So, i had to make a journey with a few days notice today from Birmingham to Essex via London. Standard advance was £25.50, first class £34. I went for 1st class. Virgins service was good, warm lounge in Birmingham, and snacks and sandwiches provided on the way.

Then it was the abellio service from Liverpool Street, i didn't expect much as its a commuter service, but it consisted of plenty of footroom, that's it. Not even plug sockets, and the carpet is all patchy.

Looking to try EC next time between kings cross and Newcastle.
