Maybe I'm being stereotypically... But I have not been on a single bus where a NX driver has said " thankyou" or "your well ome". I think this reflects on NX drivers being miserable due to the fact that they have such tight running timetables, making them annoyed. For a top class company surely they should use manners. Manners cost nothing!
Diamond on the other hand are also a large company, but they manage to say" thankyou", and the majority of them will wait for you if they see you. Well they do on the 4H route anyway. This is the reason why I respect diamond very much. They are always looking happy, even if they are running late. They are a world class operator
Also hansons use manners, and will even ask how you are, and have a conversation with passengers whilst driving. This makes some peoples day, as the driver maybe the only person they speak too all day. The other day the driver was talking too the passengers about the nearest post office. I really do hope hansons make more of themselves in the future.
So NX get paid the most money, yet they look like they get paid minimum working wage. Just my opinion.
Sorry if this will cause any controversy, I hope it will stay on the forum though, as it would be interesting to hear people's thoughts.

I have been on plenty buses where the driver has acknowledged me and said thankyou, maybe you shouldn't through names as it is not all drivers.

Most drivers I come across will thank you back if you say it to them, even if you only hear it quietly through the assault screens.
There's a driver at PE who will say good morning to every passenger as they get on the bus, and will say thank you and have a nice day as they get off the bus, regardless of whether the passenger says anything at all (I'm sure others will know who I mean).

Some drivers from YW do.
And BC. And PB, PB ones are probably the most politest I've ever had! :)
I do have some drivers, not necessarily from BC or PB, from here and there who'd say it back. Of course, you'll have to say it loud enough for them to hear, ...and maybe without headphones in. Self experience. Go figure. ;) :P
P.S. I'd say, the only occasion that I wouldn't say thank you, is if the driver is late, or got me late to something like school, y'know? I mean, it's not like verbal abuse if you weren't to say something anyway, right? :-\
You haven't been on my bus then ;)
Even though some people don't say it to you, I always find it polite to say 'thank you' when they ask for a ticket. I always acknowledge people when they say thank you/morning etc
There are some drivers that don't say anything at all, but thats up to them
You should catch the 35 sometime, theres a regular driver whos always smiling, and he always thanks everyone and says goodbye when they get off even if they dont thank him. Most of the other drivers in south brum will also reply if you say good morning or thank you to them.
I'm with John on this one. I will always say thanks if someone asks for a ticket and will always say goodbye/thanks to anyone who is getting off and says thanks. The problem is it is a viscous circle as the public has the general perception of drivers that they are rude and do therefore not acknowledge them which in turn leads drivers to deem passengers as rude and not acknowledge them as they think why should I bother. As has been said, in reality, most drivers are top blokes who would acknowledge someone who spoke to them.
What you also have to realise is that we can't (or at least shouldn't) have a chat with someone whilst driving as if you have a DQM and they see you being distracted whilst you are driving then it will be a chat with the boss at the very least.
Unfortunately, there are some drivers who can be really miserable and refuse to say anything - it is like they are there just to drive. I know that because there are some miserable drivers in Wolverhampton, mostly are Asians, and they are -terrible- drivers - but that is another subject.
Good news, not all drivers are miserable! I have met a small number of Walsall drivers because I was travelling on the Walsall B6s and B10Ls a lot last year, therefore, these drivers started to recognise me every time I get on the bus. We started from acknowledging each other to having small conversations at the break. After that, it seems that we sort of "know" each other, every time I am in either Walsall or Wolverhampton bus stations, we acknowledge each other in person or on the bus and occasionally have small conversations during the breaks. I also have met two or three Wolverhampton drivers, they are uniquely nice compared to the other Wolverhampton drivers. That goes to show that drivers can be nice.
I agree with
@clayderman that Perry Barr drivers seem to be the most politest. Every time I wait for the X51 in Birmingham, I see passengers ask questions to the drivers on 907, they were happy to answer them.
I would say the PB would be at the top, Walsall being second, Wolverhampton being right at the bottom. I would like to get on the bus that the kind PE (PN) driver drives one day.
PB definitely got some polite drivers never had problems :)
My friend's sister whos on the 311/313 rota, she's fair & pleasant!
Isn't it just the point that all companys will have very good, polite drivers, but you will always get some that are not. As Esther Rantzen used to say, "That's Life"!!
There is a lady driver at Walsall whose hair colour may be a tribute to the late Walsall Corporation Transport. She is unfailingly polite and pleasant to her passengers.

