Matt really wants to go to PN garage and he will be back tommorow night so i will ask him tony.
I did really enjoy my visit to Park Lane Garage and Matthew Jukes from WN garage has said i can do my work experience at WN next year!
That sounds like a very welcome idea to me, maybe it would be better to select a couple of the most popular depots & do a tour of a few all in the same day or over two separate dates, it may prove easier for NXWM to organize?
For me, I'd quite like for the tours to potentially include any the following BC, CV, PB, WA & WN, BY & AVL would also be an interesting visit as would the reserve fleets at MS & LH
Yes would love to see a garage or even the AVL side @ bordesley :-)
I WOULD LOVE IT! Preferably a tour of every depot, lol ;) Just Kidding.
Mainly:
BC, PB, WA, WB & PN
The Garages I would like to visit would be
AG, BC & WA
Yes please, i would like to visit any West Mids garage
Ive been to all garages except
PE & WA thats simply becuase I dont know were they are ;D

pennsnett is on pennsnett trading estate.
Walsall on green lane you cannot see this garage from the road at rear of original garage.
hope that helps.
For me either BC WA PB or any reserve fleet areas would be places id like to visit if that was ever possible
I would like to register my interest as well...
I can't wait for visit to PB,BC,WB!
It sounds, for purely educational purposes, interesting

Ive only passed WN garage I forgot about that garage.
Been inside PB, sat in the a Bendi Bus and got some pictures if you look on my flickr =D
An Ill have to go look at PE garage
Also what happended to CV garage thats still a garage ?. Its still in the West Midlands just not in Birmingham
I have already visited WN twice and will be doing work experience there next year:) WA and BC are garages i'd like to visit
I guess due to H&S they do not do 'open days' like they used to? they were great I only went to a few but to go through the bus wash was amazing. I have probably been round all the garages as a kid and most the ones I would like to see now are no longer garages. I always wanted to go round the Tyburn works but even when it was open I believe it was a big No-No. My fav was probably Selly Oak they seamed to have all the buses I 'needed' and when it was used for storage it was great for the old Fleetlines & Metro's. I guess now I would like a nose round Miller Street to see what goes on there, I don't really know but it seams like a bit of a Tardis, lots going on but it doesn't look very big! Or maybe Pensnet being a newer garage, I've been there but not inside it

I managed it once!
Yes me again..I know its late but I just had a Brainwave maybe they could do a garage visit like when the police do an open office where offenders can ominously surrender weapons etc
NX could do a 'surrender your out of date daysaver/travelcard' without getting a fine, there could be a competition for:
'the longest out of date ticket'
'most extreme case of 'non transferable ticket'
'Best Cut & Paste Ticket'
and for the finale...
Best excuse for not having a valid ticket!....
Yeah it's December innit?
'yes but yours is December 2010, we are now in 2013'
'yeah but its December innit'
'Yeah but December 2010 was 2 Christmases ago, I should remember I rowed with the Mrs On Both!'
'You gonna let me on or not?'
'Is your ticket valid?'
'Yes It's valid till December I just told you you stupid idiot dumb F***** Driver, Now drive your bus mo fo'
'Ok no problem sir....once you show me a valid ticket or offer a payment'
'Geezer..Yo Big Man, safe yeah? I got me a tag see, got no wedge'
'Unless you get off this bus now and run very quickly, you'll have an ever bigger tag tomorrow'
'respect'.....dodger leaves.....meanwhile
Dorris has missed the first Bingo call
Terry (when he gets there) has been stood up cause his date is fed up of waiting
Johns fish & chips are now cold
Gary the alkie has finished all his Frosty Jacks and has now urinated while seated
Brenda has forgot where she is
The Driver is late, will finish late, bus late for next driver/return to garage
And all because some blithering idiot does not want to pay a poxy £2 fare for a ride that would cost double in a car!!!
LOL ;D ;D ;D
Would be a great experience! The best open day I went to was at Patk Lane in the late 90's. for £3 you could drive a bus! I had 9062 :-)

I first visited Park Lane when i was 6 in 2005 and i'm sure i went through the bus wash.
This year in April they allowed me once again to visit the garage where i got the chance to sit in the cab of an E400H (5418) before it went into passenger service and At Wolverhampton City Show i sat in the cab of a B5LH.
Plus WN is a massive garage (Has the second biggest allocation not far behind BC doesn't it?)
Sounds like it would be a fantastic experience. I have registered my vote for Pensnett, but would be interesting whichever garage is chosen. =)
Would also be nice to get to meet some of the forum regulars too.

Any further details? Please please don't tell me they will clash :o
The YW and AG open days are on the same day with shuttle buses provided
I voted for Pensnett as it's my local garage, Wolverhampton as it's Nath's local garage and he recommends it to me, and Walsall because of the large variety of buses there

Should have rephrased.... I'm crap at typing sometimes, I never read what I put...
What I meant was that I'm not surprised, as YW actually do open up occasionally
I've been to all of the depots a few years ago :)

AG, BC, YW, PB, WA, LH, BY, CV, WB, PE. Not been to WN though.
I even drove an ALX400 at PB when nobody was watching haha.

Nope you are incorrect and so is Winston. It was years ago, I was 14 (18 now). I wasn't caught on the bright side, so not "people like me."
A prat is the person who robbed the pre delivery paperwork out of the Coventry Scanias when they were new at Walsall, which is why Walsall deny access to the depot now.

Idiot then! you basically took a vehicle without concent whether or not it actually left the gates at the age of 14 without any form of driving licence which is a criminal offense. What would have happened if you had lost control of the bus you took?

