Class 43 is as far as I know the only class number that has been used twice

First time around for North British built Warships
second time for HST power cars which they received by default as they should have been class 41, but were renumbered into the 43xxx series as coaching stock, but then became locomotives again but retained the 43xxx numbers, so 43 class numbers.

Only the prototype two were actually renumbered, built as 41001/2 they were renumbered 43000/1, locomotives generally do not use 000 but coaches do!

The NB variety did have a brief stint of regular work, including on the Euston-Salops from Wolverhampton.

Those 3 ex Southern electrics were withdrawn in 1968, classes weren't introduced until 1969

They were still classed as class 70s though, no idea why.

LOL - I'm well aware what an HST power car is today, yes. 

As Tony has mentioned, though, in 1968 the Class 43 classification was bestowed upon D833 - D865. 

The HST power cars were not reclassified out of the Coaching Stock series into Class 43 Locos until the mid-1980s.

HSTs will be around for a significant time yet, ScotRail will be receiving that region's first domestic allocation in the next couple of years, transferred from the West.

London Midland's 150s will be transferring to join their sisters operating for Northern in the next three years, replaced in the short term by more Class 153s coming out of GWR.
