West Bromwich garage dead merc pile parked in front of admin block are

1560/1582/1589/1667/1698 all currently missing there rear lights very odd i,m thinking unless there's big demand for them.
It got me thinking what could I have from a merc as a souvenir as I,ve always liked them for the power houses they were.

The 1909-1953 are actually Euro 5 I believe - they have the Scania DC9 30 230 engine. The 1788-1907 series have the Scania DC9 16 230; you can tell the difference between the engine sounds and performance - the later ones are a lot smoother I find when changing gear at a low speed.

The Scania engines are pretty good - the YW ones are great powerhouses and certainly utilised at times. Miles better than a strained E200 (the old version).

There's always the occasional bus out of a batch which needs a new engine earlier than usual - remember one of those 2009 E400s needed a new one. One of Diamond's Optare SRs (MFV) has a engine from a Optare Solo now as the previous one just went dead. Anyway I'll shut up!

Please don't shut up! According to that first site the Euro 5 engine is bigger than the Euro 4. I'd noticed a difference in sound too. It's ironic that I've just learned this as they leave my regular route the 37.

None of

601; 632
1667; 1704; 1707; 1743

@Stevo

Thank you! Yeah the Euro 5s sound a bit more "bassy" due to the larger size. The Euro 4s have a 8867cm3 E4 engine, whilst the Euro 5s have a 9291cm3 EEV one. The Johnsons Scanias have the same engine, but the Ecolife gearbox.

This website is great for the details, and has some pictures of when the NX Scanias were on delivery from Poland.

The suspension I find is also slightly improved on the later EEVs in comparison to the Euro 4s.

I saw 1677 parked up (next to 1704?) in the 2nd row, but it never registered as a new withdrawal, the other one was next to 1627 (row nearest the fence)