You were risking every chance you ever had of driving buses as a profession in the future, if you'd been caught you would most likely never be allowed in a cab again

Why is that thinking on the bright side????? It would have served you right if u had been. Tbf if u did it as a stupid action which ur sorry for then fair enough, but if u think posting it on here so it is read by NX management is a good idea and constitutes gloating then think again mate because it just gives us all a bad name. Tbf tho the fact that you chose a b7/alx400 makes me loose even more respect for you as theyre horrid :P Seriously tho stupid thing to do

Yes I agree, once the handbrake is off a bus and it is moving it is a lethal weapon in the hands of somebody who hasn't been trained on it or under training with a second competant person there

I agree regarding the comments posted on this issue, as a professional driver I can whole heartily agree with Tony's words. Buses are not toys, they are 12 ton dangerous vehicles, one mistake in them you can kill or at best seriously injure many people! It makes you wonder why NXWM won't let enthusiasts onto the site these days, with comments like that I now understand why >:(

I'm wondering what sort of class one IQ=0 would brag about that on a public forum. Especially one which is openly (rare, that...) host to management - who was (until now) amenable to the enthusiast community. Psv enthusiasts are looked on as a bunch of retards already, without f*ckwits like you proving it.
BTW, My Father's (who drove for Midland Red/WMPTE/Diamond - amongst others) partner died in a depot accident that occurred in less than 10 FEET - & there were no Hanovers in those days to p!ss about with either...
Thank you for once again getting sensible bus enthusiasts a bad name amongst management, It's just a shame you weren't caught in the act so they could have banned you there and then and done everyone a favor, Class A Twat...
I wanna have a look around birmingham central garage
What the hell. I've already said I know it's not right. It was a silly thing to do yes, and it had its risks, I understand that.
What more can I say.
And to Trident4609, they weren't that strict before. The only depot they showed us around was in LH. Once at BC too, but the other few times not.

This is in hand and will be organised for members of this forum to do a tour of Walsall
Over the weekend can I have best dates for everyone during half term at the end of October so I can tell the person organising it when will be best. I appreciate different days will be better for different people, but largest consensus will win.
Monday to Friday is better than weekend as the paintshop and training school are closed on weekends

That is the same for Dudley school half terms
I can do any day that week w/c 28th
My only proviso is if it has to be on a Thursday, can it start after 10.30am or finish before 3pm as I have to take & collect my little boy from nursery on that day
Could I ask that it's not a Thursday as I'm busy that day, any other day is great

Tony, is it possible for two days? I wouldn't mind the weekend, because that's when i'm available. Mon-Fri are school days and i won't be able to make it... If not, then hopefully if there's one at PB or BC on a weekend, you could count that i'd be there! ;)

As I stated further up the thread it will hopefully be either Tuesday or Friday of half term. Weekends, some parts of Walsall are locked up and unvisitable

The visit and tour of all of Walsall garage will be at 11am on Friday 1st November (That is the day the garage manager is available). Any one from the forum is welcome, but please say whether you are coming on here so she has a clue of how many she is going to escort around
I will be there Tony!
What bus passes WA garage.

There are a few still dumped there in a line, should be able to photograph them. Photographs are banned in the paint shop though
I'll be there and I'll be going with James :)
I shall hopefully be going to this (in between studying and work!)
me and rob4367 will be up Walsall bus garage on 1st november

It is when the garage manager is available to escort you around. This isn't an open day, it is a group tour of all parts of the garage. She cannot waste a whole day waiting for individual people to turn up, and no-one is allowed in a working garage unescorted

Ok, that makes sense... I'm having slight second thoughts on going, due to the far distance and the number of buses i'll be needing to catch! But i really do want to go... I
do class myself as a child (i'm 12), can i still go without an adult, (unsupervised on travel/depot*)

The paintshop manager has given permission for visitors to visit the paintshop on the tour but has set down a few rules
you need to explain to the enthusiasts prior to arrival to the paint unit, obviously no smoking in the workshop, no use of mobile phones in the area of the spray booth and mixing room, any enthusiast with serious asthma or breathing difficulties must declare it.
Frank will show them round but they must have an additional NX escort who will be responsible for them while they are on site and enthusiasts must stay in the group, no wandering off on there own.
sorry to sound like a pain but i have some serious kit in the paint unit and i don't want anybody coming to any harm.
Tony, I'd like to be there too.

tony, are you going to be there?
I think Tony will be there. If this becomes a success, I hope the next depots to be done should be: BC, PB or PE. What do you guys think?

Been to PB twice first time both times theyve been pretty empty, but Did get the chance to see inside the garage properly and watch the buses come in after finishing there trips, so yes would recommend a trip there

Well i am bringing my own NX Hi-Vis Jacket which i kept from my Park Lane garage visit :) Btw is the tour definetley going ahead tommorow? Don't want to turn up and find it isn't going ahead ;)
Worth a shot just going there to see the remainder buses, it should still be going ahead, but this'll mean i'd have to get up super early if i'm leaving my house for 11am at WALSALL! If only it were Perry Barr...
However, it'll be an adventure for trying new routes, like the 301/302.

Early start for me tomorrow, I have to go all the way from Halesowen to Wednesfield to meet Nath, then to Walsall
bit of a early start for me to gotta meet rob at the wheatsheif on the cov road then catch the 900 all the way to Birmingham then X51 to Walsall an 301 or 302 to the garage
Pfft, all these "early starts"
I get a lie in tomorrow morning, it's brilliant!
Don't really need a lie in ;) Just need to catch the 19 from Lichfield Rd in Wenesfield to Walsall garage or most likley an 89 then 301/2

Well the latest i have to leave out is at 0941, but Journey Planner told me to catch the Diamond 16, instead of NXWM, but still, once i get there, i'd have at least around 15 minutes to kill, so why not wait for my NX16 to come, also, whilst i'm waiting for everyone else, i might aswell have a 'ponder' around Walsall Garage, no longer than 5 minutes, just to get used to the area...

