Quote from: Ingleboro261F on March 21, 2025, 07:10:27 PMAlways wondered, what causes that humming sound when the bus pulls away on the 19 plate E400mmcs. As an example 7503 when it moves off after stop start it makes a characteristic humm noise which continues throughout the journey.
If it's a high pitched hum it's the power steering pump as its electric over hydraulic 6857 onwards at BC are like this and trust me as a driver it's annoying to listen too all day haha

Ah, I always thought it was the Smart hybrid system!

Platinums don't have 'smart hybrid' and smart hybrid isn't anything that makes a noise, just a way of generating extra electricity to work some ancillary equipment to save energy being taken from the engine for hydraulic systems

Another vehicle unlikely to be in service again is 4500

MoT expires and 6 weekly inspection was due today.

Don't knock it off bustimes yet, because if no work was found on inspection it could see two more days

Not long seen 6141 up by Moseley golf club. Looks like it had a run in with a car. Bumper and windscreen damaged.

Is it true the number 5 used to be operated by YW? If so when did it transfer to AG?

Around 2009 I seem to recall. AG operated the 76 at the time, the two routes switched garage.
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to QE Hospital | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

Wasn't it always a better choice to have routes running closer to a garage to be operated by that garage? For example the 5 being AG, and going to Yardley Wood, while the 6 is much closer to AG garage?

Not sure Walsall would agree having operated the old 900!

Hasn't the 6 always been at Yardley Wood?
And there was the 4 as well which the 5 replaced? it seems this was at YW as well with the 31/41 at AG?

It goes way back further than that - in BCT and early WMPTE days AG ran the 31/32 (Gospel Lane) and 44 (Olton routes) ie Warwick Road and YW the 37 (to Shirley) and 92 (Cranmore) ie Stratford Road - the 4 and the 6 have replaced those corridor routes.

In BCT days garages were closely associated with the corridors they served (many had previously been tram depots). The first closure I really noticed was Roseberry St (served Dudley Road routes) - the 80/82 moved to Quinton, resulting in transfer of unfamiliar vehicles there (Park Royal bodied Leylands), and one of the first examples of a garage operating a route on a corridor nowhere near it. The other routes moved to Hockley (83/95).

As more and more garages closed routes became operated sometimes by garages remote from them and even more so sometimes when ex Midland Red routes were integrated or area schemes were introduced.

Some of the changes following deregulation seem to have been based on other factors although a reasonable locality to the routes served seems to have applied (presumably to reduce dead mileage). However factors like available spare capacity might have been a dominant factor. When Moseley Road closed ffor the second time (ex Midland Red routes originally run from Digbeth), routes, vehicles and staff were transferred to a series of ex BCT garages including Coventry Road, Yardley Wood, Lea Hall and Washwood Heath, often based either on route corridors or areas in which the services ran.

The Black Country had all its ex Midland Red garages closed over a time leaving little choice but to run routes from remote garages like Hockley and Wolverhampton. Pensnett now fulfils much of those roles.

"Operational reasons"

In the case of the 5 and the 76, driver changeover on the 5 happens at Sarehole Mill, drivers travel to/from the garage on the 11A/C which is a short journey.

And on the 76, changeovers happen at Haunch Lane, from where it's a short walk or hop on the 18 back to garage.

Don't forget that West Brom operate a route all the way to Bromsgrove  , but through clever interworking with the 48, drivers change over at West Bromwich bus station.
