Have the garages always had these short codes ? probably asking a silly question  :-\

Yes, they have. Back in the day, there used to be a  round sticker in the front windscreen, showing the garage code.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

It was opened when the Pattersons bus work was taken on, it was an oustation of BC. I think is used to operate the 636, 649 & 650 + others

Yes, it also ran the 44, and I think, didn't it also run the South West Link (SWL) and 921 for a time using refurbished Lynxs?

This sticker showed buses that had radios fitted to them. This was in the days when not all buses had radios installed.

So for example if a driver of a non-radio bus needed to contact Control, he could identify another bus that had a radio and aske the driver of that bus to contact Control.

Yes I think it did, didn't it have an allocation of around 20?