You can't just 'ponder' around the garage due to saftey reasons. You have to sign in at reception then they will give us our hi-vis jackets
Yes first rule of tomorrow is anyone who turns up at anytime other than 11am will not be allowed into the garage. There will be no one available to escort you around at any other time

Get off the 301/302 1 or 2 at the 'Doghouse' Antiques shop, walk up Carl Street, once into NXWM property (car park) follow the yellow footpath markings and signs which lead you to reception
Don't worry i know where you mean :) I go past Walsall Garage regually (Went past there aboard 677 on the 301) Just wasn't sure whether i had to go up Carl Street or not. Thanks for the info :)

not really around the garage ::) just around the general Walsall Area...
...and so on leaving the garage, everyone flags down the second 301 coming just because its an Eclipse... Driver probably had no clue, funny as hell to watch

I have put a larger version on this time and put numbers above heads so people can say who they are.
I haven't numbered the young lady in the cap at the front as she is mother to number 8. Only person I didn't drive through the bus wash!
Number 15 is whoever is hiding behind number 13.
Far left is Frank, paintshop manager, Far right is Jenny Operations Manager, Walsall, now who is inbetween?
Number 6
Is it fair to say, using a perpindicular pronoun to describe number 4, as the present interlocuor who is providing the current post.

So is Dylan 4579 the young black lad then?
Yes I am
So nxwmbusfan1999 must be the chap on your left shoulder.
Finally that's sorted. Cheers Dylan.
just logged in so catching up - took the wife out for a meal
Thoroughly enjoyed the visit ( yes, I am no 5). I never realised what a age range we have on the group from the youngsters to people my age.
Great meeting up with everyone.
Alan
Does anybody have any idea who number 1 was? He and number 5 were the only people I couldn't identify!
I am number 13, and the guy hiding behind me whose identity is obscured is Joe (trident4370).
EDIT; I don't know who number 2 is either, misidentified him
That'll teach me for yacking while having a picture taken... Would like to thank Tony and Jenny for organising it though, a great day and I learned some new stuff which is always good along with meeting new people in the spotterworld!
I am number 1. ;D

No 5 is the legend that is Alan Brookes that had a HY B7TL/ALX400 named after him, one of 4266-4269 which were branded for the 16 (can't remember which one)

Hi
I am a new member on the forum and would be interested in any planned garage visits.
My recollection of garage visits in my youth was bunking around places like Harborne, Selly Oak Quinton and Oldbury.
I got thrown out of Hockley too once i had seen everything and that was in the days of standards!
Only place i never got round was Tyburn Road works although you could see things on the sides and back so any pictures of the inside of that place are always valued.
Cheers
we haven't planned any garage visits yet crepello .
Thanks for the Heads up and will keep my eye on the forum from time to time.
Cheers
Will there possibly ever be another forum group garage visit in the future?
For garage visits i wanna visit miller street and birminghan central

I imagine it'll either be 26th-30th May or the big holiday in July/August. :)
*note to self, pay attention when Tony takes the group photo this time*
I'd definitely be up for a visit to Acocks Green, as its only a short walk from my house!
Last time I went there was a brief whirlwind tour one evening when I went to collect my lost mobile phone, which one of their engineers had found.

15 minutes to Bearwood then 45 minutes round the circle seems the best option for me (that's if I'm not in an exam!)
The irony there is we could end up arriving on the same bus :/

If I do go I can get either the 60/900/957 from Sheldon to Yardley Swan then the 11C to the Garage or the Diamond 96/99 to the village then walk up from there and I'm sure I'll be with James if I do go.

No, nxwmbusfan1999. Read properly. Tony said "Acocks Green".
Technically, Tony said 'a garage'. He said the Acocks Green manager has agreed to do this, but maybe not at AG. Maybe the AG manager will come down to another depot? I'm not sure... ;) :P

Quick way: Metro to Snow Hill, 31 or 37 to Acocks Green, 11C or walk to garage.

Think i might use the tram to speed up the journey then the Outer Circle.
I wouldn't be surprised if i wasn't the only one travelling over from W'ton. I travel that far on my travels mist Weekends so i will manage it lol ;)

If you mean the tram Wolves to Soho then the Outer Circle, that would take an awfully long time. I'm not sure which way round the circle would be quicker. If you mean the tram to Birmingham then that takes forever, not far off an hour I think.
I'd just get the train, it'll get there in no time. In the time the 59 takes from Wednesfield to Wolves, the express trains can do Wolves to Birmingham

Isn't there a train you can get to a cooks green
I don't really like using the train (Just prefer the tram ;)) It will all depend what Type of Pass i buy i guess on that particular week of the visit? Whether my Usual N-Bus, Bus and Tram or N Network
I'd rather buy an N-bus+Tram as i would probably use the bus&tram during that half term week so i wouldn't want to pay extra for the N Network if i would only use the train a couple of times just for one day during that week. The tram then then the 37 seems the best options :)
Thanks to everyone for the replies :)

Acocks Green station is pretty far from the bus depot, whereas Spring Road is literally behind the bus depot, pretty much.
I'll probably show my face this time ;)
I make a appearance as its my local garage
If this does go ahead, as Michael has already stated, if you're coming by train, Spring Road station is much closer, the depot is a short five minute walk (come out of the station, turn right onto Spring Road, then left onto Summer Lane.
If you do end up at Acocks Green station, then hop on the 11C which is a short five minute journey to Fox Hollies Road by the depot, or a 20 minute walk.

