4324 is getting a retrim
That's odd how they've done that - they did the same thing with 4370 at YW. But they've retrimmed the Geminis that have been refurbished recently and the PB Scanias that had the leather I assume will have as well. I don't know about 1918 - yet to go on it since its repairs.
the last few tridents "refurbed" from wn have come back without the retrim, and its a shame as they look dire compared to others that have been done. why leave some out?

But why though? NXWM were previously being so thorough in the repaints and refurbs?

Maybe they ran out of fabric to do the seats with.
Can't be - Geminis have been in after them and come back out with the new fabric. Desire to get them back out asap?
Maybe, especially with quite a few buses of the road around the garages, but guarantee they won't be done when more spare buses become available!
That'll be the problem - they'll probably get lost in the system, or the more tatty older NX repaints will get priority.

There's probably a simple reason - eg staff sickness in the trim section, or WN are running low on repaint/re trim funds. However it's currently another Hercules Poirot mystery - surprising an official view hasn't been quoted. Do we know if 4596 has been re-trimmed?

Sorry Nathan - I didn't read today's posts properly.
I can only describe it as quite extraordinary!! I wonder if the budget things close to the truth - after all WN have had to get a very large number of Tridents repainted to meet the end of 2014 completion. Absolutely bonkers in my view, NXWM!!

Is 4613 definitely still at Carlyle? I would've thought it would've been at Walsall for repainting by now. 4341's engine came in useful in the end then?
I'm sure

Well they probably won't be if they still have the original upholstery. And if they're threadbare etc etc will hardly look and feel like a new vehicle to the public which I understand to be part of the reason for doing the work - to raise quality perception.
I think the 50 branded Enviro 400s and the other 57 plate Enviro 400s should be repainted and retrimmed.

I agree, these were the very first buses to appear in the new livery and most are looking very faded and shabby now.
Just out of interest, when will buses be painted in the new livery? I would have thought the sooner the better considering it took about 8 years to change from TWM to NXWM.

I forgot some but 4391 shows just a bit of signs.
To be honest I have not seen any of the new style red buses having faded paintwork, 4391 included. Looking at this picture on flickr from this month someone has taken, the red seems in pretty good condition to me.

What is the point in repainting the Tridents but not doing the interior - would rather have the new seating than the new paint!
Presumably money saving, looks awful though, my seat was threadbare around the edges.
Weird though how the other bus types that have been refurbished - the Geminis and Scanias - have had the new seat covers fitted.

Was it sent in before the end of last year? It appears WN, YW and WA Tridents sent for repaint at the end of last year were not refurbed.
I presume that they have resumed with refurbs on Tridents with 4324 being one of them?
I guess they just paint the Tridents at Walsall then time later they put new seating in.

It obviously has initially, I don't know whether it will regain it. 4471 did
So what happens now Tony in the context of the new livery? Has it been confirmed that the new livery will only appear on new vehicle deliveries? If so do we assume that the paint shop will continue to repaint and turn out existing vehicles in the now 'old' standard livery?
I'd very much like to know the answer to this too.

All I know is the vehicles currently entering the paint shop are being painted in the current livery
Thanks Tony. Hopefully once the new livery has started appearing in public on new deliveries repaints of all vehicles will be based on the new livery. If NX felt the need to change the livery can't see why they would continue to turn out vehicles in the former livery. What would be the point?
Metrobuses were painted in an old livery for around 10years after the introduction of TWM livery in 1996. Other step entrance types gained TWM livery, so it wasn't just the fact they weren't low floor.
Same question. What's the point? If NX have decided on the need for a new livery why would they keep using red/white for repaints once the new livery has made its appearance on the road?

To distinguish which corridors have been upgraded to 'gold standard' with new buses?
I personally think it looks untidy when a new livery is introduced to the existing fleet with a handful of random buses appearing on random routes in the new colours. I was much better how they introduced the TWM low floor livery on new deliveries and retaining the existing red band livery for step entrance buses.

Bearing in mind there'll be around 500 within quite a short time not only it will show where investment has occurred but also the amount of investment by how regular a sight they are - around a third of the fleet.

Totally agree Don, most of the investment will likely be targeted towards the gold corridors, they will offer additional benefits to passengers & therefore should stand out from the mainstream fleet

They need to decide whether the two-tone red is a 'special' livery, in which case it should be kept to designated routes. If it's just a new livery, vehicles in the old livery are bound to get mixed up with those in new and it'll be just as messy as it's been since 2008 when the first NatEx livery appeared. In that case it's best to repaint everything as quickly as possible in the new livery.

I agree. I bet you'll still be seeing red and white in 2020!!
I don't see the need of adding a new livery, it's actually really annoying, especially now all (except 4177 & 4432) have been painted into NX livery. I can't be bothered to keep up with another set of repainting, if that's what it comes to

The current livery is annoying because it's so dull and impractical, it will be great to see less and less white - or should I say filth-streaked ex-white - on the roads of the district...

Fair one! I think it's generally accepted that some questionable decisions were made by a couple of previous managements - let's hope we can return to a state of evolution rather than chaos!

Those buses regularly fill in on Main Road routes, 4855 being especially fond of the 914, so they should not be made route specific.
I meant as 4950 is ticket branded in blue 4853 - 4856 should be ticket branded in green

A question Tony which you may already have answered somewhere. If so apologies. Has NX yet decided its policy for future repaints of existing vehicles in the fleet after the new standard livery has made its on road debut in the West Mids? Thinking about it if it's to be new deliveries only that would mean that potentially in the case of 64 plate vehicles, for example, they could be repainted 2/3 times into the 'old' livery over a vehicle life of say 10 to 15 years. In that case we could at the most extreme still be seeing vehicles in the old red and white until somewhere around 2030! Surely NX will not go down that route. Will they?
4404 back in traffic tonight on 13.

I thought it would be the new livery to go with the new buses coming into service. Rather than red and white
Do we know for certain that vehicles will not be repainted into the new livery?
It seems not. I think NX are following a policy of new livery buses for the upgraded routes - with other routes having the refurbished NX red and white buses. Makes sense as it clear when a route has been upgrade, although I would still refurbish certain existing buses in the new livery for certain routes - E.g I'd refurbish the Scanias for the 37 and 6 in the new livery or Platinum to improve the passenger experience, whilst saving on the cost of new buses.

