Title: New Forum Features - May Issue
Post by: Liverpool Street on May 14, 2014, 06:18:24 PM
Hi All!

Only a few small updates which commensurate with some of the recent issues we've had with 'certain' members.

Please read the rules before you post - This is now printed before all "Post" buttons, as we've said - Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse to break them.

@mention members -
We've noticed some members trying to contact others on individual posts but without quoting what they have said, so this modification allows a direct contact with members. Especially useful for busy threads and hopefully should cut down on the amount of quotes. You'll be notified by E-mail and/or PM.

Email Inactive Members - The system will automatically email inactive members [more then 45 days] with a post count of less then 10 messages and will automatically schedule those accounts for deletion.

Please feel free to try out the new mentions tool, we hope it'll make your experience here at WMBiP a bit easier!

Yours,

West Midlands Buses in Photographs Forum

Excellent idea with the mention tool. Only yesterday I'd been thinking it'd be useful to attract the attention of the intended recepient of a post.

@Matt

Thanks for your comments, I trust it is working correctly?

I can see the mention feature come in handy. All that's missing is the ability to like posts, there are some fantastic posts on this forum

@Liverpool Street Seems to be working fine - as long as you know the member ID of the person you are addressing!

@Matt
Probably more helpful for use on mobile devices and the use of the Quick Reply box? Either way.

Oh, and just forgot to add, I've updated the previous security patch so hopefully no more bad gateways!

I like how the error code for a bad gateway was 502 - reminds me of a certain B6!

Great features. I like it! It will definitely be useful in the future. I'm glad there will be no more bad gateways, it used to annoy me a lot. xD

@ Liverpool Street,

While you're in an 'enhancing mood', is there any chance you could lift the restriction on the PM settings so you can send a message more than every 60 secs? It's a annoying at times.......

An Error Has Occurred!
The last personal message from your IP was less than 60 seconds ago. Please try again later.

The same goes for posting. Especially as the 60 second "timer" starts again if you trigger the filter. 30 seconds should do the trick

No problem, I'll remove that issue now.

Thanks for your feedback!

@Liverpool Street did you manage to resolve the "60 second timer" issue?

Why is there a rule on deleting if not posting over 10 times. I used to be a pretty active member on this forum. I still go through the forum every day or two, and drop an occasional comment. Not sure if I've commented over 10 times in the last 45 days though.

To be honest I think this rule needs to be looked at.

Perhaps changing it to members who haven't logged in for 45 days rather than posting messages. 45 days is still a little short if I'm honest.

I agree with Michael. I live in Chicago and use this forum to keep up to date with what is happening in my old hometown.

I tend to reply to historical questions, but doubt I post more than 10 messages in 45 days, although I check the Forum nearly every day.

@Michael, @busfan2847 - It is for people who are UNACTIVE for 45 days with a TOTAL post count of LESS THEN 10. You two have nothing to worry about.

@Matt, I have sorted it - If I recall correctly I've set it to 15 seconds, which is fair, unless you're a bot.

There are apparently "6 spiders online". The perks of being on the world wide "web" I guess.

What's this @Liverpool Street?

@Matt, they're basically archive bots from Google and other search engines which archive our website and other bits on the site to a) Make loading faster B) Give a richer experience to new visitors.

But you've got the correct analogy there, Matt.

No, Christopher. It's just Google and Yahoo archiving our site for faster loading. It means nothing.

Why does the search tool make you wait 60 seconds before you can search again and why can we not input words smaller than two characters long? Can somebody change this please? (Answer will probably be 'no' but heh, worth a try...)
