You're supposed to at least.
& sometimes I've seen the staff at the station/coordinator check tickets, often they don't.
Local Routes

i heard drivers arent meant to, but most have passengers show them anyway

and there are revenue staff who are meant to check, but these revenue staff are only based in major stations ofc

This might sound so stupid but could you use a bus pass for a rail replacement service?

Yes, you must have a valid rail ticket.

No, passes for bus travel are only valid on bus services, a rail replacement is still a train journey, just operated by a bus.

The exception, as pointed out earlier, would be nNetwork passes, which are valid on bus, metro and train services.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

i showed a standard bus ticket to a revenue inspector and he said its fine to ride on, the actual bus looked like a local bus

that was the only time i was asked to show a ticket...