No, you can't just turn up.
You have to ideally get written permission from NX or have phoned management at the garage beforehand to agree a date/time
Get a high viz, and go in. If you ask at YW, they'll say no. So sod it and don't ask. They won't find out. Or go on the 18, sit upstairs at the front with your high viz on. It goes into the garage as part of the route. At least it did approx 6 years ago.

The 18 has never gone into the garage as part of its public route. Comments like that will see you visiting your manager very sharpish!

Ask for permission via the correct channels if your interested in visiting.

The 18 has never gone into the garage as part of its public route. Comments like that will see you visiting your manager very sharpish!
And yes they may notice, last time I was in YW I got asked to see my employee 'passport' by someone who didn't recognise me

Get a high viz, and go in. If you ask at YW, they'll say no. So sod it and don't ask. They won't find out. Or go on the 18, sit upstairs at the front with your high viz on. It goes into the garage as part of the route. At least it did approx 6 years ago.
I'm sorry to say this but MW should be barred from this forum with comments like that.

Good advice there, especially considering you're an employee!

Probably is, the only problem is that somebody might take him seriously and land both themselves and MW into trouble.
I was thinking of going AG tomorrow, going inside to the reception and asking for a potential guided look around or photos from a safe position, a refusal is understandable if it no prior notice has been given.

I agree.
I once did just "pop in", some drivers that saw me didn't give 2 craps, I went to the office and the guy never said anything, instead he just greeted me and we just had a little conversation.
Years ago, I used to go to every WMPTE/WMT garage, ask politely and get in (usually with the promise of avoiding the pits and workshop areas) and I always said a polite thank you when I left, usually clutching the latest copy of the depot fueling sheet!
I realise with H&S it's all different these days, but can we please have some common sense here? Write in or call the garage concerned who will say yes or no. Bring a Hi-Viz. if the answer is no, then it's no for a good reason, please respect that. And for god sake, act responsibly and safely, as has been said, garages are private property and you can be done for trespassing if you've no good reason to be there.

Exactly, which is why it is best not to make comments like that on a forum like this.
Somebody sneaks into a garage and gets seriously injured or even worse, then it will affect each of us because all depot visits will be banned and quite probably NE (and other companies no doubt) will be loath to do anything for enthusiasts in the future.
Best advice is to contact NE in advance and get permission to visit, then you can be shown around and stay safe at the same time.

A lot of independent small operators are happy to let enthusiasts have a look around their depots if you just walk in and ask someone there. But the larger operators (national express etc) are probably far more worried about health and safety etc.
there is another big difference, a small operator only has a small number of employees with a few things going on at any time, a garage with over 100 buses based there will always have something going on, machinery in use, vehicles moving etc.
I wish it was still the same as when I was a teenager and you could basically just walk up and ask politely and get around almost any bus or railway depot, but there does seem to be a lot more people about without the 'self-preservation skills' trying to enter premises nowadays

How times have changed, not always for the better.
These days someone is always ready to take legal action against a company even if they have an accident which is their own fault.
If I was in charge of a depot would I take the risk of letting someone wander arround? I hate to say no.
I very much doubt any one can just walk into any depot and wonder around, of course without a hi vis on they will get spotted and asked to leave.
If I was you people who want to visit garages, I would just wait for open days to be organised, or ask in reception rather then just going in, as every TWM like WA has loads of guards patrolling the depots due to criminal damage etc

I did surgest to Tony, if we did have tours of the garages, it will stop temptation of people "just going in" with no staff with them etc

We did WA a little while ago, was very interesting!
Problem is you can't keep having depot tours all the time as people would loose interest, you need a decent number of people to attend so that it's worth while.

I think you have to ring/write to the depot asking if its possible to do a visit. I have always wanted to do West Broms depot as i grew up on Dartmouth Street not far from the depot.

If you are photographing buses in the depot from the road on public property then that is perfectly legal and nobody can legally stop you from doing it.
As for having Security Guards (and Security Guards with dogs) at bus depots - that does seem a bit rediculous - i dont think that bus depots are that dangerous places and i doubt that anyone would walk in to a bus depot and start vandalising vehicles.
You would think the security guards would know if anyone is allowed to take a photo !
Buses are usually parked up with their doors open which can theoretically mean any one can quickly jump on and drive out, so in many regards have security there does make sense !

Why is it rediculous? Several garages were targeted in burglaries involving Cash Vaults within the past year hence theincreased security...

@countryliner are you serious. At NE garages there is always something going on, and you just can't have people wondering about unescorted. It's not a case of vandalism, it's a case of people walking in uninvited and getting seriously injured or worse because nobody knows they are there!!

Some people used to walk into AG and they apparently stole a couple of bikes, and a motorbike, and then vandalised a couple cars. Not sure about buses. People also break in to steal the ticket rolls for some reason. Must be making fake ones lol. They seal it now. Not sure if any of you have seen the gate at AG.

If NXWM gave change and did not have fareboxes then that would not have been a problem as the money would have been with the driver or in the office and not left in the farebox on the vehicles.
I have never heard of any other bus operators having Security Guards in their bus depots. I am surprised that people would just walk in to a depot and have a look around or start stealing stuff. I am sure it would happen occasionaly but i would not think that it would be a regular occurance.
If the driver gave change then you would see a dramatic increase of robberies and violence on buses themselves.
I like the idea of walking into a garage and having an innocent look around although being realistic, you don't want to be in the same space as a 10+ tonne vehicle moving around. Their is no harm in having security their, its prevention if anything

If people are willing to steal the vaults from the fareboxes on the buses, then i am sure they wouldn't worry about mugging a driver. NE is not some small bus company, they take a considerable amount of money, is it worth putting drivers at risk just because 1 person per shift requires change?

