Given the range of opinions, I'd like to offer mine, as an enthusiast, forum member, and as someone who helped plan the last one at WN.

Space: the biggest factor that NX have to consider from a safety aspect - not ideal, though logistically, the only realistic area segregated from traffic. Granted, still bus movement past the parking area on the right as you come in, but self contained enough to manage.

Planning: the event is planned purely by employees with the blessing of NX management. These individuals spent ridiculous amounts of time canvassing and convincing NX management of the benefits of such events. They have to compile logistics plans, risk assessments, method statements and all of the associated paperwork withing NX, as well as dealing with the public liability elements

Execution: these volunteers are at WN at stupid 'o'clock on the day to ensure that buses are moved from the area ready for display buses, soundstage, stalls, all whilst maintaining full operational control for buses to leave for service. They are also there throughout the event to manage safety, security and are the last ones to leave after everyone has left, to return the area back to its original state and put operational buses back for service the following day.

The single biggest issue that the volunteer planners face, and the major objection from NX management, are the idiots that attend and then start messing around with display buses, operational buses and generally making an arse of themselves - @Tony and I ejected more than our fair share of idiots last time, and no doubt we'll be doing it again to prevent safety breaches, which ruin it for everyone else!!!!!!

So PLEASE, whilst everyone is entitled to an opinion, consider the feelings of the volunteer planning committee who have been planning this from the day after the last one ended, just so we can enjoy the event.

Oh, and if you are going, and are stupid enough to be one of the idiots that ruin it for everyone else - you are not big, you are not clever and I will personally ensure that you are removed before you attempt to gain access, though if you slip through the net, you will be given short shrift and ejected without explanation.

Please show restraint and respect, and enjoy this experience whilst we are able to do so!

Quote from: Marge559 on April 22, 2025, 01:18:08 AMJack is correct though. This event is being arranged by WN employees, good people, who are giving up personal time to make these arrangements work. As well as certain staff who will be volunteering their rest time on the day. I'm sure they love seeing people complaining on here that it's not good enough or big enough. It was said at the start of the year by forum staff that anymore open days were unlikely due to the current financial situation at NXWM, maybe don't be so ungrateful for what you have got? Neither the company, or the staff pulling out stops for this event to happen, owe bus enthusiasts anything at all. Just remember that next time you post your negativity about it.
Pn staff are organising it

TGZac

I remember at the 2023 event that some of the staff make an announcement reminding us of behaviour after some people started opening the doors of random buses. I will admit guilty to entering some of some buses and taking interior shots. (I wasn't one of them opening the doors, just saw the buses were open and didn't know what was going on)

Also, regarding space, in my opinion, it was just okay, did not feel as if were packed like sardines but pictures were difficult to take.

Would be nice to see an intresting variety of vehicles used on the runs into the city centre.
after all it is a bus bash.

Metrobus, Tridents, 4001, & other vehicles that have long association with the area.

I was making the announcements, and conveying my displeasure to the idiotic minority, which resulted in them being ejected from the premises.

I agree completely, it's always a minority who end up ruining things for the majority.

I think some of these idiots forget WN or any garage is still an active bus garage, just because a platty is parked up behind the display buses doesn't mean it is there for show, they may need it to go out into service at short notice. Not only is it an active bus Garage, there are offices dotted around and people would not appreciate idiots doing silly things that has to ruin their work

I'm guessing additional security would be the main problem, but isnt there anywhere off site something could be held?

Yes, for a large fee

Any event held externally requires greater planning, licencing and additional public liability insurance, that would far outweigh the need for the event.

To recover the costs of such, then the event organisers (which isn't strictly NX, the company) would need to charge an entry fee/ticket price. From personal experience, the numbers that attend these bus bash events wouldn't have anywhere near enough people to make it viable to run offsite. Working on the approximation of 100 visitors, you'd be looking at £100 per ticket.

These events are always well planned and executed by passionate people wanting to do good for the company and for the bus fraternity.

There's two alternatives to this event:

1. Support the organisers, make it a positive experience and weed out the idiots.
2. Not have an evet at all.

I know which one I'd choose.

One thing I'd like to point out to anyone attending Wolverhampton Garage Open Day, or any event where there is an implied public right of access, is the subject of trespass.

Trespass in the UK refers to the act of entering or using someone else's property without permission. This can include physically walking on someone's land, erecting structures, or parking vehicles without the owner's consent. Trespassing can have civil implications, where property owners may seek legal remedies, or criminal implications, which can lead to fines or imprisonment. It is important to note that while trespass itself is not a criminal offense, it can be involved in other legal issues.

Where there is an implied right of public access, visitors to the Wolverhampton Garage Open Day, or any event where there is an implied public right of access, may enter the premises unless this is restricted by agents acting on behalf of the land owner or the tenant - i.e. NX staff, organisers or appointed marshals, either on the gates or walking around the event. This public right of access can be immediately revoked with no reason given and the trespasser being asked to leave. If the trespasser refuses, or impedes the agent during the course of their work, this can become Aggravated Trespass:

Aggravated trespass is a criminal offence where an intruder enters the premises and causes damage to the property, or enters onto land or a building without the owner's permission with the intention of disrupting, obstructing or intimidating others from carrying out lawful activities. This can be by damaging or destroying the property, using graffiti or otherwise damaging premises with the purpose of intimidating the owner or members of staff. A famous example of this is "sabbing" or hunt sabotage.

This would include, but is not restricted to, entering restricted areas, INCLUDING BUSES, PROPERTY OR RESTRICTED AREAS OF THE SITE. The agent need only ask you once to leave, then they can call Police to have you forcibly removed/arrested as required.

Maximum penalty is 3 months imprisonment, or a fine of £2500, or both. First time offenders would likely get a fine of between £200 – £300. The PCSC Act 2022 introduced this as a new offence.

I find this very useful to know

What's brought this up?

If you read the thread in greater detail, what do you think is the overriding theme running through these events?

I'll give you MY opinion - idiots that ruin these events for the vast majority of sensible bus enthusiasts. The idiots that I have ejected personally from these events. The idiots that attend thinking they've got a God-given right to be there, or have everyone else surrender their enjoyment for the idiots that scream at others to move whilst they take "the perfect photo", that trespass on clearly closed buses, owned by NX and those that are brought along very kindly by private exhibitors that have pumped thousands into their preservation, who then moan and belly-ache about being removed from sight thinking that they have been wronged.

But worst of all, that disrespect the organisers who have given up hundreds of collective hours to plan and run these events.

My post is to advise and inform. That's "what's brought this up".

No I respect that I think it's good the open days are respect anyone who puts the time and effort into organising these events. I'm sorry I didn't read the full thread. I was asked to leave last year as the group I was on a bus with end. Anyway enough of this I don't want to argue it's in the past now hopefully this year is successful and big well done to all who are organising this event.