I think the buses that are built after 2012 will get the new repaint in a couple of years time.

Hopefully they will or there could still be vehicles on the road in red and white in12/15 years time!
I wonder if any more 41xx and 42xx Tridents and B7TLs will be repainted, or will 4177 be the last?

I don't think there would be any point since they have reached old age. But I wont be surprised if 4177 will stay longer after these ALX400's have been withdrawn.

I saw 4672 whilst in Kings heath yesterday, it looked brand new, Imo they are good at refurbishing vehicles
Hope this is the right thread to ask but as delivery of the E400 MMC's has commenced what are the implications for the now 'old' red and white livery? Question has been asked in the past but no one appears to have an answer. Is it likely that NX will want to run with 2 liveries for what could could be up to 10 years? Now that the new livery is about to hit the road surely NX must have made a decision!
The whole business is going to be taken over by Stagecoach and re branded Midland Red, so NX won't have any say ;)

Having said that will be interesting to see if Stagecoach/Virgin do a better job on the East Coast railway line than NX did.
Slightly going off piste their lol

The fact the no one has answered your numerous posts asking the same thing, No!
It's been asked several times now - I am fairly sure NX are holding the new livery for just the new buses to make it clear, or at least main route corridors. Would make sense.

But surely that creates a two tier bus company, first tier will new buses and livery and the other with older buses and an old livery.
I just can't understand it, they have only just finished getting all buses in the current livery, and then they create a new one????
I wouldn't go as far to say its two tier - think of it more like trains - mainline livery for intercity trains and then more of a basic livery for commuter services. NX are focusing on bringing the new livery in on the new corridors, representing their investment. The "old livery" buses are still being repainted to look smart and the interiors still being refurbished. It's not as if the likes of the Geminis, Scanias, Tridents are being neglected at the moment - they are still being refreshed and tended to. Fine if they were not going to refresh them, then it would be a two tier system.
I could still see perhaps some of the newer post 2010 buses ending up in the new livery - things are lining up very conveniently for YW to send their Scanias off for refurb after April with the E400s (which need doing) going. Could be a chance for the 6 to see the new livery with refurbished Scanias representing investment in the route.

They have, to take them out of TWM livery. I mean the buses that are in the 1st NX livery (with connection bars that were done around 2009). Acocks Green's Gemini's 46** are getting done again, but not any bus under 4305. I'm wondering why this is

With so many buses on order for the next three or four years, I'm guessing it won't be worthwhile painting them as those which haven't been painted for six or seven years will likely be the first to be withdrawn and only those which have been refurbished or reengined more recently would be candidates for cascading.

I assume the AG 46-- Gemini's are being done as priority in preparation for Outer Circle route branding to be applied

For the last few months which buses have gone in for repaint have been decided by someone very sensible at HQ with a lot of logic, based on expected life, whether it was needed, or whether branding was due to be applied. The person doing that changes this week, hopefully the new one will do it using the same rules!

Hopefully the new person taking over thinks white is an undercoat, not a top coat.
Hopefully the person taking realises there's only one shade of white!
Answer to why Geminis get through Walsall faster than tridents.
To make a Gemini look nice again externally generally involves unclipping all the lower panels and putting new ones on, see attached photo. Even none damaged ones are replaced to the new style without the extra ridge
Whereas with a Trident, replacing the lower panels the same involves removing all the windows along with other extra work, attached photo taken the same day as 4661 above
Nice photo illustrating that Tony. Quite a good idea of Wrights to have that sort of system.
didnt optare use a similar idea? 2 flat headed screws and bottom panels came away. remember being at choice they had panels painted ready to fit.
Just another example of Volvo/wrights being a far superior vehicle to ADL
I agree wrightbus gemni is superior to alexander alx400, Wrightbus much more cost effective to repair,or refurb so friendly on company budgets, must save a considerable amount in labour costs alone.
Geminis certainly are superior - suspension is better and they're better built I find.
Shame the bulk of 4700 don't live up to the standards of there 4500 4600 counterparts , most need front suspension rebuilds imO, some just hopeless on smethwick high St speed bumps.
I do like the dash lay out on the 4700s far better design than earlier versions , I think walsalls b7rles share the same dash layout not sure

I did see both 4683 and 4432 out in service yesterday afternoon. Does that mean that 4523 has gone back to Acocks Green?
Yes, 4523 is now an AG vehicle, but is still in PB garage
Why are they still repainting in the old livery ,when a new one is being applied to new buses?

New livery is for new generation Euro 6 buses with new moquette, old one remains for existing fleet buses
So west midlands will be using 2 different liveries . what will coventry get ?.up here it looks like green with what ive seen in diagrams ..

Seems that way. No confirmation on NXC's and there's been no rumour/confirmation of NXC having any more new buses over & above the 5 E200's in current (old livery) at present. Two tone blue would seem the obvious choice and would also work in Dundee I.e. (Tayside colours). The green Dundee version is still only a proposal at present isn't it?
Are Dundee due any new buses this year?
we are getting 5 new midis within the next few weeks to replace the solos. at first we were told it would be E200s but there is,nt any spare at the moment and my source said we are getting streetlites .will have to wait and see . plus the buses due from birmingham .as for the colour change we are having a public vote on the subject .but i think its done and dusted .

Interesting that you may be getting some new buses, I was under the impression as part of the ADL deal, that any extra requirements would also come from there. That said, NX Op's have recently taken majority E200's but at least 4 x Solo SR's for BA shuttles at Heathrow.
Personally, a two tone blue version of the latest livery would work both for NXC & Dundee. I take it you still don't know what/how many is expected from Birmingham as yet?
1787 is transferring? Probably to be followed by other b7rle'

I couldn't agree more Winston, and as there's no plans for new buses for Dundee any time soon we'll have to make do with repainting our existing fleet...

Except those! (The last 3 "new" midis we got to replace Solos were second hand)
ACTUALLY THERE WAS 4 .731,2,3,AND 734,. WATCH OUT FOR 5 MORE SOON .

At least a start is been made on our ALX400s. 4237 is in most need of a repaint, it's pink rather than red at the front. 4254 was one of the better early repaints

West Midlands are getting all the new buses to apply the new livery to, we're not!
Just a thought but if NX are proposing, at this point in time, to continue repaints of existing vehicles in the 'old' standard red and white livery does it mean that in 3 to 5 years time when some of the new E400MMC's are ready for a repaint that the Walsall paint shop will be running 2 repaint lines? One for the new and one for the old liveries. Doesn't sound a very economic operation but it would certainly be 'interesting' for the paint shop operatives making sure the right red goes on the right vehicle!

