Original West Midlands Travel Timetables

Ive been looking through some original October 1986 WMT timetables. The format was so different from what went before under WMPTE.  

Does anyone know what the inspiration was for the style?

I think I have missed understood the question but back in 1986 buses were deregulated.  So it could be to do with the new market to allow for a competition on the route.
