The 96 was possibly the least attractive of all Birmingham routes, running past a large mental hospital then Winson Green prison before terminating in the back of beyond down some back street near Soho. However it was magic in 1961 and 1962 because the Atlanteans and Fleetlines were first used on it. Younger enthusiasts can hardly understand how amazing it was to ride on a rear-engined front entrance double decker. Happy days indeed!

Stevo - I think Mr BusFan was possibly referring to the Chelmsley Wood 96 of recent years, but to us old timers the 'real' 96 was the Winson Green prison run. And yes, agreed, it was a grim route in terms of the places it served!

Sir Mike K is right ! I was referring to the old 96/ 97 pairing and my earliest bus memories was me happily thinking how will I get to the City Centre today !

The 96 yourselves are mentioning seems awfully sad ! Imagine driving that route, you'd be hoping every stop is the relief point.

For me
The old 26 Bromford Bridge to City Centre before it was rerouted up Mainstream Way by Greggs. That's when it went up Melvina Way and coming out by Duddeston station and turning right up Lawley Middleway instead of going straight across the island but sadly route now defunct.

963 Gannow to City Centre with DP Metrobuses in either livery as I used to live that side of town. Also no longer going.

93/94 When the went thru Aston University before they demolished & rebuilt Masshouse Circus to how it is now.

590A/C or 59/90 For the same reason for 93/94 & when they had to go all the way round Lancaster Circus to go back down by the Fire Station to go thru the Uni grounds

The 900 - but when it was ran by CV with Metros...during the A45 works in the late 90s/early 00s..

i used to like the very old 137, Gornal Wood to Birmingham!
Pensnett is my local garage. Favourite bus of all time is Fleetline 6360 (KON 360P).

Ah yes, I remember the 137.  When I lived I was a kid coming back from Bearwood I used to get real excited if the 136/137 were the first to come rather than the much more frequent 9. Before the B&Q was built with the roundabout, the double deckers used to bomb it down Mucklows Hill.

With the 141 now extending back towards Pensnett, it reminded me of the 136/137/137A days.

I like the 529 don't know why but it's fast loads of bus lanes and felt safe

You've only caught W'ton/Walsall routes a couple of times so you can'tvreaaly make that judgement.

All routes have a equal chance of trouble.  I travel on Wolverhampton routes daily and i feel safe

The 11 isn't very nice terminus, I felt safe in bilston and in the bus station itself

I second that
