but wasn't sure which depature it would do on the 25.Must of been a breakdown so 5514 was drafted in off a 59 as it was on the 59.an hour earlier

Yes possibly so. That must be added as one of the rarest workings reported surely?
BC drivers cannot driver Gemini B7TL on the 900 because they have not training gemini. This morning, I saw Two Transbus working on the 900 but cannot catch fleetno.

New E400 will not on the bristol rd, 14, 97/A because there will get worst trashed on new buses. I'm not sure if e400 on the 45/47 will trashed?
In my 2 years of studying at Bournville College Further Education, I didn't saw any bus getting trashed on the Bristol Rd. As I used Bristol Road routes (63/98) regularly, it was busy and packed with students of BCFE and other passengers. Also, police community support officers do travel on these routes regularly, as police station located at Longbridge.
P.S: I see you are completely against BC garage in general, as I looked your posts through the profile didn't see any positive comments about this garage, all I saw moan, blame, and invalid statements like this one.

BC drivers cannot driver Gemini B7TL on the 900 because they have not training gemini. This morning, I saw Two Transbus working on the 900 but cannot catch fleetno.
If BC are short of buses and drivers, as has been stated already, the chances are they also loaned a driver who was Gemini trained.

Possible I guess as AG used to operate the 900. Would like to see a picture.
Just out of interest how different are controls etc on the various types of B7TLs? Do you need to be type trained on a Plaxton, ALX and Wright one if you driven one type?

Tony, is it co-incidence that all of these routes mentioned travel into Birmingham? Are there a selection of 'strategic' spares for groups of garages to do with the tunnel closures?

Correct. Each garage is having a couple of buses parked up with a driver available to drop into any gaps in any service at least until Wednesday. Destinations and ticket machines are being universally programmed so can do other routes as well as the buses own garage routes

Is 2134/5 on 22E to Harborne unusual?
Too right it is. B7RLEs on the 22/23 are themselves unusual but short workings to Harborne (other than the odd KE Five Ways school journey) are almost unheard of these days. In fact, there have been few short workings to Harborne, other than during the heavy snow, since Harborne garage closed in 1986.
Assuming these are to fill gaps in service due to delays caused by tunnel closures?

Think that now PE have spare Enviros, they seem to try and make the 141 100% DD, so it throws up 1 or 2 spare B7RLE and probably the X96 is the best to use them.
Same with WN i suppose, now they can't use DDs on the 81, they have to use Mercs or B7RLEs, they could have used B6s, but then you have that huge hill on Lodge Farm.

I've noticed B7RLE's are becoming more usual on the X96 and also WN's 81 and 82
Think that now PE have spare Enviros, they seem to try and make the 141 100% DD, so it throws up 1 or 2 spare B7RLE and probably the X96 is the best to use them.
Same with WN i suppose, now they can't use DDs on the 81, they have to use Mercs or B7RLEs, they could have used B6s, but then you have that huge hill on Lodge Farm.
Well B6's do put in appearances a fair bit ;)

Daily would be slightly too frequent IMO. I would say 2-3 Mercs per week and 2-3 B6LEs on the 40.

I have ridden them on the 1, 59, 126 (3 or 4 times now) and now the 27
Nath has done them on the 1, 59, 27A, 79 and now 27. First time he has done the full 27/A on a hybrid
638 on the 59, just passed a b5 the other way, what a comparison!
Not the first time i've rode a hybrid on a 27/A ;) Rode 5514 a few weeks back on the 27A from Wolverhampton-Sedgley

If you mean B5LH and E400H (the hybrids), none have been reported yet on the 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 26/26A/62, 28, 32, 81, 82 and 257.
A hybrid did a 256E to Kingswinford once. Also, one was reported on the 33, but was late night, so unsure if it did the 32 as well.

Alot of Vehicle swapping in WN today it seems. Do you mean 638 Ashley?
Yeah i meant 639, saw it on the ring road at something to 9 this morning on my way to work. As for the 62/A, you could use a transit minibus for half the journeys and still have empty seats, but a nice empty B6 is better :D
Yeah 81/2,26/62 aswell. B5's have appeared on the 1,11,25,27,27A,32/3,59,79,126 ,
256E and 529

The X96 is allocated 2 x B7's Monday to Saturday to the late night boards the 276 is merc operated
The 276 interworks with the 243/4 on some boards late night doesn't it. ?
569 on the 46 rare these days always seems to be enviro 200 operated.

By Late night boards, that means that they are the buses that remain on there from the daytime to operate the evening. Therefore, they will be placed to work certain running boards to make this happen.

Agreed, apart from 2153, that has personality
Today,
4801 - 276
1892 - 39
4021 - 255
1650 - 2
2083 - 243/4
5510 replaced 4021 on the 255 at Wolverhampton around 17:30. Rode it on the full 255 this evening, leaving Wolverhampton around 17:35 and arriving at Merry Hill about 18:55. Ridiculous to have a B5 going along all those narrow country lanes!

