Twin door buses.

With swift cards now been the more common to pay for fares will  we see twin door buses on routes such as 42/43 or 31/32.

The idea of twin door buses was to speed up services because of slow cash fares being paid so the logic to your question is backwards

Dont the Boris buses in London have multi doors? They take no cash so Is not the question a good one?

How busy do the 42/43 or 31/32 get in comparison to loadings on the Boris buses? I think part of why they have multi-doors is because how efficient loadings have to be, with getting people on and off as quickly as possible.

Either that or that 3rd door is a gimmick to replicate the Routemaster.

We are a very long way from cashless buses in the West Midlands or from a system where one touch-in would allow for travel any distance.
The fare system in London is essentially flat fare with capping or travelcards (on buses valid in all zones regardless of tube or rail zones held).
But here in the West Midlands we have individual operator tickets, multi-operator and multi--modal tickets, short hop, route-specific offers, local daysavers, exemptions-north-of-Coven-on-the-54, different child fares if you board outside the WM county boundary, Daytripper valid to some places in Warwickshire (Keresley) but not others (Coleshill)..... and so on and so on.
How would cashless one-touch boarding away from the driver validate all of those, select the right ticket or know how to deduct the correct sum?

London is also full of  tourists so a lot busier then buses in the west Midlands

Wasn't there a safety reason they didn't have twin door buses for very long?

Surely deliveries from 1971 onwards wasn't specified for twin doors?

The last ones I can think of were the Walsall short Fleetlines, plus what was left of the municipal orders that entered service with the PTE!

Weren't there some old MAN SL200 bendybuses in the 80s or was that a different area of the Midlands that I'm thinking? I know they were tri-door, similar set up to the ex-London bendies

Did it just do a similar job to the Travel Decourcey Citaro on the NEC shuttles today which have twin doors (carying people on short trips between the Car Parks and NEC entrances or did they do something else?

The bendy buses on the 67 until March 2015 and in Coventry up until March 2018, so not that long ago also had twin doors as well @Westy.

When I used them on the 67 I never saw anybody trying to get on through the back doors without paying.

Basically, yes.  After a fatality in Birmingham, a time delay was put in for the centre exit for safety reasons, and this made two door WMPTE buses actually slower than single door vehicles.  Technology has moved on but the driver still has less control over the centre exit.

Another factor putting off operators (such as Lothian) is increased fare evasion on two door buses.

The WMPTE 47** Nationals were dual door for services to the NEC and some 10** Nationals were rebuilt as dual door for the ICC. These were then later used in service, mainly on the 500 in Wolverhampton, although the dual doors were never used.

Yep there were. In Cannock with Chaserider. They might have made it into Birmingham on the 156 but their main usage was the 870 i think

I remember going on one of them on the peak service X55 all the way to Cannock!
