The 242/A were brilliant routes, a half hourly between Halesowen and Dudley (evenings and Sundays), you couldn't go wrong, unfortunately passenger numbers were low and I think that's why they got withdrawn. 243A was a variant of the 243 ran by Diamond, when it got extended to Merry Hill, the 243A ran Dudley to Timbertree (the old 243 route)
Class 153, 155 and 156. The Super Sprinters

The 247 & 248 were circular services between Stourbridge and Dudley.

The 247 went from Stourbridge, Pedmore Fields, Lye, Merry Hill, Brierley Hill, Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, Netherton, Old Hill, Halesowen, Hasbury, Colley Gate, Pedmore Fields & Stourbridge.

The 248 went in the reverse route.

the A variants would have a slight route variation in Old Hill.

Certain of the PE B6s had extra large fuel tanks fitted for these routes as in the early days (501 - 508 i think), it was quite common for buses to run out of fuel.

In the early days it was just B6s as that was the main bus at PE at the time. although am sure that Mercs, B10B & B10Ls also worked it.

Was it withdrawn upon introduction of the 243 Circular or was it withdrawn before that ?, last question; what route now comes closet to replacement

Was that when they fitted the long range fuel tanks to the B6's, the early ones I seem to remember, 501- 512 or 513 I think, so they could stay out all day as they were running out of fuel

Yes they were, because of the mileage involved would take more than a standard tank full of diesel.

What a brilliant route, just wish I'd been riding buses for longer! I'd have happily spent many evenings sat on a B6 round that route

Stu

I believe the 247 and 248 came to an end as a result of the Dudley Network Review; while a nice route for enthusiasts, clearly the regular passengers felt otherwise!  :P