Why is it ridiculous? No different to a Spectra.
I was thinking that, Tony. They're the same dimensions virtually.
Let me rephrase it for him, it was very strange riding a B5 through the country lanes( Not very common and we are used to trident)

You say narrow, how so?
Narrow enough to think a bus route would go down there. Feels like your somewhere like Wales with fields and farmland
Could be single track roads :D
I also saw 1650 on the 2
All 2xxx series volvos are the same, silent plastic crap, although i have been told in vague detail that you can get a kickdown noise from them, some sort of button in the cab but thats all i was told and this individual isnt too reliable so

Surely the fact that they are quiet is a positive thing. I like the new B7RLEs they seem a well put together bus, like most Volvo / Wright products. Not sure why they get such a bad press from some.
Yes i do like Volvo B7RLE's and rode one on the 126 this afternoon. Matt thinks there is a difference between PE and WN B7RLE's but i can't tell any difference between them.
Im not saying theyre not ok for what they are but i think you can tell im an enthusiast that doesnt like new stuff
I think the speed difference is that WNs routes are more stop start where as some PN routes require abit more umph due to the hilly terrain of the area

Ok I understand where you're coming from. I guess I'm just getting old and like the quiet life these days.
19** - WA77 - I don't know if it's unusual?
477* - PB94 - Fairly unusual
I saw 4177 today, twice. I saw it first changing destinations from City to Coften Hackett, then amongst waiting for a bus, i saw it again, on the 45 to Longbridge
16** - WA5

Because a B5 is worth at least 30 times as much as a Spectra/Trident!
It's difficult to explain, but the idea of seeing a brand new double decker hybrid bus in service on roads like those is very strange to me.
5513 on 126 late this evening left Dudley towards Wolverhampton at 23:42
4199 was on the 140 two nights ago
New enviro on the 23 earlier
ALX400 on the 33 earlier too :)
Just a sidenote: rode my first BC hybrids on the 24 the other day visiting the bf in Harborne, got a B5 on the way there, E400H on the way back and I must say, they're very smart buses :)

They are all roughly the same height, plus putting a spectra out on it with a chance of breaking down. Better of with a hybrid.
Either way it is fair to say there is no Unusual workings at WN the only ones that must happen are B7's on the 6 and 10 as they require those vehicles.
If you want narrow winding country roads and double deckers i recommend a stagecoach to stagecoach west turf

As I said, you wouldn't understand. The sight of a B5 in service in the middle of the countryside is peculiar. Just my opinion.
And if a double decker on the 26 (which has happened once or twice) is not an unusual working, then I don't know what is.
E400H on the 62 wouldn't be unusual then BN? ;D

Well, yeah. But, it was only really the livery, tbh. It usually only goes out on the 97 or the 22/23/24 etc...

Because Matt has done both WN and BC's E400H and B5's he said to me that BC's E400h are better than WN's but WN's B5's are better than BC's (I agree)
I saw 4002 in dudley bus station on the 257 at 17:48 on wednesday anyone got any help on how and why this happened?
Theres no real reason as to why "unusual workings" happen, just adds abit of variety i suppose, good spot though

They happpen due to avalibillity of Buses.
On Walsall 4 there are 21 Running Boards
18 Branded Buses
one day only 12 Branded buses on
5 Unbranded Scaninas
4 B7RLE
If Certain bus types need repairing other Buses may appear just to keep Service running.
And if a bus breakdowns and a change bus come only avalibillity might be a branded bus.

Well the 256/7 are double deck routes and Spectras are double deckers! But seriously as someone previously said if a bus isn't avaliable (ie Trident) then another type is used. Got told at WN garage is that an allocator looks at a map of where the buses are parked. So say a trident on the 82, Will be because either a bus has broke down or a merc wasn't avaliable at the time the bus was set to leave the garage
You do occasionally get Spectras on the 256/7

Thats very true Nathan, and that is why unusual working can happen at any time of the day. First thing in the morning, in particular, you can't expect them to move half a dozen buses to get hold of the particular bus that is required, so the nearest suitable bus has to do.
Besides that, if every route had the same type of bus on it all the time, it wouldn't half be boring and we wouldn't have anything to talk about on the forum.

I am rather fond of the Spectra's, that comes from the days of them on the 139. I used to wait for one for the trip from Merry Hill back into Birmingham, there was at least one on there most days! Will hate it when they're withdrawn :'(

Valid, but by that logic Hybrids on the 255 in that sense is not unusual
I wish theyd put the odd Spectra on WN3 like back in the 543 days
5510 - 126 (I think. Was a hybrid)

Same. With the amount of B7RLE's that appear on the 11/32/33/59 you would think spectras would occasionally see service on the 2,3,4 etc. Last decker to appear on the 3 was infact 5514 on the 3 the other night
What night was that?

forgot exactly (Best look back through the thread) but was reported by Driver03 as on the Stafford Rd at 22:15 and replaced 2021 on there. 5514 had been on the 59 only a few hours beforehand

Not as strange as riding one in Wombourne/Kingswinford ;)
Well 5510 did already make it to kingswinford on a 256E journey ;)
In fact I think I saw + rode THE first ever B5 to enter Merry Hill!
Not the first NXWM Hybrid though obviously as 5415 had previously been on the 255
I think matt means strange seeing one in swindon village, the narrow bit, I was too tired to run, i made the 22:30 yesterday night, that was 2013 and we had trouble with two little hooded gremlins who lifted the bonnet open twice, happy days
Yes matt, one of the first people to travel on a B5 into merry hill, your on a roll this week with these firsts :)