It is no different to when Metrobuses were being painted in one livery and every other bus in Low floor livery.
When we owned Travel London 5 liveries could go through Walsall in the same week, Metrobus, Low floor, Coventry, London & Training

@DavieDD2 wow. just wow. It really suits it!!
@DavieDD2 that looks amazing to be honest, brings me back to the Metrobus days
Fantastic! Shows that a good livery can make an ugly bus more attractive. The bus equivalent of five pints! 😜
Now why couldn't they have painted a bus or 2 in an old livery like that to celebrate the 100 years of buses instead of the pathetic little celebration they put on in centenary square?

You would have thought their life expectancy didn't extend beyond a couple or three years max - however maybe some of the earlier NXWM repaints are considered too tatty for service?

4237 which John mentions was the first 42xx Volvo to recieve the new livery at BC so it was last repainted a good while back.
Also 4162 must be a candidate for repaint as it has several creases to its lower near side and is looking tired and faded. (Still drives nicely though). :)

Crimson
i cant find the post on facebook that tony has made about 4812
I'd seen that the ex YW E400's at WB are due to be repainted Crimson, but didn't see anything about 4812.
2900 had posted that the West Bromwich ones were going in the new livery on here as the management there had told some of the drivers
I had a feeling that maybe in the future newer 'older' buses would eventually be painted in the crimson livery, it just seems a bit premature at this stage.
So West Brom will have newish E400s less than a year old in the 'old' red/white livery on the 74/75, and older seven-year-old E400s in the 'new' livery on the 82/87?
Sorry, but this just seems to 'dilute' the impact of the new crimson livery; wasn't it meant to initially make the new Euro6 buses stand out?

So to get things straight, from what I can sum up.
The ex YW 47** E400's are being repainted into crimson livery
4812 is in for a repaint, as of yet we don't know if that is to be crimson or just a tone up (Yet to be confirmed by Tony)
The E200MMC are to be in crimson.
So

Say if the older buses (ALXs, etc) - with some life left in them, I'd predict them to recieve touch ups. Buses from circa 2006+ (57 plate Trident E400s, may go in for the full works, possibly) my prediction.
The comings and goings at walsall paint shop from now till the end of the year should be interesting.
Expect the unexpected. Ramp up the guessing game of what else could see the new livery.
There was a trident outside paint shop last night freshly done, I forgot to get fleet number though :(
Will see if it's still there when finish later
4254 back in garage this morning fresh from refurb
Two more buses in for repaint are
AG 4665 (repaint only) This was done in 2012 and the interior is still good, but Acocks Green had changed about 3 panels and not got correct shades of colours so it is getting a once over at Walsall to make it match all the others around it.
PB 4799, this is another due the full Crimson treatment including the red spot moquette
That's a surprise. It didn't last long the new buses only into Crimson.

Nobody other than people guessing have said it was for new buses only. I know at least one member of the forum has emailed NX to ask about it and the reply they got from NX was routes would go Crimson one at a time. This is what is happening. So yes, while each route is done you will get a mix of livery, but buses off one or two routes will go through, and then the paintshop will move to another. You will notice large numbers of 4738-62/99-815/7-29 turning up at Walsall in the next few weeks. This should avoid the mess of buses in all sorts of variations of livery being mixed up together.
AG's Geminis are staying red & white because so many have already been done and they don't want a mix on the Outer Circle
It makes sense but surely they should do all wb's then all of pb's or vice versa? Also what route are 4799-4815 intended for?

It would certainly fit in with the current route based mentality.
I read the forum every day and I'm on other areas of social media. Nowhere did I see any official announcement of the new livery being for new bus only or the new livery will be for gold corridors only. Why did so many people think this was the case?

Possibly because having announced it NXWM continued to paint vehicles for some time in the 'old' livery and even received 15 new vehicles in the old livery - and no doubt will continue to do so for older ones. I think everyone guessed that the Crimson livery would eventually be applied to existing vehicles, just a matter of when.
It's a great pity we appear not to be going to see Geminis in the new livery for a while ...... well Crimson!

Any idea when 4799 is due to leave PB? Might go and photograph it leaving.

It's more than likely already at Walsall now
Any idea why 4799 Has gone when it has already had a repaint, when there are plenty still in original livery?
I think it is because the 16, 101 and 82 & 87 have just received an 'upgrade' of euro 4 Enviros, but all the other enviros will probably get painted into crimson anyway as routes like 115/902/4/5/14 have just had 63 plates and soho road got upgraded 6 months ago with 64 plates. I also expect the 13 plates that are going on to pershore road will get the Crimson repainted as the pershore road will have got 'upgraded'.

I know that, but I mean why don't NX put through all of the buses that haven't already had a repaint first for the new Crimson livery rather than 4799 which has already had a repaint in its lifetime, and do the likes of 4799/4817/4822 (already refurbished) when the rest are done?

They probably will. But it can't be done overnight. Remember it took 6-7 years to repaint the fleet last time.

Two things to remember here.
NXWM don't just repaint buses like some operators. They get extensive repanneling and all buses going into crimson will get interiors to match.
The paint shop can cope with a maximum of 17 vehicles at a time, otherwise vehicles just end up parked outside doing nothing
Thanks Tony.
4799 currently at west broms refurb being stripped down as I type. Rear emergency window open and seats being trown out quick way of doing it I,guess, body still looks bright and shiny.

There used to be 3 in at a time at WN, when the paintshop is going at it full tilt dependant on the amount of damage they were knocking the tridents out in around 6 weeks.

Sometimes garage have more work on than they can cope with and others have a bit less, so if the training fleet is running well and Pensnett fitters are busy it makes sense for the Miller Street fitters to work on it. It is not unusual for buses to be worked on by any other garage

I'm a bit confused at all the mention of Crimson on repaints. Isn't that just the standard deep hard-wearing red of current repaints?
We're not getting all-over madder & red like 6101 etc on earlier buses, at least that's what was being said a couple of weeks ago.

