I saw a 14E to Stechford at 20:20 in Birmingham

Gareth

That particular 14E is timetabled I believe

It is. Spins round to run in service to town then back to BC. A straight through duty I think - three whole trips then that short one.

More then likely. The East Birmingham routes [/rotas] have numerous straight through duties. Surprising really as the rest of the garage are 100% split.

One thing Daimler Mercedes Benz are good at is producing excellent Diesel engines, I do miss the sound of the 0405n for all its faults you couldn't knock that 12 litre engine.

That is a nice duty, did it a few weeks ago, you get 30 min layover at Chelmsley Wood on the 3rd trip which makes the duty legal

Tony, i always thought the break had to be 45 minutes or is that just coach drivers?
Pensnett is my local garage. Favourite bus of all time is Fleetline 6360 (KON 360P).

I recall you telling me. It's the same story with the late night Chelmsley - 40min minimum lay over at Chelmsley on your first trip! Lovely job! And with the 97, you'd have no stop on the terminus, so nobody is there knocking on your doors. Annoying termini really grinds on me, Longbridge for one!

Straight through duties on Domestic need cumulative 45mins across your whole duty.

No. It's half hour break after 5.5 hours continuous driving. 45mins TOTAL if it's a straight through.

Yes, that duty is covered both ways, if you get the 30 min at Chelmsley Wood, that makes it legal to do 10 hours driving, if you arrive a few minutes late, there is enough break in the first two trips to take you past the 45min cumulative rule so you can do 8.5 hours. The duty is only about 7 hours driving anyway, so either rule applies

Tony, i always thought the break had to be 45 minutes or is that just coach drivers?

There are two main types of driving regulations - EU & Domestic. The type of work & length of the route primarily define which category applies (there are a few other factors)  - as a general rule Coach Driving comes under EU rules and bus driving under Domestic (although there are many exceptions!).

EU rules are much stricter and with regards to day to day working, a driver must take a 45 minute break after 4.5 hours of continuous driving. Maximum driving time is usually 9 hours, which can be extended on certain days to 10. The 45 minute break can be split into a 15 & 30 minute break (in that order!) but the second break must be taken after no more than 4.5 hours driving has taken place.  (Eg. 2 Hours Driving (15 Break) 2.5 Hours Driving (30 Break) 4.5 Hours Driving). When driving under EU rules, driving hours must be recorded by Tachographs.

Domestic Rules are much less strict - after 5.5 Hours driving only a 30 minute break is required.  As Tony has stated, the alternative way (and much less common with NXWM) is a cumulative break, whereby during an 8.5 hour period breaks totalling 45 minutes must be taken. In theory, the breaks during the Cumulative method could be taken as 9 five-minute breaks.  Maximum daily driving time is 10 hours. A tachograph is not required to record Domestic Rule driving.

Virtually all work at NXWM falls under Domestic Regs, but there are exceptions such as the WA 'College Bus', which falls under Private Hire work and therefore comes under EU Regulations.
