This place in Great Bridge,  is it on the Spine Road as I  saw a Merc go there a few months back?

Carlyle Bus Parts are on Great Bridge Street, just off the Spine Road by the island, the 74 goes right past it.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

Is it my imagination or is the volume of buses in works for refurb lowering? It used to be around 20 at a time. If the same engineering policy was being followed you'd expect early NXWM livered vehicles to be starting to trickle through. I couldn't help noticing the NXWM engineering director has moved to Arriva NE - I wonder if there will be any change.

The standard of the fleet had improved massively over recent years - but hopefully it won't be a flash in the pan and back to the old ways.

No, the level is actually higher than it has been since Tyburn Road shut. Up until a couple of years ago it was normally about 7 in the paintshop, two at BC and one at Walsall garage. Each garage would normally have one bus in for repaint at ant time.

Now, with the BC refurb bays moved to Walsall there is normally 3 there, one at West Bromwich and three at Trailways with Carlyle doing accident repairs. The paintshop cannot take more than about 7 on space grounds

Not sure if still the norm? But we all did the WA garage tour, there were three buses in the refurbishment bays inside the main garage plus another 2 ALX400's being re-panelled bottom end/right-hand wall of the paintshop as well. With 9 buses in the actual paintshop with the spray booth empty.

Back then though, I think Trailways might have only be dealing with two buses at a time.

Renault truck place? If so I've seen TWM Metrobuses there in the past

Do NX still deal with Hartshornes in Walsall by the way?

When I first started work on the old Yts over 25 years ago I did a couple of weeks there filing invoices & noted some invoices with West Midlands Travel on, plus I spotted a Leyland National there when I passed by there not long after.

I believe they do for any Volvo work.

i bet the nationals might have been there for either steam cleaning or having attention to engine (some were repowered with volvo thd engines as found in b10m etc)

well that seems strange, if PE were short couldn't they have bought back 1649 which looks like it doesn't have a lot wrong with it!
Pensnett is my local garage. Favourite bus of all time is Fleetline 6360 (KON 360P).

It looks in good nick from the outside, but they're may things wrong with underneath/mechanically that aren't immediately apparent. 1649 has been withdrawn for a reason that isn't worth the cost of repairing, otherwise an older one in poorer condition would have been selected instead