All buses stated as being repainted into Crimson are being repainted in the new 2 tone red livery, as on the MMCs
Excellent, so the fleet IS going en masse, progressively, into a decent livery at last. Rejoice!
And as others have hinted, eventually we're likely to end up with some without extra route brandings. Double rejoice!
Don't get too excited. It looks as if only newer vehicles will get the new colours: E400s and presumably Omnilinks and B7RLEs.
If we could have the Omnideckers decked out in it too, I'd be delighted.
Had a quick look down Miller Street today. The trim shop has two sets of new pattern moquette seats ready. One for 4812, and the other I couldn't see a fleet number on.
Well they're doing it route by route - I could see YW Omnilinks being done for the 6 and 27 - pretty simple job there.

Well, yeah, s'pose so - perhaps they won't be priority... But i'm still waiting for a highly anticipated Coventry variant. Cyan, anyone? Something tells me the hybrids will be crimson, but green 'strokes' as opposed to gold.

The buses on the 154/54 are not new and since there was only one day between the change it would not of been possible to them repainted.

As Tony has stated in the past ADL bodied buses take a lot longer to refurb because the glazing has to come out before any repaneling can take place, where as the with WRIGHTBUS you don't quick and easy panel replacement using fasteners, even the long panel under the windows is only pop riveted hidden by the rubber strip clever eh. I do take my hat off to WRIGHTBUS clever engineering/design.
The MMCs have these new easy-release windows. Perhaps they'll be quicker to refurbish.

4751 now back at WB, photo tomorrow morning on main site, just off to drive the1500 coach to London
Looks a class act emphasised by the red and white livery in the background. Well done Nat Ex WM.
so the two-tone maroon/crimson is now been applied to older buses, will the green buses have a special two tone livery

Would I be correct in thinking only Enviro's are being repainted into the new livery?
What about the B7 Eclipse single deckers & Gemini double deckers, as surely they would last longer than the Tridents currently in service?
(I'm assuming the Presidents, along with other older vehicles, wouldn't be repainted, as they wouldn't be in service in the next 5 years? How long do they expect the Tridents to remain in service?)

I can see Tridents still in service in the next 5 years but I was under the assumption all buses will be repainted into the livery although taking into account buses which could potentially be withdrawn soon makes it somewhat difficult to predict what will get repainted quick, fair to say the Enviros are the main priority for now.
I can remember in the late 1980's the MCW metrobuses were being repainted into the then new "Silver/Grey" livery, fleetlines were still being repainted cream/blue, it wasn't until the early 1990's that fleetlines were painted in "Silver/Grey". So if the older Tridents/Volvo AX's are to become "Crimson" you may have a long wait !!!
What's with pages and pages in numerous threads about the new livery?
Well if my memory serves the first tridents that went too WN for the 529 and BC for the 96/97 21/29 was back in 2001 making them 14, the newest tridents are 11, with an average life expectancy going by the mercs/B6s and B10s being arround 18 years at the most surely we will see withingwithin the next 5 year's the beginning of the withdrawals for the tridents... Don't personally think we will ever see a day where a bus is in active service for longer than 20 years as with the London Routmaster or closer to home our old Metrobuses, as nice as it would be to see them in crimson I can't see it being viable, of course this is all just off top of my head and pure opinion .

Sorry to be pedantic ;) But 4125-4141 were new to WA for the 529 not WN (529 transferred to WN in July 2011).
WN did have a batch new in May 2001 for the 559/560 services (4162-4179)
As I said
@Nathan off the top of my head... But thank you for the correction. :)

I think you'll be seeing Trident withdrawals much sooner than that i.e. like next year if current NX investment levels are being maintained.
In my assumption every thing from 57 plate double deckers will be treated to the Crimson refurb, as mentioned here some where to many gems have been refurbed into red and white to warrant the Crimson treatment. As for single deckers I,d say 08 onwards will be done in Crimson. Most of the early scanias have already been refurbed so I can't see those being done any time soon.
Who knows any thing is possible.
The WB 47XX Gemini's are in a tatty state and deserve a repaint, there is a chance that they might go in to Crimson but it is just a thought.
would love to see 3225 in the new livery rather then B.C C livery
Anything newer than and including the 17** Volvos and 47** Geminis should get Crimson, it is sensible to assume
Walsall's Scania need doing badly - in any of the two liveries - exteriors on most looking a mess. I can certainly see AG's (well some soon to be WB) and YW's being done in Crimson.

Though, that aside, some could receive a repaint into crimson before then? I mean, some buses were scrapped before the red/white repaint, too... Then again, I guess Enviros are a priority?

@2900 Haha - yeah AG aren't great at vehicle patch ups - YW are better at doing them I find; YW now have the vivid red shades of paint which they use for repairs.(ever in Brum look out for 1911,1922,1923. Although on 1923 they've repainted the whole lower front in the newer red which looks smart, and kept the silver lights. Really highlights how the old 2010 paint has faded on them though when looking at their sides in comparison to the front. Shame NX didn't adopt the better quality, vivid red earlier when they first started repaints in 2009.
4266 fresh from paint shop the red used on front front of this bus seemed brighter than normal, the masking up on the window rubbers half arsed so much overspray every where, even masking tape left on here and there, seems like certain amount of rush job on this vehicle.
LS it,ll do only a ALX 400 Volvo no doubt it will spend its twilight years trotting around Walsalls side routes.
So how many NXWM Buses are the new red colour 2 so far I know of 4751 and 4799

Not sure if anybody else has noticed but 4374 still has 2002 No Smoking stickers on upper deck windows. 4665 may still have one on a lower deck window.

I have a suspicion that they'll do anything from 2007 onwards as a priority, though I may be wrong - but i'd like to see the Omnillinks and B7s also...

Be interesting to see what shade of blue/s have been used & what they look like [blue I assume will continue in Coventry]. Presumably it follows the same pattern as the crimson scheme; lighter blue in the middle with a slightly darker shade below and above and gold lining.

Food for thought?? On standard NXC spec repaints, mould the red grey and darker grey seat pattern be replaced with a blue on grey, I know it's off the wall and would be a nightmare on transfers but would complement the outside livery of the bus simular to crimson spec.

