...
In the case of the 28, the evening and Sunday journeys are 'exceptions' because they continue beyond the 'normal' route to Small Heath, so they correctly show as 28E journeys.
...

Until recently the Small Heath journeys were numbered 28B, they only showed 28E on the opposite journey because they terminate short of the "normal" terminus of Scott Arms
Now in exile in Oxfordshire....

They've been numbered "28", for a number of years now (7/8), so that was some time ago now.
They currently show "28 Small Heath" and "28E Dyas Road", that's been the case for some time now, as can be seen from this pic of 1865 -

No they don't display 28E.
They display "28 Small Heath".

OK, so I stand corrected. But you are missing the point of my post, which was to explain the nature of the -E suffix, and what it represents. 28E 'would be' correct, if that was what they displayed on a Sunday, which I'm sure they used to, even if they don't now.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

They haven't displayed 28B for years. The stops flags also use to display 28B.

I don't recall them ever displaying "28E" on the Small Heath trips, as has been said above it did used to be "28B", some years back now.

There are a few timetabled trips, since the 22nd April 2018 - the 17:27, 17:45 and 18:14 - 11C, as well as the 23:25 11A, from Acocks Green all terminate at Stockland Green.
Another 11E destination you wouldn't see very often it was introduced following timetable change is "11E Harborne", the 07:47 11A from Acocks Green terminates at Harborne.
Local Routes
94/95, 11A/11C, 28.

Smethwickian

Seen at 1710 today in Waterloo Road, Smethwick, heading from city: 82E "Bearwood Road Barleycorn". Unusual, and also another example of a long-established pub landmark no longer there or no longer with the original name, it now being 'Hadley Hall' banqueting/wedding venue.

Kind of reminds me of the 24E journeys terminating at Court Oak Road, 'The Punchbowl'. Another pub now long gone and, in its place, is now a newly-erected residence for the elderly. With the recent blind changes on BC (and AG/YW) routes, I'd be surprised if it still displayed 'Punchbowl' - but I doubt it. This short working was generally the terminating point for buses during *heavy* snow season.

2138 - X21, University. Wait half an hour for a bus and this is the first one to arrive. Absolute joke. The wait continues once again...

EDIT: 2139 has turned up a minute later. Still a shambles of a service though.
2138 got as far as Bath Row before being took out of service...