@GeminiFan1991 Would you walk in to an office block with people working or a factory / warehouse for a casual look round uninvited ? No! Because it's a business & private property, just the same as any bus garage. Anyone wishing to look around a business has to go in as a visitor, sign in & be escorted around by someone familiar with the hazards or you have to have a site induction.

It's not as easy as that. You need permission from Head Office to be able to go into a depot.
Ah I see, so wouldn't that person be better off doing this and getting permission? I think some people don't realise what actually goes on at a bus depot

Basically turned up at the shutter door where buses go in and out telling staff he was coming in to photograph 4010!
This is quite extreme ! I understand him going into the office and politely asking for a guided look around as their is no harm in asking but to barge in ! WA has loads of buses, many will be moving back and forth, his lack of concern for regulation could have potentially caused a serious incident.
I've visited 8 out of the 10 garages but they have all included me photographing from the road (Which is quite limiting) but I'm perfectly able to do so. I've asked managers for a look around but no response sadly.
This day in age, he's lucky he didn't spark some sort of security alert - I mean, how would anyone know what he's up to? - Apart from the obvious when he spoke out, but on CCTV though...
Over at Stagecoach's Nuneaton depot, the operations and engineering managers have recently taken one of the drivers into the office to look at a CCTV image of a certain sticky fingered rail and bus "enthusiast" who tends to frequent said driver's buses (Just to point out that the driver was completely innocent in all of this) sneaking round the depot on either a Sunday or Bank Holiday when there is nobody around most of the time, before jumping onto one of the buses and tearing out the destination blind and walking off with it. Probably the explanation for why 39690 is now going about with a load of loose wiring dangling about where its side blind used to be.

Totally out of order. It's not like the 'good old days' when you could turn up at a garage and ask to look round. I agree about Walsall and Selly Oak was tough to get into too. Lea Hall, Acocks Green,Park Lane and Yardley Wood were always quite welcoming. We always asked permission by the way.
Lol this reminds me of the time I went to PB back when I was 14 and found a running ALX400 in the back yard. I drove the bus like a metre forward lol. Didn't get caught doing it tho. Good times. They got strict at Walsall when the 1863-1877 Scanias were delivered and someone pinched some documents out of them if I'm right.

Very true
@Dom, but the problem is that it only takes one "bus enthusiast" to go to a garage and talk like they own the place, or to go trespassing or stealing things from buses and the management of what ever company is involved then get a negative impression of all bus enthusiasts. As they say, it only takes one rotten apple in a fruit bowl to spoil the rest.
Was only just thinking, when i was young in the early 1970s and wanted to catch a bus from Stourbridge bus station, you didn't have to wait around as all the buses were left open, if it was a one man bus, you waited for the driver to get on and then everybody got up to pay there fare and show the driver there pass. You couldn't do that these days, as the driver probably wouldn't have much of a bus to drive when the vandals had finished with it.
Sadly there's too many people like this in this hobby. For example, First in West Yorkshire have always been open to having enthusiasts having a look around as long as they were sensible and were accompanied at all times - until two people managed to get into the depot, climb on damaged and withdrawn vehicles, and go around starting up buses and opening panels etc etc, and not leaving them as they were found...before revving buses, filming it and uploading it to YouTube.
Some people really do lack common sense, and I hope that this character has not ruined the chances for sensible enthusiasts to have a look around whilst following instructions of NX staff.

Makes no difference to me, I will be at Showbus anyway. By the way we ran a stall at last years open day for the benefit of the garage in all that wet weather so I don't think I'm ungrateful. Plus only having one stall we can't be in two places at once, think before you speak.
Talk about quite the advance notice ! I look forward to this event as I did with last year's open day. I'm thinking NX might have a special selection of vehicles on display to commemorate such a anniversary !

I'm guessing the lineup may be similar to the last - but with some new additions like the Streetdeck.:
Platinum E400MMC (Pensnett's own if/when the X10 gets its upgrade), Crimson E400MMC, Crimson Streetdeck, Volvo B7RLE, Enviro 200 - along with some preserved buses - like 4001, etc...
I enjoyed last time, despite the rain - presumably if it does happen (hopefully) - then I'd hope to see more publicity surrounding the upcoming of the event; for example Facebook posts, Twitter, an announcement on the NX Site, and, of course, posters inside some buses.
IIRC, the only mention of the open day - aside from the forum - was some posters on some of PN's buses? I'd like to see some advertisement on other garages vehicles - like WN or WB? Just to spread the word around the rest of the Black Country; i.e. to a wider audience.

Great question Busfan.
For those who are out of touch with any part of society under 50 (mental as well as physical age - and I'm betting there are some - look at the Brexit vote demographic) he's asking do you need to bring PPE footwear or are soft shoes like trainers and Converse Ok. As I say good question.
Bus Fan I once walked round a Midland Red garage in white trainers, 19 in flares and a Levi jacket - you can guess it was a v long time ago - however I am in a photo in this gear in one of Malcolm Keeley's books on this visit to the Midland Red depot..... v embarrassing!!

Exactly, it is a good question, I just find it very offensive that members of this forum are trying to make Busfan look a fool. Instead some people need to empathise, to be a member of this forum you need to be a lover of public transport, nothing more or less.
IMO some people owe him an apology. To me the rule is, treat people on here the same as you expect to be treated yourself.

Can you all please grow up a little, and keep this thread on topic? Thank you!

Crikey Mike K - I nearly choked on my coffee when I read that hahahaha. Talk about villages losing their idiots (sorry Karl and Pensnett driver - couldn't resist and I hope they are still serving up that wonderful Bathams over there!!)
I have just realised I've made a gross error quoting an imperial measurement - probably only applicable to Americans (I was tempted to say something disparaging but I won't to avoid upsetting overseas visitors) and the over 50s.
19in = 520 mm (or thereabouts)!! You are welcome to guess which Midland Red garage - but disclosure would inevitably give the identity of the photo away (we must all have Malcolm Keeley's books!) - if you don't know him you should meet him (at Wythall) he's a great guy.
I've only got the one Malcom Keeley book, the WMPTE one from around 1985/1986, so it wont be there surely.

