It does say 'Blackheath' in the destination, and the Omnilinks show the 'A' in the same sized font as the numbers. Doesn't seem logical to renumber to me, especially to a number that has less in common with '120' than '120A'.

80 serves Devonshire Road, Holly Lane & St Paul's Road as opposed to Smethwick High Street (80A). 80A serves Windmill Lane as opposed to Victoria Park (80)

I think shortening the 127 would work with a local route like suggested. I would also take the cut the 129 to run Bearwood to Merry Hill only and let the 127 / 128 pick up the city traffic.

Other than that I can't think of any other ways to simplify the Hagley road services without upsetting a lot of passengers. Withdrawing the 140 and increasing the frequency of the 241 Came to mind with passengers changing for Birmingham at Quinton.

The thing is, how long has the 120 been travelling between Birmingham and Dudley, certainly since I was young and got an interest in buses. In my early years, there was a 121 which travelled between Birmingham and Langley Green via Tat Bank Road. All routes that needed variants had a different route number, the E didn't exist in North division for a while so you had

245 Stourbridge - Wednesbury
246 Stourbridge -- Dudley
247 Dudley - Wednesbury
248 short journeys to Hart's Hill Garage.

My point is, people may not use public transport all that often, they see the number 120, the A will probably mean nothing to them and they are that convinced the 120 goes to Dudley as it always has, they will jump on without checking the destination correctly. remember for a lot of people in Birmingham, the A stands for anticlockwise as in 11A.

If you do that and can't read the destination then you have nobody to blame but yourself for getting on the wrong service. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What would you do regarding the City to Warley frequency? I don't think Portland Road could cope without a bus every 10 minutes in the peak

I have to say that when I see an 'A' variant of a route I would normally expect it to be a minor variation of the main route, not a route that branches off in a very different direction and ends up at a destination a few miles away.

It might be understandable if there were no available free route numbers nearby that could have been used, but there were other numbers available for what is a very different route for a large section. 120A is hardly in keeping with what seems to be the constant push towards 'simplification'.

Get rid of the odd service numbers.

It worked in Walsall (not)

We've got 35A, 70A, 2E, & previously had 8A & 2A as well!

Not to mention 301 & 302 sticking out like a sore thumb in Bloxwich, along with 326.

If you're gonna renumber, do it properly, not a half arsed attempt!