Or why not Crimson with leaves or something like Rotalas hybrids. I have to say Rotalas coloured discs in a circle works well. Maybe if NX went with the leaves it might work. As for the cream/gold band going green, nah I think it could confuse folk with the 9, if the 9 wasn't green branded then yeah. But a standard livery with some hint that they are hybrids may work, although the route branding my need a wee bit of a rethink.....
Failing that a British racing green livery might work, with the leaves. But I am sure NX will have an idea already of what they want hybrids to look like in the west kids and Dundee.

is the hybrids going to be done in the new layout but in green?
p.s. i dunno if i've put it in the right one
The Hybrids aren't probably at the top of the priority list for refurbs - they're in very good condition. There's still a fair number of 2007/09 E400s to finish off - then I'd like to see the WA/YW/AG (well not AG for long!) Scanias done - paintwork on most has faded and seat trims need replacing. YW's Scanias could easily be done considering they only run the 27, 6 and 84. If refurbed means YW got a good few routes as Crimson. Personally I'd put the Hybrids into Crimson just to ensure the fleet does move towards one livery.

They need to concentrate on keeping the hybrids on the road before repainting them (Well the E400H's at WN at least). There seems to be a few off the road and has been that way for some weeks.

The understand is that it is only Euro 4 vehicles and newer which will be in crimson, which if so is Enviro 400s, Omni Cities, Omni Links, B7RLEs and E200s.

Nothing has been said on engines. Buses are being done on a route by route basis. 7, 16, 82, 87, 101 and something in Coventry being the first. A lot of Geminis for the 11 were already done before the new livery came out, so they will be red and white.

Yes NXWM have stated it will stay with it for the life of the bus, so it will! It won't have it on initially when it returns from repaint because it will be the first Crimson bus to have a 'new style name-plate'

Because the company don't want them in service yet.
For Crimson spotters, 4752 back in service now. On the 87 (As expected).

Oh right NXWM didn't 'Launch' the crimson livery as such as it was more the "MMC's in a new livery" that they launched if my memory serves me right from the PE thread correct me if I am wrong of course Tony

That is a fine bus ! My only complaint being with the livery as a whole the shades are not to dissimilar which makes them hard to discern

Really smart. Strange seeing them in allover red, I'm too used to the white rear end. Only thing bugging me is that the bent logo (National Express is not straight. Just me being too observant). A grand job

I did deliberately leave them off the paintshop list to surprise everyone when it was finished. What helped was the refurbishment was carried out in Walsall garage, and repairs to Omnilinks in the garage don't look out of place, so presumably no staff who had been in the garage had noticed it was a PB one

PB's Scania Omnilink operated services.
That looks fantastic - once they've done PB's, can we move onto YWs! I'd still like to see the retention of the silver lights (as 1833 did), however for ease of replacement probably makes more sense to keep them in the livery colour.
Still not clear why the gold lining out between the two crimsons at upper deck level continues round the back of the vehicle but not between the two crimsons at lower deck level. Any thoughts what the designers of the new livery might have been thinking anyone?
I think the Crimson ones will focus on 952 first
With 1871 returning to PB in Crimson 1873 has gone to Walsall to be the third crimson Scania
As already mentioned 4750 has gone to Walsall to replace 4741 which is now back at WB
4809 should be today's finished bus
1871: that's more like it, quality its shouting so much better than the red and white.

Looking good in the crimson livery. A question though why is the offside fleet number right under the drivers window and not under the 2nd window as per the norm? Though I have seen a couple of buses with the fleet number in that position 1800 comes to mind. Still looks good regardless of this cannot wait for all the post 57 plate buses DD/SD to be put in the Crimson livery and the Coventry Blue livery as well

@Tony please.
How many more PB Scania's are going in for repaint crimson & will this include the ex Dundee examples
Exactly why would any Scanias be done in the Coventry livery? There aren't any there and I doubt there's any due to move there.
I'm assuming 1863-1877 will all be done certainly - assume maybe the 7XXXs there may do as well - would make sense to have them all in crimson.

Just a query really
@Liberator9 not saying they
should be put in CV livery but could do maybe to replace the remaining CV Mercedes as a batch of Scania's 58 plates were new to CV in 08/09 anyway.
I expect the movement of some of these E400s that have been painted up in CV livery will "displace" some buses at CV on one or two particular routes, releasing some buses at CV to replace the last few Mercs there.

A query I had was what seat trim colour these have - is it as per the Crimson livery or something different?

At a guess I think the 311/313 could be getting the mk2 enviros displaced from the 934/5/6 when the platinums enter service (10th August supposedly). This would then free up the 311/3 b7rle's to go to Dundee.
Only a wild guess but rumour in the garage is 311/3 are getting deckers

Refurb?
Anyway, it looks nicer in real life. I noticed that 'stroke' is green, as opposed to gold, and I know they're dropping the NX title from the logo, but it leads me to think, wouldn't Coventry's buses have looked nicer, had it's yellow stroke been a darker shade of blue? If anyone gets what I mean?
For example: [Net Credit to Peter Fray]
Wouldn't Coventry buses have been nicer in red and cream. With Wasps taking over at the Ricoh arena perhaps yellow and black would be more appropriate in a modern context!

Of those 2-3 will be a Trailways a sub contractor that re-panels buses for NXWM, one is normally at West Bromwich garage being re-paneled, whilst there are circa 3 refurbishment bays within the main Walsall garage as well and another 2-3 being re-paneled within the main paintshop

I sincerely hope not.
Although I guess there are connecting-bars liveried Tridents and so on that will get plain red and white to see out their days.

I think you're absolutely right. It will be interesting to see a form of service apartheid in due course, with the cheap and nasty old livery fleet colonising routes like the 11, 94, 377, 366 etc.

I very much doubt it, they have a new livery now and it will probably take many years to get all vehicles in this new livery, just in time probably for them to have another new livery.

I agree, but Tony says buses are being repainted into new livery by route.
However as NE have said that 6116 -22 are multiuser and can be used on the 140/1/241, then surely a number of Tridents should be repainted to fully convert these routes!

Indeed. Can understand the current system for consistency etc. I think the omnilinks and E400s look superb in the new livery. Will just have to wait our turn I suppose at this end of the network. Hopefully it won't be too long now. Maybe before Christmas? Who knows! Lol. :)
Would be nice to see some Geminis at AG repainted in to the new livery, maybe for the 1 or 11A/C routes? I think it was mentioned as a rumour about branding for the 1, would suit the 1 really as it would then complement the already-Crimson single decks that will get used more regularly at evenings and on Sundays.

