Blackburn Private Hire (Lancashire) have reached the BBC news desk with their 'second hand' electric buses.

The electric buses are being used between Highercroft and Blackburn city centre - but only while their batteries have sufficient charge because Mr Critchley said there were no charging points on the route

'The battery only lasts at the moment until mid-afternoon and then we have to bring it off-service and put a diesel back on'.
'But we're hoping to get chargers put into town, which should hopefully last all day'.

Perhaps they should have done things the other way round - put the chargers in first maybe?

It would be interesting to know how old these 'second-hand' electric buses are, how many miles they've already done, and of course how much was paid for them.

And of course most interesting to know would be why their previous operator sold them on!

A brand new electric bus should last most of the day on a full charge. Battery life will degrade over time though.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

the one in the photo is ex-CT4N BYD K9UR LJ16 NNB, id presume they are pretty low milage since they were used on the very short east mids airport gateway shuttles, CT4N also have LJ16 NNC but they appear to have kept that one for local services.

they were replaced by brand new yutong E12s earlier in the year and didnt see further use so i presume thats why they were sold.

If the bus is 8 years old isn't that about the expected life of the batteries?

Battery life will depend upon vehicle use, how often batteries are charged, battery charge level when it is recharged, and if they'vce already been serviced/replaced since new. Some batteries are guaranteed for 5/10/life of vehicle, though unsure if the latter extends to sencond hand owners.

This is the sort of second hand market that intrigues me - I'll be watching this intently.
Autofare 3 - the ticket that laughs in the face of contactless!

8 year old electrics are still running around London with no sign of needing new batteries yet