To be fair Liam me and you both know there are nice drivers at WN several of them on Bilston but then yes there are some arseholes as well.
I was one of the arsehole drivers. I didn't have the time to be bothered between the scum and the genuine passengers. So I didn't say a word to anyone. Unless it was
@Mike K, I let him share my cab :-)
At the end of the day, the driver's job is to drive the bus. If I get a 'hello' or 'thank you', or any form of acknowledgement of my existence, I consider it a bonus. If I don't, I certainly won't lose any sleep over it. ;)
Personally, I'll always say 'thanks' to any driver as I get off the bus, as it's just polite. If a driver waits and lets me get on after seeing me hurry towards the bus, I even extend my thanks then!
But the way I see/hear some passengers' attitude towards drivers, I'm not surprised some of them choose not to interact with their passengers!
By the way, just to add some balance to this thread, there are certainly a fair few drivers at AG worthy of a commendation; in particular there's one fella who I sometimes see driving the 37, who always chirpily greets passengers as they board, and gives them a 'cheers mate' as they leave. And special mention to one other fella who drove the 37 last week, who made sure a lady with a pushchair was settled in before driving off.
One thing I don't understand is why people don't press the bell! It's there for a reason!
Most of the NX drivers I've come across have been very polite - treat people like you want to be treated and you will be treated well back - I can't comment on PE/WB drivers as I never use them. Only good experience is PB/AG/YW and to lesser extent WN - sometimes it's just not always audible due to the assault screen being in the way. Some of the YW/AG drivers have been excellent over the years I've been using them - certainly one young chap who I've seen around for a few years now always goes out of his way to say cheers or say hello. I agree about the PB drivers - used them a few times over the last few weeks and most have been very polite.
As has been said some drivers just prefer to drive the bus and focus on that - some passengers clearly lack any manners towards some of them so you can't blame them.

Less than an hour ago, I was on the 63 going to the university. A woman had stood at the front of the bus to get off without pressing the bell, and the driver drove past her intending stop. The driver asked "why didn't you press the bell, I can't let you off here" (slow moving traffic). Her response was a stream of strong expletives until they got to the next stop. So yes, I can certainly understand the appeal in remaining silent.
I've encountered similar before, and why some passengers choose to be so abusive towards the driver when they're clearly in the wrong beggars belief. :(

I agree with this level of politeness 100% - from many times I've caught a bus to & from town, or wherever, the driver would usually wait a few seconds for passengers to 'settle', before pulling off. Speak for your AG drivers, but I've noticed this a lot recently from PB drivers, on the 16, or 101, my local routes. Not so much from WB drivers, though, I can't tell when if they're *trying to* zoom off, because the 74/75 always seem to be stuck in a gridlock. ;) lol

This happened to me, twice. On both occasions, I'd press the bell. Although, both times it had drove past my intending stop. Funnily enough, both times were also on the 101. :P - They were different drivers, one male, the other, female. But they were both very polite, and pointed out if I wanted the next stop after, which was fine. ;) (Both stops in walking distance.)

And then on the other hand there are many polite drivers at Park Lane. It seems everyone thinks Park Lane is a garage full of grumpy drivers ::) rant over lol
A thank you is nice to receive, but I don't expect it from NX drivers, which is disappointing - in my personal opinion. I say thank you for driving me to my destination, you say thank you for paying for the service, but like I said, that's just what I think. I usually say thank you to the LM train conductors (only when I get off on platform 3 at Smethwick Galton Bridge) and receive a thank you back, which is nice
there are some ignorant berks, but then again some really nice helpful drivers at park lane. its a thankless job though nowadays.
@NathanI've met some cheery WN drivers before now - had one near the start of the year who wished me a happy afternoon at the Wolves game and laughed when I said probably won't win! Known a few others, particularly on the 27/27A before now who are quite cheery and polite. Saw a very nice move by a 2 driver in December who stopped to wait up for a lady running down the road for the bus; the YW 6 drivers are quite good at stopping in a morning for running passengers despite it being a regular service.
Speaking for PE, i have found that 99.9% of drivers are polite and helpful, you will always get that 0.1% and don't forget its not just NE, most bus companies are the same.

Oh and every single passenger isn't an ignorant Berk themselves? I see this swaying into a very one way argument. Frankly I find it laughable that you lot are because someone didn't say thanks. Who really, truly cares? You've got the place you wanted to go and that's it. Do you thank your car every time you get out of it at your destination? Or thank yourself for that matter? Personally (I've vague memories I've said this before... Is this topic a duplicate?) I think its these little petty things which make you blind to the bigger picture. I think you're asking for too much. That poor driver has to sit there and thank over 600 people a day for using a bus? (Regardless of the fact that, in that group, they've also thanked scumbags for travelling for free...) Put it in context guys.
don't forget the passengers with ear phones in, looking at their phones (don't even look at the driver) and just throw the money in the cash vault.......

