In a old Wmpte timetable, it meant exceptions to normal service.

Birmingham City Transport had a short journey system where each turn round point was given a letter starting at A for the one closest to the City Center and continuing until the outermost short working turn round. I remember on the 50 that the 50J was Kings Heath and the 50K Alcester Lanes End. This was changed by WMPTE in the 70's to showing E which meant an Exception to the normal complete route as Westy said.
