I'm pretty sure it's not as easy as it seems.

Wrights currently don't offer that, and it would probably cost several million to do all 20 and I suspect BCC haven't got several million

Could BCC sell them ?

The Real 4777

What about installing conventional diesel engines in them? Seems like money's no object when offering sacrifice at the altar of Climate Emergency, but ultimately the people paying for BCC profligacy need to be able to move freely around their region.

No way you would be able to do that at a reasonable cost

According to the Franchise Document behemoth, NX will take ownership of the Hydrogen buses in 2028 so I guess they can do what they want with them then - who knows what the landscape will look like by then though.

I've not seen any updates on WMCA's plan to generate hydrogen from the canal in Walsall. Maybe the hydrogen revolution is under threat anyway, certainly the plan for the 1 billion euro hydrogen plant in Rotterdam may have hit the buffers as the Dutch government has changed tack on financial incentives which has discouraged Shell from progressing.

It's an interesting question; BCC bought these with ZEBRA funding that they bid for and received, not using their own capital, so I'm not sure where they would stand if they decided to sell them. I think it would be frowned upon if they were able to cash in and then use the money elsewhere, depends on the terms and conditions of the ZEBRA funding award, perhaps BCC would have to pay the money back to the government?
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

Could they maybe donate them, give them away to someone who may have better luck getting them into service. If BCC didn't pay for them then they're not losing anything. They're not fit for their purpose here and they won't be in service anytime soon.