I don't come on here to read your political views, this is a bus forum, i'm not interested in your political views.
No political view has been stated - it is your presumption that a remark about any implied stereotype about Americans is stating a political view - it's not. In the same way as Busfan 94 has not anywhere displayed illiteracy but some people's sensibilities have been somehow been pricked by him.
The picture is in a Midland Red book - that WMPTE book is excellent btw. Lots of pics by t w moore who posts in the Coventry bit.
Anyhooooo - back upon topic - is anyone going to the Pensnett open day? Any news on what's going to be on display?
I personally hope to be there at the open day. I think the recruitment stand being there as well is a good idea and the last open day was a good event. Will their be a shuttle bus to the garage ? I heard a Streetdeck might do the honours this year round.
I kind of hope to see (This is being hopefully optimistic) every bus type at NX. Something not to dissimilar to the banner photo of this site. We often forget just how varied of a fleet NX have here in the West Midlands.
As for the main attraction. I firmly believe Geminis should be the main attraction ! ;) :P A red/ White, Crimson & a 11 Branded Gemini should be a located at the gate to give a positive impression of the company !

I would like to go to Pensnett. Do they still have the line of Withdrawn veichels?, as I might go inside them and take a look I know at Walsall's they did it's on YouTube. I would also like to visit BC, PB, AG, YW, BY and CV and if you can still visit Lea Hall. Also how would I get to Pensnett from Darlaston and I plan to go away a couple of days after the open day.

The number of withdrawn vehicles at Pensnett has dropped significantly, think there maybe the a few Mercs and Presidents there, but can't tell you 100%.
As for travel, would go on something like the Network West Midlands website and go to the journey planner. No buses actually use the trading estate on a Saturday, but the 205 service from Dudley will drop you close to the Trading Estate entrance.

There are approx 15 vehicles at PN. 1x B10L, 2 x Mercs, Tridents & Presidents. You will not be allowed to go near them & especially not inside them even on the open day. The reserve fleet yard will abstractly off limits, although you can view them for the perimeter fence at the top & bottom of the yard.
I believe Lea Hall may be empty.

Lea Hall is in use by someone I believe as I have seen the shutters up and big stillages stacked up inside the garage, when I have passed on the inbound 14 at the island there

Some people were allowed to go and have a look at the withdrawn vehicles (whilst being escorted by NX staff) at the last Pensnett Open Day. I've not seen the video myself, but the person could perhaps be part of that group? I was lucky enough to be part of the small group who were escorted around the withdrawn vehicles to take photos.

The garage was sold to a textile recycling company. For a while after NX were storing a load of buses in the back yard & a few in the bottom end of the depot building (pits end) that had been separated off. NX were storing B10L's & Scania bendi's in dry storage. Obviously those have been scrapped & moved to Miller St respectively. As far as I am aware LH is empty of buses, the reserve fleet is massively reduced these days

One thing that struck me, Pensnett operate routes in the area previously covered by the ex Midland Red black country garages, especially Stourbridge, Hartshill and Dudley. It would be good for some preserved Midland Red buses to be there - I'm guessing NXWM may still operate some of the routes with their original numbers??

Yes, talk about kids with a new toy! Would also like to know who managed to start up one of the deckers on display while i was there. Also some people got off one bus with newly issued daysavers!!
Anyway could only stop an hour and a half but thoroughly enjoyed myself. greeted when i arrived with the site of 6600 and a selection of other vintage buses, had a good look around and then went round the one corner and omg, there it was, The Cup Cake Stall mmmmm.
Came away with a DVD, selection of cup cakes and an NE mug and pens.
Thanks to the organising committee for an enjoyable experience.
Just waiting for the shuttle back to Dudley now!

That's ok then, they just looked the length of a daysaver!
@karl724223 would be nice to know how much was raised for the charity at the end of the day, certainly the bus wash rides were going well when I was there.
Had a fantastic couple of hours there today! Really enjoyed myself and hope there will be another one soon
I'd have to admit, I have thoroughly enjoyed my day at Pensnett; certainly beats last year's by a long shot, imo. At least the weather held up! :P
I'm truly impressed with the organisation put into this; despite a few mishaps which occurred throughout the day, but I'm sure the actual event more than made up for them. On the contrary, I agree with Westy, though, the horns were getting a tad annoying. I didn't help that there was an ORCHESTRA of buses doing it all at the same time. (with the odd bandit alarm thrown into the mix). Of course with any of these events, I always feel a sense of regret as to what else I could've explored. Looking back at my camera roll, I have a copious amount of photos of odd displays on 5514 (including the 16 and 101 that yours truly had set ;) ) - as well a minimal amount of other buses, (sadly) excluding the preserved ones near the back of the yard.
(TL;DR) Overall, I absolutely enjoyed myself, to say the least! Ilm glad I'm not the only one who's hoping for a next open day.
Like others on the forum, I quite liked the event. The number of stalls that were set out this time round were a marked improvement on the last Open Day and the cup cake stand was a "icing" on the cake ;D
Was kind of hoping of for a AG Gemini to be there although seeing as I catch them daily, I can look past that. I also found the constant horn noises to be a strain on my audible sense. I can't be the only person who thinks the singles & deckers were parked a tad too close to each other given how much room was left in front of the singles.
Another thing which I found to be positive was the presence of the training vehicle. I spoke to a few managers who were kind enough to answer questions and I was given a fair bit of info.
I found myself inside for a bit deciphering the driver duty sheet.
Overall, can't complain. Kind of wish their was more variety in terms of NX buses being there but my only regret was not sitting in the cab of the B5 as that was constantly "in use".
Interesting how the little darlings managed to work out how to set the destinations!
A Wolves driver tried to explain at their open day but it lost me!
The constant horns and alarms at the previous event put me off
Also I was busy

I saw a video of the last one and it did seem a little annoying. I did plan to come down to this one but I managed to oversleep so I had to head straight to the West Brom match. Maybe next time though!

