40th anniversary of tendered bus routes in London

40 years ago today on Saturday 13th July 1985, the first yellow Fleetlines started running on the 81 between Hounslow and Slough operated by Len Wright Travel using the fleetname: London Buslines.

Because the 81 passes close to Heathrow, it had earlier journeys on it compared to the Saturday timetables operated on the other 3 routes that started with non-LT operators that day: 193 Eastern National; 313 London Country & W9 Eastern National.

First journeys at 5am from Hounslow-now slightly earlier and roughly the same time from both ends.

Some tender news from London which was announced earlier today.

It's fair to say that the senior management of Arriva London was breathing a little huge sigh of relief at the news today and they would have heard it in Dartford too. The former Kentish Bus garage has retained the 229,428 and 492 plus they've regained, after a very long time, the 96 from Stagecoach London at Plumstead. New electric buses are on order for all four routes and this will increase substantially the electric bus allocation in that part of South East London. All four routes begin next January with their new contracts and this ensures the future of the garage.

The other route for which a result was declared today is for the 315 in Lambeth. Abellio has held onto the route and it will use the current buses on it for three years from next May.

It is rumoured that new buses are going into service from Monday on the 230 at Northumberland Park where some of the existing electric buses are to be prepared for use on the BL1 in September which is going to be run out of Waterloo. I will report on this the week after next.
