A different sort of round trip, but from 26th April it will be possible to do a round trip of about 120 miles (60 each way) on a £4.20 daysaver, Stafford to Leamington spa ( I know you wouldn't actually want to do it!) but that works out at 3.5p per mile, I wonder if there are any bus journeys between two towns anywhere else in the country where it is possible to pay on the day and travel for less than 3.5p per mile

And they say bus travel is expensive. You couldn't drive there and back for that much could you?

I'd say that's possible with Arriva North East as well. I've done day trips from Durham to Carlisle, Berwick and Scarborough. Each of those is around 150+ miles per day for a simple there and back journey. Ticket costs £7.70 so comes in around the 4/5p mark. Of course, you could do a massive trip from Berwick right the way down to Scarborough or Whitby which would be a fair bit more distance wise, bringing the cost down to around that kind of level.

But  could you do the return journey, Berwick to Whitby/Scarborough in a day?

Stafford - Leamington is possible with an arrival in Leamington before midday

Working on the round figure of 40p per mile (which is how much my father was allowed to claim on travel expenses in one of his old jobs) to drive 120 miles it would cost £48

Depends on the car/fuel efficiency/driving style. £48 of fuel gets you from Wolverhampton to Cornwall and back

Provided you set off pretty early and didn't spend long at the destination, you could probably do it in a day. Certainly Middlesbrough or Durham up or down to Scarborough or Berwick is easily do-able. It's the links to Scarborough that stop relatively early and there are later buses from Berwick than to Berwick which would make it more difficult.

Not as I had planed it originally. But I had seen 4390 as I was leaving City on the 50, and chased it for a bit until I got a good picture of it in Hall Green. I was going to go to Harborne first and then to the Q.E., and then the rest of the trip in reverse to what I listed below. Still not bad not costing me a penny! (apart from food!)

997 - Home - Birmingham - 4326
50 - Birmingham - Kings Heath - 6125
11A - Kings Heath - Hall Green - 4031
6 - Hall green - Shirley - 1917