Was that in the main building, where the loos were?
There was a chaplain guy in there at one point, talking to some guy in a wheelchair.
Was that information on a noticeboard by the way, opposite the display that explained the history of the garage?
Surely that information should have been moved for the day, especially as that building housed the only toilets available?
Anyone could've had that information as they went through to the loo!
I was probably not the only one who had a look at that board, as I went to the loo, the only difference was I never took a note of the information.
I couldn't even tell you what was on that board!
By the way, talking about restricted areas, I presume as long as we stayed the one side of the fence near the one gate, we were ok taking pictures of the withdrawn buses, as there was no one there official stopping us, in other words you stayed by the cars.

I enjoyed myself yesterday, and what karl has said about someone stealing a VCR and writing down peoples details has annoyed me that someone would do that I know there's being a bus enthusiast but to the point of stealing and breaching the data protection act for a hobby is insane!!!
Whoever it is need to hand themself in and if this discourages more open days I will not be happy! How the reckless actions of one individual would destroy the happiness of the many normal bus enthusiasts.
Sorry for the rant but when I was there everyone was enjoying themselves

Well said! It's really disappointing that someone has gone too far on what was a lovely day, especially when the garage didn't have to open their doors to the public at all.
Really hope whoever it was writing down driver info comes forward, and same for the missing vcr.

I'd be extremely surprised if the theft of said vcr was down to an enthusiast. Without wanting to be too unkind, several of the clientelle attending didn't appear to be enthusiasts of anything other than taxpayers money and their ratty, feral tax credits, er..sorry i mean children (one of whom is probably watching Power Rangers on the vcr right now.)
As for the drivers' info, which i daresay was down to an "enthusiast", sadly only NX can be blamed for this. If it is a breach of data protection, it has been caused purely by information which is not meant for the public being on display in unrestricted areas. (The fact that some saddo would want to know drivers' details is a bit creepy to say the least, however.)
On a more positive note, i greatly enjoyed the day myself. It was good to see a few familiar faces and great to attend another well-organised event. From what i saw other people had a good time too. Thanks must also go to the depot staff who were very friendly and helpful.
I've mentioned on here before that I occasionally catch the morning bus to Wednesbury Parkway with a woman who works on the same estate as me, whose other half works at PB on the Suttons.
I mentioned to her about the open day, whether her hubby was likely to be going to Pensnett either privately or for work purposes & she wasn't sure.
I can foresee her response, on her hubby's behalf, when I tell her next time I see her & frankly I wouldn't blame her & him!

Sir, I must admit I had a chuckle at this! The VCR isn't a video recorder. It's a Vehicle Condition Report - a piece of paper! 😂

No worries fella. Actually there is a VHS recorder on the Tridents. Behind a panel under the stairs. Records the CCTV images. So you weren't that far off the mark 😛

Huh, I'd have thought they'd be recording to hard drives or something. Mind you, I guess a VHS tape is less prone to damage from moving as a hard drive, so it does make sense. Do they get collected every so often or are they just overwritten after a while?

You sometimes get the cctv bloke come on your bus as you pull onto the pumps to pull the tape off. Only seen this happen on Tridents.

You could walk it in around 10 minutes, it's around half a mile, but the 42 and 43 stop right outside if you don't fancy the walk. It's fairly flat ground, since the hill only really starts once you get past the garage.
To put in my two penny worth regarding the WB Open Day; if anyone is travelling from Birmingham or Wolverhampton, the Metro's a great shout.
The closest stop to the garage is West Bromwich (Lodge Road) - which, quoting Google Maps, takes approximately three minutes to walk. An adult single from the Birmingham City Zone stops (exc. Jewellery Quarter) is £4.20 / from Jewellery Quarter, it's £3.30.
Having said this, it most definitely would be cheaper by bus; even by going one stop from West Bromwich Central to Lodge Road, the fare costs a whopping £2.70! (Adult Single)
Though if you're like me, and are a holder of a Metro travelcard, I would definitely suggest taking advantage of the Midland Metro. I guess how you get there is up to you, though! ;)

Does anyone know what vehicles will be on display? I'm presuming most types of buses operated by WB will be there, which is great for me as I can get a ton of images of small details to use for repaints on the Omsi simulator, but I'll also be interested in any preserved vehicles that will be attending.
Also, if anyone's taking a preserved bus there, and will be passing through or close to Tipton, I wouldn't turn down a ride there. ;)

There are 2 train stations nearby - Spring Road Station and Acocks Green Station.
Spring Road Station is the closest of the two to the Garage, about a 4 minute walk away (and is just around the corner), Acocks Green Station is further away, about a 15 minute walk away on Yardley Road (or a very short journey on the 11).
Local bus services are:
Closest Stop outside the garage - 1, 31, 36, 11A, 11C and 96.
Closest Stop down by the shops - 37, 30 and 99.

Spring Road is round the corner. That's your best bet. The other two would be Acocks Green & Hall Green and then jump on the 11 which will get you there in about 5 mins. Tyseley is also near, but it'd still mean a walk.
But yeah I'd suggest Spring Road. Or you could just jump on one of those fine Geminis on the 31 from City and get dropped off outside the depot.