But to be fair, in these days of huge garages employing hundreds of drivers I bet a lot of drivers don't know each other from Adam. Or Ahmed. I work in an office that employs several hundred people and I don't say hello to everyone as I don't have a clue who half of them are.
It's unrealistic to expect thanks and gratitude from every driver. When I lived on the 50 route and used it every weekday for 7 years to and from work, I often wanted to punch many of my fellow passengers in the face so I can imagine how drivers must have felt.
99.9% of NXWM drivers I've had have been significantly friendly

Ok, I agree about the scum things, how about they only say THankyou if the customer says thankyou
I'm with
@Matt and
@Liverpool Street, I say thanks to the driver when I get off the bus for getting me from A-B in one piece and always get a "cheers mate" or something along them lines, my two main routes the 120/126 have a mixture of good and bad customers so I would personally wait for the acknowledgment from passenger if I was up the front of a 5 tonne beast, and what's the driver thanking us for?? They've done all the hard work we should show them manners and respect..
quite simply, the youth need to grow a pair, society is a vast spectrum, the minority you'd avoid like the plague, some people have manners, some don't. big (insert watershed words here) deal. You should always look after the driver because the driver looks after you even if there isn't any communication, you've still been polite and grateful, no I don't want a gold star, its just what you should be taught as a kid and stick to forever. Not the best rant you ever did read but there you go
I have to say I don't expect any particular greeting when getting on a bus in Birmingham, but having said that when getting off and saying thank you to the driver, it is quite rare not to get a friendly response.
two examples of good customer service today
driver of 4808 on the 9 this morning when a passenger got on bus carrying a can of paint explaining calmly that the can needed to be in a bag and waiting while the man put it in his rucksack and the driver thanking him afterwards
driver of 4347 on the 241 when a bling man and his guide dog got on, asking the man where he wished to get off, waiting for him and the dog to be seated and settled before setting off and when he got to the stop pulling as close to the kerb as close as he possible could for the man to get off!

@Mike K you've made me spit my tea out!! Hahaha
I found a nice driver yesterday, 1665 went past my stop as I got too the corner, so carried on, well because the stops aren't too far apart, I started too run too the next stop, where he was waiting for me
I know it's not NX, but on a rare occasion, I do decide to get on the Diamond 16. Quite a while back, when the main allocation were Hybrid Versas, the driver offered to hold my *bottled* drink, when my hands were 'full'. Honestly, it was nothing, but the driver was very polite. Overall great journey, nonetheless. The Versas are very smooth...
There was one time a Diamond driver threatened me just because I photographed his bus, he in no way gave me any signals to say he didn't want the photo taken otherwise I wouldn't have and would have signaled back.
What I did next was wait for him to return, set my camera to video recording mode, made it look like I was taking a photo then recorded the whole conversation where he threatened the ram my camera up my nose, said "come on then" several times whilst going to get out of his cab but then decided to drive away while I was half on the platform. Needless to say Diamond weren't too pleased when I e-mailed them the video! I bet they would have been even less pleased if it had ended up in the hands of the media (but I'm not that mean!).
Every company has it's moody drivers, some are just having off days, some were just born miserable sods - I can name you all of Stagecoach Nuneaton's (not publically of course). One of our drivers at Nuneaton has pulled over to let a guy grab some beers from a local shop before. There is all sorts of various factors to it but also remember that the bigger the company, the more staff there are and therefore there is going to be a higher amount of moody drivers, whereas the smaller companies, particularly the family run ones, are going to be a closer knit team making them more motivated and of course, the moody ones would stand out a mile away and would more than likely be weeded out.
If drivers react like that, then they have something to hide!
They could be cheating the system for all Joe Public know!

I've been kindly asked in the past to delete a photo by a driver (not a local company but I won't name anything to protect his identity) who told me he was moonlighting and didn't want to be identified so I happily obliged and let him watch me delete it.
Some drivers do have stuff to hide, it's just a good thing for that Diamond driver that he didn't carry out his threat the first time round because there was a police car with 2 coppers inside parked literally just round the corner... If I had recorded it then, I would have shown the video to them instead.
It seems that pensnett have the miserablest drivers. Went on 4226, and he said thankyou. Maybe that's why I'm so stereotypical of NX not having manners.

If drivers react like that, then they have something to hide!

How clear was the photo by the way?
Could he have been identified from your photo?
(Still shouldnt have been moonlighting personally! What if someone else had spotted him!)
I once had a driver from an independent operator who's fleet included at the time orange Alexander bodied darts (who's recently had a PI) attack me because I took a picture of his dart. Reported it to the police in the city centre where this operator is based who claimed it was my fault for taking a photo of his dart in the first place.
when i was in wednsfield taking a photo of a B10 on the 89 the driver saw me get my camara and look at me the nodded at me but covered his eyes and he was total fine with that
What I don't like is if bus drivers see you running for the bus and drive off.