There's only 3 more WB E400's to be done after current batch, the Dundee B7RLE's are virtually done and there's only 1 more NXC E400 to do after the current batch going through refurb are completed. This should then allow for a couple of new batches of buses/routes to be treated to Crimson

Traps cost up to £20,000 per bus so the value on a 12 year old bus has to be considered, but yes they can take a bus up to Euro 5 quality

I didn't realize it improved the emissions by 2 ratings, wouldn't it be cheaper to put a new Euro 5 engine in as you would also benefit from improve fuel economy / reduced maintenance etc. Obviously only in buses with sufficient life left where the costs could be recouped

Putting a new engine in a Gemini if it is possible would cost around £40,000 because of all the mods required

I presume when you're looking at that kind of money, it is more cost effective to buy new

You probably could as the B7 is a decent chassis, Wrights bodies don't rot and most engines will give you about 8 years service average, it is whether a company would consider it more value for money than buying new. To put a new Euro 6 B5 engine in, which is what you would need to do to get value for money because Birmingham goes Euro 6 in 2020 would also need a new gearbox, hence the cost

They don't necessarily need to be withdrawn, just moved off Central B'ham routes.
Based on the ADL order it looks as though NX prefer to buy new these days over extensive modifications, the annual fleet renewal programme will make decent inroads in to the Euro 3 fleet before the new restrictions come in to force
I done reading up on the London engineering company called vantage power offering aftermarket hybrid power solutions for trident and Volvo b7tl chassis buses, ensign bus is doing long term trials on these buses. IMO is seems like a more environmental and friendly way reusing buses, building new buses from scratch has more impact on the environment , if you really want to be green extending a vehicle life is better. I thought it's a clever package they offer.
Scania 1874 in west broms garage refurb bay first of this type I,ve personally seen here , currently having all lower panels done , and grey primer applied under the rubber strip below side glass panels. I assume these these scanias can be turned around in short order not much bodywork really is there more glass than anything else, must make them heavy carrying all that about.

WA's ones are pretty bad - most look really tired. The ex AG ones aren't too bad - YW's ones are probably in the best condition. BY would be at the bottom of the pile - only finished redoing them last year - no need for them to redone.

If I remember correctly, only 1838 and 1847 still have their interior mirrors that high up on the front bulkhead, the others have been moved to the top of the front screen. Yes its a very strong electric magnet. If you turn off the master switch, it doesn't work. I've always thought these are safer than the other OmniLinks with the handles
Don't worry about not been able to get out of the cab, I've just had to screw my way out of the cab as the catch had broken! I had not released until someone tried to hand in some lost property and tried to open the door. It's a good job I finished in garage rather than on the road!

It was fun, and something to laugh about! I could not get out of the cab at all until I got back to garage, however hard I tried to kick it. A good job I didn't need to get out in a hurry!
I had not released that I couldn't get out until near the end of my last trip to Minworth in Falcon Lodge when someone tried to hand me some lost property (I had to swing it straight round the first time at Minworth so I never got out). When the shunter came to refuel the bus after I parked it at the pumps, I asked him if he had a screwdriver and he got an engineer to get one, and I had to unscrew the lock to get out
I don't think I could have managed to get out of the window! I have heard stories that another driver has done so, in an OmniLink I think

I can finally talk about Crimson Gemini ,s now 4529 is now done its looks the business vastly superior in this livery , new lease of life to the original iconic design I say. Should look good when more of them roll through the paint shop.

I was thinking they could place it onto the 1, as and when more Crimson Gemini's start to appear. Was only thinking that if they keep 4529 and others onto a particular route and then brand it. The 1 isn't affected by the emissions rule as far as I'm aware?
Funny enough I was thinking that the 1 could be a good candidate for the Crimson Geminis - other options would be the 5 and 31 or perhaps the 73 and 966.

Most likely them, as around 10 gemini's of that batch are in bad repaint and they might be in crimson too, so it's most likely a small route.

As far as I know, these Crimson Geminis will be joined by other Crimson buses operating on the same corridor.
The other Crimson buses aren't Crimson yet.
So basically not the 11.
The 46xx were rumoured to be rebranded for the 11, but there's now talks with the company directors to get new buses approved for it apparently.
I do find it slightly strange that 3 different vehicle types have begun their transformations into the crimson livery, I would have thought they'd finish all the Enviro 400s off then start onto a different type
Why did the OmniLinks get chosen over the Mk 2 B7RLE's despite the fact the latter are newer ?!

Yes
@don it was. Even so, after AG, WA already has the next highest quantity of buses in the new livery / spec. The only WA route that I can see may be treated to Crimson anytime soon might be the 51, as the 61 plate E400's on there are starting to look a little worn. That said, there are far more deserving buses in need of a Crimson repaint first with faded pink front instead of red.

Well yeah but surely they should prioritise crimson morquette as all Gemini's will go into crimson eventually. Also if that was the case why would they have retrimed the E400s, as they has the morquette prior to Crimson red dot.
Its a real shame we won't see no crimson in Tridents.

It's got the new Crimson moquette, not sure what you are going on about, all repaints have new seat covers in the same frames which is exactly what has happened with 4529

While waiting in traffic I noticed a new 200 Mmc lower panels were quite dirty yet with new livery it didn't look the mess it would have been if it were white. Just goes to show picking the right colour to do the job makes all the difference.

4527 back at Acocks Green
There's a Coventry liveried ALX400 in the refurb bay at West Bromwich I assume it's 4421 the fitters didn't waste much stripping this one most lower glazing out ,seats out, this bus must have been rough on the body work side every single panel on the driver side is now off. It's a very comprehensive refurb on this ALX400 should look like new from outside at least when finished.
4421 was in a truly dreadful state with rust covered lower panels.

Aluminium does corrode but differently to Steel, there's few ALX400 at west brom with bubbled paintwork on various panels, it's basically reacted with something to cause it, I did study vehicle bodywork at college I ,ve forgotten the correct terminology for it .

Un-treated aluminium oxidises & discolours when it comes in to contact with something like water, but a protective treatment such as anodising prevents this. You can also have issues if say aluminium panels are fixing to mild steel structural members & get bi-metallic corrosion, which is where dissimilar metals make contact & react with one another and are not isolated by a rubber barrier etc

4421 update every panel on the driver side is now off , I've seen hundreds of refurbs over the years excluding accident repairs this is quite extensive , I haven't seen double decker in recent times being stripped to this level , usually the panels behind the adverts are just filled and sanded back if there's damage from muppets throwing objects at them.

