There's more info in the link. Here are the reports worst routes for crime (Jan - Sep 2024 apparently)
Services in Coventry with Highest Reported Offences

  • Service 21 (Willenhall to Wood End): 17
  • Service 3 (Warwickshire Shopping Park to Arena Shopping Park): 11
  • Service X1 (Coventry to Birmingham): 9
  • Service 20 (Coventry to Nuneaton): 8
  • Service 8 (Allesley Park to Walsgrave): 7
  • Service 15 (Coventry to Whitmore Park): 7
  • Service 6 (Coventry to Tanyard Farm): 6
  • Service 11 (Coventry to Leamington Spa): 5

Seems unfair to highlight only NXC. I wonder if SC get similar amounts of crime in Coventry?

Strange to see the 14 isn't there, the amount of anti social youth that route has is insane

BusDriverBosh

SC don't seem to get any grief/crime on their routes (not on the X17/X18 at least. Always loved driving them routes).
From what I've noticed, it only seems to be NXC/NXWM that has the crime.

It's interesting even though the SC 60 serves Willenhall also but much less freq compared to NXC.

Noted as well the NXC 13 to Willenhall isn't on the list?

The click-bait media love nothing more than taking statistics out of context and then using words like "dangerous" to exaggerate and put fear into people.

For context, its a nine-month period, therefore in comparison to the hundreds of thousands of bus journeys that passed without incident, those figures are almost miniscule.

And then people wonder why passengers are being put off from travelling by bus! Notice how the media rarely reports on positive aspects of travelling by bus?
My locals:
2 - Birmingham to Maypole | 3 - Birmingham to Yardley Wood
11A/C - Birmingham Outer Circle | 27 - Yardley Wood to Frankley
76 - Solihull to Northfield | 169 - Solihull to Kings Heath

We're always seeing negative things on the news but they don't highlight the fact that it's a minority causing these problems. Majority of people just want to go about their day.

The figures quoted earlier only relate to 'reported crimes'.

"Anti-social youths" might be misbehaving and causing a nuisance, but have any crimes actually been committed that you've seen?

It's of course entirely possible that 'actual crimes' could be much higher, due to many people simply turning a blind eye and not reporting them.

Anyway, the point still stands that the vast majority of bus journeys pass by without incident, but the media are doing a very good job of making out that travelling by bus is 'dangerous'.

The more they can get into people's heads that it is dangerous, the easier it'll be for them to rejoice when the lord and saviour Mayor Parker comes along and makes it all better.

Exactly, the vast majority of passengers pay their fares and behave themselves while they travel by bus here.

And equally a vast majority of passengers will not experience any antisocial or criminal behaviour during their journeys.

It is indeed a very small minority of people that cause problems.

But as I said in my earlier reply, the local media are just offering 'click-bait' - bus travel isn't as 'dangerous' as they're making out.

There's a couple of weeks before the consultation closes, and this article is just a nice bit of 'useful propaganda' aimed at people concerned about safety when travelling by public transport, who somehow mistakenly believe that bus franchising will eliminate all crime and anti-social behaviour on buses!

I read the consultation, the security of buses is expected to improve by nothing
Bus stops improvement is slightly improved, but the majority is just not improved or red / amber ranked stuff. Hope this franchise really doesn't happen. Matter of fact if even shows national express is cheaper than the franchise is going to be. Nothing more but a scam and a excuse to increase tax

I wonder if it was the quoted Inspector (name shown in the article) from Safer Travel police who issued the information? And then why? Could it possibly be job justification? Seems to me unfair to pick on NXC.

I think it's publicly accessible information as it's held by the police/a public body. It says it was obtained by a FOI.

I would be inclined to largely agree with what @Stu has already said on this topic. I make multiple journeys every day, most days and the vast majority of journeys pass without incident. (Today I've been on the 14 & 94/95 as well as the Kiddey 3 & 15).

Precisely. Also it has been reported that the whole Reach organisation - i.e. all the various "... Live" websites - has page view targets for the journalist.

The more sensational the headline, "Most Dangerous", "Snow Bomb" etc. the greater chance the journalist has of hitting their target.  A dreadful way to report local news thoroughly and sensibly.
