@Winston Just been trying to find out what rate of pay Abellio offer, but all the website is is "excellent rate of pay".

Interestingly the website also says "You should have a minimum of 12 months visa documentation or longer before the date of expiry"

When it was Travel London it was only 10p per hour more than NXWM's top rate

Presumably drivers in London are paid considerably more for having to live in the South-East...

Maybe you are right on the lower pay then?

Found this from 2010:

'all I know is Abellio pay £11.60 starter wage for PCV holders but very little more for overtime which is dissapointing. Struggling to find ANY info online about other current wages but have been led to believe the average is at least £12 and often at least £15 for overtime'

And this last year, if you read down it seems Abellio may favour employing Eastern Europeans who will work for lower rates of pay

Wasn't it abellio who advertised vacancies abroad first and this led to the press getting involved etc.

Looks pretty conclusive then, that's how Abellio manage to go in cheaper on tenders, as they have lower staffing costs

If we trust the Daily Mail :P

No doubt staffing costs are a, if not the, major expense on TfL contracts.

Without wishing to sound like an idiot, how do tenders work? Presumably it is on a gross cost basis ie cheapest wins but surely some services could pay for themselves on the cash and Oyster fares. Or does all this go back to TfL?

Ex BC driver

I picked up a recruitment leaflet while I was there. It says that due to an increase in work, they are recruiting trainee and licence holders, and that you could earn between £600 - £800 per week

All the revenue taken goes straight to Tfl regardless of type. I think the operators are purely bidding to operate the routes themselves

Right, thanks for the info. It does seem quite bureaucratic-surely it'd be easier and cheaper for passengers if there was genuine, on-street competition, and innovation. Don't know how that would be achieved though :P