If it really is getting this much attention, it might get repainted in to Coventry's new livery.
Could well be , it,ll be one the best in terms of bodywork straight panels no distortions from filler repairs or outlines from previous liveries. Should be as new externally all most.

Fair enough, just a surprise that's all :)
Maybe I'm just being picky again, but I had my first ride on 4529 today on the 31 this morning (since repaint/refurb), and while it does look great on the outside in the new crimson livery, and the seats have been retrimmed with the new moquette (which doesn't actually look too bad on the older blue plastic seats), I can't help but feel that the rest of the interior still leaves a lot to be desired, with the floors and other interior plastics still looking tatty, dirty, marked or otherwise worn.

You think any ALX400's are going for crimson any time soon?
Recently attended Passenger meeting where it was stated there would be 1000 Crimson vehicles and 200 Platinum NX buses by 2020.
No details as to how many are new or repainted!
Posted in the AG thread but 4534 and 4815 are now done :)
The refurbs are great - look far better.
However two things that need work on in regards to the Geminis; firstly - respray the seatbacks into the NX grey (if possible?) - the blue backs just looks weird with the current moquette. Secondly the poles and seat handles need repainting as well in the brighter, newer red. The Geminis and Tridents have badly faded pinkish poles now. Have noticed on a few of the Tridents (forget the numbers of them at YW now) that they have had this done. There isn't an issue on the E400s or Scanias as it's the correct red shade and hasn't worn down.
Suppose though it comes down to cost - probably not cheap to respray the poles or seatbacks. At least the seats are all done and the bus given a deep clean and excellent repaint.

I don't think that the seat backs could be repainted. They would have to buy a new set of grey ones, it would be a lot easier than taking them off the seat frames, repainting them, waiting for them to dry and reattaching them, vandalism and damage would still be on them too, whereas replacing them, they are new. I do agree with people though, that the blue doesn't sit right with the grey moquette, but it does lighten up the interior
@John Thanks John - did have seeds of doubt in my mind regarding whether they could actually respray the seat backs. Would be pricier then if they had to replace all the seatbacks. Yeah - the blue doesn't sit right.
My favourite interior would actually have to be the Gemini 2 hybrids BC have - really like the green moquette they have and the wooden effect partition downstairs.

Hi John
The paintshop can and do paint some seat sets, but it is a lengthy process and not cheap
Assume that's just reserved for any seats that have been heavily vandalised then. Makes sense now why it's not usually worth repainting them then if it's going to be a long and expensive process.

The older buses like geminis and tridebts you mention actually had pink bars from new it was only when the moquette changed they began to use red poles!
Also some of WB alx have a few resprayed seat backs which look to have had the etching sanded out and are a slightly darker shade of blue!
@BU07 LGO That's true - stupid me. ::) Been using the things for 10 years so should know that. Remember when the Trident 2s were new at Wolverhampton replacing some of the Metrobuses they had the pink.
Of course the B10Ls had their bars repainted from the orange into pink - e.g 1407 and 1434. Would therefore be nice to see some consistency and have the pink bars similarly redone into the newer red (at least on the Gemini Crimson refurbishments). Problem is now that just some of the pink bars are fading off a bit now and look naff in comparison to the newer red shades and new seat covers.
Yeah I've noticed some have had the seatbacks had attention on some refurbs - couple of YW Tridents have had that treatment as well. Looks better for having it. Etching is the worst part on the seatbacks - think that fine felt stuff they use on some later Citaros (some Stagecoach Gold have it as well) seats is quite effective - can't etch on it or draw on it really either.

4760 is back from paint. Out on Dudley Rd today
There's this company clever flockers they can spray most surfaces with flock and gives the appearance of Alcantra used in up market cars, but ultimately it boils down to cost , you just know top deck is open to vandalism , it's a losing game up there .
Well put doors at bottom stairs to prevent people going up there at certain times as others do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there talk of covering up the stairs at quiet times a few years back?
(Never seen it on a Walsall route!)
Some of the metrobuses were fitted with the doors good idea I thought , would be use full if the top deck is vandalised just lock it up rather than have a bus go missing especially at nite for instance on an hourly service. Or your use single decks on routes that can cope with them 127/128/129 IMO doesn't warrant deckers where as 120s could do with more, I digress easily done.

@Tony what happens to buses when they go to hartshornes. This that where they get serviced?

My friend doesn't like how the curve wont suit the box style ALX400, but this livery will suit anything, even if it is one of those god forbidden new Streetdecks.
4466 looking very nice sat at Walsall Garage. IMO, the curves do not suit the box design of the ALX400, it does sit better on the Gemini's. Nontheless, looks very smart indeed.

Wow!!!! That's stunning.
Any idea if it will ruined by having 97 branding reapplied?
Very good! In a way the livery does emphasise the squarer shape of the ALX 400 but that's no criticism. More please!
IMHO the crimson livery looks great, until it is spoilt by having either adverts or branding applied.
Well... 1949 is done.
Another 'first of a batch' now back home
7024 back at PB with 7032 at Walsall for repaint
4466 was out tonight on 97 in the new livery
Looks better than the old livery
4466 looks fantastic.
Didn't think I'd say that but it is impressive. Good work.
I'm probably the only one who doesn't like it then tbh. It looks good because the paint is fresh, same with the Geminis. I much prefer the revised TWM low floor livery, as the Geminis/Tridents came new in, as well as the short lived toothpaste livery, as 4718-4736 came new in.
It is however certainly a smart livery, and much better than the red and white livery. I think the problem for me is, it's lacking blue, basically. I think the Crimson livery looks good on the MMCs (both single and double deck), but on these older buses, it doesn't look right. It looks too London-ified, especially on the Tridents.

I agree with you,
@MW. When I saw 4466 myself, I had a feeling I wouldn't like it. The gold curve is too pronounced (like a quartered circle curve) whereas the MMCs have a nice decline. I just wish they kept the TWM livery or applied the toothpaste livery on all buses. Now that would be awesome.

