Are you sure they were 'untimetabled'?

There are numerous timetabled short workings between Birmingham and West Bromwich.

Also, NX don't have any single-deck OmniCities, theirs are OmniLinks.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

I believe every other 74 is a 74E during the day

BlackCountryBusSpotter

Pretty sure the 74 is every 5 minutes between Brum and West Brom with West Brom only being every 10 minutes paired with the Dudley section being every 10 minutes to make a 5 minute frequencey

Yes but usually the timetabled workings just say 74 West Bromwich without the E.

I'm sure there are exceptions such as buses which don't have it programmed or whatever, but yeah sometimes you might have a 74 that is timetabled to go to Dudley but cut back hence the 74E.
Local Routes: 002, 39/39A, X21, 46, 76.

The Only 74E Blinds might be Island Road in Handsworth, The Hawthorns Maybe (Football Special) or maybe M5 Island I'm sure I saw one of them a while ago. With a 74E from Birmingham maybe Great Bridge, Island Road or M5 Island

They used to always show '74E' and now occasionally you will see that displayed. Same as the 997, whoever's bright ideas it was to stop displaying the E has just made more 'why aren't you going as far as so and so?'

Even the announcements used to have the E for some routes added made a lot more easier to notice.

Well I think in the case of the 74 it is probably written on the Timetable say 17:30 74 is To West Bromwich plus the Next Bus Info Screens and the front of the bus saying 74 West Bromwich Via Handsworth will give it away. 997 yeah confusing my dad made that mistake as the X51 was delayed the 997 he caught said 997 Walsall this was a few years ago it terminated at the Dears Leap and he had no idea where he was. The other day I saw  39E to Bilston it is Timetabled to terminate in Bilston at that time. The last 37 went past me once Not In service but it had 37E Darlaston on the blinds despite the last 37 due to terminate there. The 34's show 34E to Darlaston despite a few being timetabled there or used to be. The 79 used to have a Journey that terminated in Wednesbury from Wolverhampton so it either said 79E Wednesbury or 79 Wednesbury Part Route or 79 Wednesbury on a single line. I think it may be up to the driver or they proggame In whatever is available so in the case of the 74 74 West Bromwich is probably available outright, 997E should be on the Display programing as the full 997 goes to Walsall, I guess the 74 is like the X51 is the X51E Walsall needed or could you just change between X51 Walsall Via Great Barr or X51 Cannock Via Walsall.

Driver probably selected wrong blinds, aslong as it shows where the bus is terminating it doesn't really matter whether it says 74 or 74E

1840 just now in Walsall bus station 19:04, displayed 37E to lodge farm, looked on bus times and he should be going to willenhall but he's not late.

Building Fire in Willenhall closed of Lower Lichfield Street 37 are terminating Stringes Lane or Lodge Farm NX Twitter suggested Stringes Lane which Is where 1884 has started from. @Westy saw a 37E Eairler so 1840 might not be going to Lodge Farm but it isn't going to Willenhall where it terminates either

Lodge Farm is probably the closest they could display at the time.

Isnt there an 'On Diversion' display available they can use on occasions like this, like 'Serving Main Roads Only' they had for severe weather?
