I think it's safe to say the metro has been dominant over the bus between Wolves and B'ham. We've gone from having 12 buses an hour connecting the two cities down to only 3
Class 153, 155 and 156. The Super Sprinters
"Around the corner" routes: 21, 89
Local routes: 12/A, 48/A
Semi-local routes: 54, 80, 87

Perhaps the 529 is destined to become a limited stop route.
Local Routes: 002, 39/39A, X21, 46, 76.
Localish Routes: 18, 23, X22.

That isn't a good idea. The 529 is already a short route and doesn't run alongside a lot of other services.

The metro killed the 979 not the 79

Still had a major impact on the 79. Hence it no longer running through to Birmingham.

The 79 was split because it was unworkable. Even on Sundays I would often walk from Darlaston to Wolverhampton on the way home from my Mothers without being passed by one.

Wasn't it like a 2 hour journey between Brum and Wolves?

Yes, most of the stops are only served by the 529. It's always very busy, often seen the queue from the stand all the way to the travel shop in walsall.

Whatever it was allowed it frequently wasn't  enough - and late running  poorly  regulated  with  consecutive late arrivals  in  Wolves being despatched empty - nothing more annoying than deciding to wait rather than set off on foot because there was one on the bus park only to see it set off empty.

The 529 does run mostly alongside other routes.  There isn't really an area solely served by the 529.  I think if it were to be limited stop, it would have to be between Wolves and Willenhall, as you have the 53,82 & 545 running alongside.

Neither of those services serve Willenhall though. The 529 probably would have been a limited stop route if NX wanted to considering how many limited stop services they have introduced over the last few years (X8,X10,X20,X21 and X22 just to name a few.)

Not all of those are really limited stop though
23 - Bartley Green
76 - Northfield
X20 - Birmingham Via Longbridge, Northfield & QE Hospital / University

You've got the 25 to Willenhall too.  Anyway, if the 529 was limited stop, it would have to serve Willenhall anyway as that is a major destination.

If you look at the area maps, there are quite a few roads that are only served by the 529. It also appears to be the only direct route between both Wolverhampton and Willenhall, and Willenhall and Walsall.

I don't think the train will have much of an effect on it, especially if the train is only running every 30 minutes (bus is currently at every 10 minutes; I was sure it used to have a higher frequency).

What do you mean?
X8 and X10 are limited stop between Birmingham and Quinton.
X20,X21,X22 are limited stop between Birmingham and Q.E Hospital. I believe the X20 also goes limited stop between Selly Oak and Longbridge as well.