Don't get me wrong these liveries don't even come close to quality of low floor TWM, but we have to realise that livery will never return.
As a compromise we have this, 'London-ified', smart livery. We can moan about there not being any blue but NX management really couldn't care less so what's the point.
I have to agree with you their
@MW The E400MMCs don it really well and so do the Geminis. Of anything the crimson geminis in the dark are a sight to behold.
My main problem with the livery is personally, I don't think the crimson stands out enough (I.e. the 2 red shades dont contrast enough)
They could be known as the Invisible bus company (after dark) if the fleetname isn't a "registered trademark" if that is the correct expression!
I was only thinking this today when I saw an Maroon liveried AG Gemini on the 966 approaching in the dark at the International Station as a 900 went the other way and both just disappeared into the gloom.
In bright sunshine the new liveries look great but at night...!
Dave
I do like the crimson but you're right in saying it seems very dark on a dark December evening. And it's no doubt true that the paintwork will have to be kept shiny - platinums too - or it'll look drab.
Being washed every day wont help with paint fade :(
And i really hope when someone does prang one nx actually repaint the damaged panels properly to match not like some of the enviros that have the white paint brushed on!!
The new livery is smart and i think it makes the buses look newer and more up market... Shame about the passengers ;)

Five buses finished last week
1949; 4466; 4645; 4657 all in Crimson
4421 in Coventry blue/white

4449 should be the next trident called in.
One repaint in red/white will be 4175. When the overall advert was removed it took all the paint with it, so the advertising company are paying for a repaint
I must admit, the 11A/C branding is looking nice! Glad to see them branded again.
Now all we need is some new buses for it :P

Because Double Decks below 4425 won't be done.
Tony has stated they won't paint one offs. Buses are being painted in batches then Crimson is being rolled out on a route by route basis
I.e WB E400's for the 82/7, PB E400's for 16/101, BC 44** Tridents for 97 etc.

Quite a few of the 2001 Tridents are looking in need of a repaint, though I expect next year will see some of them withdrawn. I think it's a shame they can't be treated to crimson. Does crimson livery cost more to apply than red and white?

No, but why would you paint (and retrim as all crimson repaints get retrimmed) a bus with a life expectancy of 18-24 months when you have buses with 5-10 years life left in need of work?

Buses like 4452 and 4695 need work which are going to around for longer...
4452 (New in 2003 so should have around 3 years left) has a big tear in it's paintwork https://www.facebook.com/369276339910972/photos/a.379207495584523.1073741905.369276339910972/404085699763369/?type=3&theatre
4695 has an extremely messy interior and could do with a refurb.
It is a shame for these 2 vehicles as one person said that no Coventry Buses are to be repainted for at least a year...
Exactly, as has been stated, there is no point in spending money on a bus that is due to be off shortly; and Crimson is only being done batch by batch, which is currently working well. It needs to be remembered these buses are assets to NX and there is no point on spending money on them if it's going to be financially worthless in doing retrimming and repaints.
On another note, good see 7024 has retained the Scania batch following refurbishment - looks very smart.

I agree with you,
@Liverpool Street. I miss old buses - they had so much character than new buses. They were simple (no added features like wi-fi, microphone, etc). I'm just glad I had great years of travelling on old buses. I miss them and will miss the earlier Tridents when they go. At least I still have the fond memories of the good old days... Sometimes I wish I was born a bit earlier like in the 80's haha.

For me growing up it was fleetlines (Daimler/Leyland ) before metrobuses came along bringing in more moderner buses for them days lol. Nationals then Lynxes came along too, some of the new buses are great. Me personally I don't mind the 200/400 mmcs but would prefer Voith gearboxes in the 400MMCS but that's my personal opinion which will be argued by others due to the diversity of this great forum. Looking forward to see what the next batch of new buses to be delivered whatever the livery they are in

Yeah - in terms of passenger experience these are the best buses yet for the West Midlands - the MMCs' interiors are a step up from previous models. In terms of buses that's the main thing - having a modern functioning bus fleet. No offence, but the B10Ls, Tridents have had their time and it's time to move on to the next generation of buses, which will ultimately provide a better experience (fine there are exceptions - some of the original batch of E200s aren't great always).
I've never been amazed by the Tridents in terms of a passenger perspective - found them rather run down looking at times, look of an old looking interior design and awful in terms of heating and keeping out the rain.
Character wise I still think the new ones have got it - the E200MMCs remind me a bit of the B10Ls and the Scanias are great as well. The Gemini IIs and Streetdecks I've always found good. Bit like trains really - people lament the loss of steam, yet now many are becoming concerned with the loss of early 80s, late 70s stock. No doubt at the time views on them were mixed. I've always tended to welcome the new stuff, or call for it - provided it's well built and serves it purpose well. I don't appreciate all the moderns though - Optares in particular are my hate (especially Versas).
Anyway I'll stop going off on a tangent from the main topic. Saw a number of the refurbished buses today (Gems, Scanias, E400s) and must say all looked excellent. Far cry from the red and white.

Yes, to protect the driver!
How many times have drivers had complaints against them which the driver has denied and the company accused by the drivers of always backing every complaint even if it is not valid?
Suddenly stupid irrelevant complaints like 'the driver had an attitude' suddenly become investigated
'What happened to the other bus?'
'Dunno'
'Oh this driver has attitude' etc etc etc
Best to not say anything at all ever

You're so right! When the first Fleetlines came along in 1963 they seemed so characterless compared with the older BCT Daimlers and Crossleys they replaced - plasticky, rattly, always breaking down. But when those same BCT Daimlers and Crossleys entered service people said they were characterless compared with the trams they replaced!

Sadly, we live in an age where 'the customer is king', and they can make such petty complaints about the most trivial of matters. I think it can only help the driver if there is audio evidence that proves a passenger (sorry, 'customer') is just making a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to complaints to customer service.
And I also find it abhorrent that a driver could potentially lose their job for refusing some chav with a 'dodgy Daysaver' who then bleats and moans to NX Customer Services saying that the driver had 'bad attitude'.
That's the kind of situation where I feel these measures actually protect the driver. Just my thoughts, from someone who worked for a company that recorded telephone conversations with customers, and had a complaint against me thrown out because of the recorded evidence that proved I wasn't abusive to the customer, despite their insistence!
A driver I know basically was sworn at and verbally abused. The driver lost it and told the passenger to F off. This was on an MMC and the driver was suspended.
Whether this is right or wrong, you be the judge.

I always check the mic is off when I get on its amazing how many drivers have the mic still turned on without realising
How can you switch the mic off ?
Surely the microphone like the cctv is there to protect you from false claims from the travelling public ?