Spring Road is round the corner. That's your best bet. The other two would be Acocks Green & Hall Green and then jump on the 11 which will get you there in about 5 mins. Tyseley is also near, but it'd still mean a walk.

I do hope the 31 is solid Gemini on Saturday, lately there's been a mix of Gemini's and E200 MMC's on that and the 5. Not madly unusual though.
I might get the 11 from Perry Barr.

We have a problem getting the Metrobus an MoT at the moment because of the speed it is capable of!
3225 will hopefully be carrying passengers if the engine goes in on time.
Thanks for the info.
Hopefully will see 3225 carrying passengers on Saturday.
I've hears there is going to be a play bus at ag open day for all the kids of this forum

Neither of the heritage fleet will be fit for carrying passengers unfortunately. 3225 will not get the engine back in in time. 2957 will attend, but is unable to carry passengers

Wonder if wyhall will allow 2 of their buses to be used 4001 R1NEG &1 of the back loaders or midland classic R2NEG

I'd love 4001 to be on the 11, alongside ALX400's in 'normal' service. Would be a sight in the original livery.
Is there any word on if the vintage bus service will be running at all? I don't know if I should just head straight to the depot from my house or if I should head up to Ward End first.

At the moment we have sourced one vintage bus (an open top Leyland Olympian)
We are having a few problems getting some of the vehicles we want there, but one that will definitely be there is one the the latest additions to the fleet, that only arrived yesterday...FJ11 GMZ (no fleetnumber yet!) as it has already arrived at AG.
What times is the open topper going to be running thanks

They will both be in the garage. Can't promise one won't be on the pits
@Tony Will there be just the one 'vintage' bus then, the open top Olympian, or have you managed to source another vehicle to use? I'd rather not turn up in Kings Heath for it and then have to wait an extra hour if just the one bus is running.

Thanks for the quick response. It seems like my best plan is to get off the regular 11A in Kings Heath then, and then hop on another 11A as a worst case scenario.

Is it 4413 I'm thinking of then?

Did NX manage to get a second vehicle to run the service? The article on the website still shows the timetable for two buses running, so I'd presume so?

Unfortunately at 10:00 I was still sorting out a second bus. 2222 wasn't a bad substitute was it?
733 was being driven by someone else taking me to Aldridge to collect 4714, although when I got there they offered 2222 instead which came straight from the museum to do the 12:00
Just want to say a quick thank you to everyone involved in organising today's event. Had a fantastic time. Was great chatting to the stall holders and reminiscing over some of the old routes... and the birthday cake was lovely!

It was amazing, I left to go on the Olympian for a ride after a while so I missed the cake, but I guess that's good for my diet at least! I do regret missing the one at WB due to illness but I'm so glad that I made it out today.
Well done to the organisers for today's event, the programme was well worth the £3.
Tony, I had a good ride on BCT 2222 from AG to Kings Heath and back, much better than a VR.

The next event is likely to be a running day on the 10A route at Walsall on the 11th August. If it comes off we are hoping to run the service using 2957, 3225, 4601, 4453 and hopefully a surprise as well

That would be an excellent way of promoting the new service as well.
Any chance of a flyer leaflet that can be downloaded / shared, if this comes off?
Out of all of the open days i've been to, Acocks Green's latest definitely ranks highly - a good selection of buses on view, very well organised and fantastic to go on the open topper. Also a brilliant programme, well worth £3 - some of the photos are a blast from the past! I think everyone involved should give themselves a pat on the back. Really looking forward now to Walsall's running day and YW open day.

Would this be part of the heritage weekend/s - it tends to be free to visit but by appointment/in small-ish groups. Or could this be a full open day for people to have a wander round [to a certain extent] - I don't recall there ever being the latter since the garaged opened in 1986.

I applied online/by email I think (I can't quite remember to be honest!) for the September 2013 open day and visited on the Sunday. We were initially told that taking pictures was a no-no, but in the end our tour host/staff didn't seem to mind - so we took pictures of the inside of the garage!

I once went to PN on a Sunday and just photographed outside the gates, I managed to get some courage and asked if I could get a guided tour and I did ! I took quite a few photos and I'm quite thankful for it.
Is this specific to a date or can I just randomly apply to get a tour ? I quite like seeing photos of buses inside the garage and Sundays provide ample opportunity to do so. I can't seem to find any details regarding applying although I do remember sending an email regarding a tour/ look around and I didn't get a reply. I'll be sure to look into this.

On that 2013 visit (probably no more than a dozen of us) one lady insisted on finding out why 'her' bus always came late and making a big deal of it. It became a bit embarrassing really and I felt a little sorry for the staff, who were simply showing us around. Fingers crossed you don't get a 'moaner' on one of these small-group visits - if the open day operates in that style.

According to the timetable, the shuttle does stop by Yardley Wood Station.. It then loops back to Kings Heath where it heads to the Rugby Club from there. Looks like it'll be a circular service, from the looks of things.

If you're coming by train from Walsall, you'll have to walk from New Street to Snow Hill or Moor Street, then you want the train to Stratford-upon-Avon via Whitlocks End which runs every hour on a Sunday.
Quote from: 2206 on September 01, 2019, 06:50:36 PM

On a Sunday, that would probably be the better option, both the 2 and 3 run every half-hour, combining to offer a bus every 15 minutes between Birmingham (Carrs Lane) and Billesley. Journey time is 20 to 25 minutes.
Coming from city, you want the next stop after the fire station; the 2 stops on Yardley Wood Road directly opposite the main entrance to the rugby club / Billesley Common, while the 3 stops just around the corner on Trittiford Road.
Won't have to bother about Sunday now, as I'm currently off work with a neck problem!
