Title: Diamond East Midlands (formerly Midland Classic)
Post by: bahumbug on May 14, 2012, 08:09:51 PM
Just going off your fleet list for Midland Classic - you have a section of: 'withdrawn vehicles are also believed to be owned'

Under which you list WDA 4T - Just to confirm they do or did own this vehicle - but it is now at Whytall Transport Museum - I took this photograph of it there - not the best - but it was stuck between two others :)

As far as I am aware, WDA 4T is now owned privately and has been for a while. She is just stored at Bammot. The owners plans to eventually restore it to WMPTE livery.

The 112 when I have done it in the daytime has been quite empty, not sure about peak times.

The X12 may be better for people who might want to go to Sutton From Burton, who would have to change in Lichfield otherwise.

The Central Buses new route 92 may go a different route from the 112/X12, so more people might use this as well

I've been on the 112 when its always been empty as well-surely people would just use the train from lichfield to brum or sutton

The remaining section of Arriva 112 between Lichfield and Sutton is being reduced in frequency from Monday, so there probably won't be three buses an hour on that stretch.

However, I cannot find details anywhere for the new Central Buses 92 or Midland Classic X12 and emails to both companies have as yet gone unanswered.

Can companies really expect passengers to use buses with no publicity or information? How long do they expect these routes to last?

With regards to the 92, this isn't due to start on the 28th April (Staffordshire's publicity is incorrect) hence why there is no publicity or information yet

The reduced frequency 112 wont last long itll be axed like before, has it been reduced to roughly 2hourly to allow for breakdowns? What with it being operated from Wednesfield and all that? Lol

I admit it's been close to two years now since I used to be in Sutton daily, however whenver I saw the 112 then it always had a fairly healthy load on the section heading into and out of Sutton from Lichfield/Burton. Between Birmingham & Sutton it was always pretty much empty. I always used to think at the time they should terminate it in Sutton and perhaps use the spare buses to increase the frequency. I appreciate it was mostly OAPs on board, but I believe there is capacity for Midland Classic & Central to operate between the two locations and potentially survive, especially with the 112s reduced frequency.

The 10.26 from Sutton did not turn up today. lots of people waiting for either the X12 or 92 expecting them to come, as they are both timetabled in Sutton.

Maybe both the X12 and 92 have not started yet, as the 92 is not starting yet as said on the C.B. thread.

They all had to get onto the 10.30 112, which was 15 minutes late itself and turned up at 10.45.
Title: Re: Midland Classic
Post by: Smethwickian on April 29, 2013, 05:07:28 PM
In response to my earlier query, Midland Classic finally emailed me today to state that the revised and extended X12 service 'wasn't starting yet' but gave no indication of when it would.

That would explain the passengers waiting for a bus that hasn't turned up!

If it's been registered, surely they have to operate it or land in hot water with the Traffic Commissioner?

Centro/Network West Midlands must clearly think both services - X12 and 92 - have been correctly registered otherwise why it have put the new info on all the relevant bus stops with today's starting date?

This is becoming a bit of a farce, surely?

I'm guessing its because neither firm got dispensation from the traffic commissioner to start any earlier (like way back when Arriva reduced its 112 in the first place from 29 April) because the 56-day registration period wasn't waived. If Central and Midland Classic are both straining at the leash to be first on the road and to grab passengers' attention, they can operate for free before the registration kicks in. At the bus stop in Sutton town centre wherte the timetable was put up prematurely by Centro, the stickers hastily applied afterwards give the 'official' start dates as per the VOSA registratons, so passengers will once again be confused if they see  buses they aren't expecting, running -  but free.

There certainly were a fair few of these for sale with Drew Wilson so if Midland Classic are prepared to get their cheque book out, it won't be the last...

The 813 also tried to gain passengers by competing with the Cliftonville Campville service of heartlands that didn't quite work out.
Still I don't think there's quite enough passengers to make it work.

You get one on the X12 most days and the other normally on the 21. Its abit strange having an E200 with leather seats and laminate flooring but there are worse buses out there and theyre a nice pair. Just need more umph for the A38.

Travelled on one on the X12 this week, no obvious lack of umph.
Had one ride on a decker on there a couple of years ago after an accident on the A38, not unusual, alas, caused disruption. If memory serves it was an ex London Trident.

One of the trade mags did a test on one of the E200s on account of them having AS-Tronic gearboxes as opposed to the normal Allison or Voith. The gearbox didn't come in for too much praise but the buses are capable of over 60mph according to the article.

But if the operator is losing money on it, why should they continue to run it? Arriva tried running Burton to Tamworth but that didn't last long.  If it is only carrying passes with a few fare payers which I suspect is probably the case, hardly worth continuing with it.  Train by far and away the quickest way between Burton and Tamworth.

I understand that but surely a route needs time to become established, 3 months is hardly a long time and they should advertise the route with offers etc.

I think they could link with the hospital which may give more usage.

I agree that this isn't a long time from a passenger perspective but if you are taking all of the commercial risk, three months is a long time!

Three months sounds ample time to assess whether it's commercially viable or not. The only way to tell is to try it.

If there's been patronage growth in that period you might keep at it, but if it's been flat for two of the three months it's probably not going to work and you're best to scale it back.

Any 'new' route takes a lot longer than three months to know if it is going to be viable. Most genuine 'new' routes as opposed to ones aimed at either taking existing passengers, or mostly replacing another route are generally tendered for the first year to give them chance to grow and become viable.

Nobody just changes their travelling habits just because a new route appears.

Yes, when people look for jobs, they have to be able to get there, so people along the 154 route can now apply for jobs at JLR, but may not have done before, that is why it takes so long for routes to build up.

Not enough people in Hednesford will see a bus with Wolverhampton on the front and think 'let's go to Wolverhampton for the day' to make the service financially viable.

Whereas Stafford, Penkridge, Wolverhampton already has established links, not just Arriva, but the train as well

Just seen a pic of it in Midland Classic livery, looks rather good. Although would have been even better in Stevensons livery...

Wonder why they bought it if there was likely to be a spare part issue?

Didn't WMPTE have a similar problem with a FODEN double decker they bought in the late 70's?

The engine has expired on the Spectra in a big way. The DLA has been purchased to donate its engine (and it's X441 not 438, that's the one at Arriva Burton!) but will run it in the short term. So don't worry, it's in good hands. Shows as a warning that the purchase price of a bus for preservation is most certainly the cheap part!

71 and 72 both withdrawn for scrap.

The problem with the few Foden-NCs built was that Foden inexplicably went for an Allison gearbox and that was its Achilles heel. Parts were difficult to get and very expensive. Had Foden gone for the more conventional five-speed semi auto it could have been much different, as long as they were kept away from the likes of the idiot on here who thinks that a semi is driven the same as a full auto.

Parts for a Spectra's chassis are likely to be easy to come by as there are plenty of DB250s coming out of service and littering scrapyards. Body parts may be another matter.

Was that the last Gardner engined single decker bus in normal service?  :(
Title: Re: Midland Classic
Post by: James on December 30, 2015, 10:58:45 PM
Possibly. Wasn't exactly in normal service though. It did do 2 hours on the Lichfield local services a few weeks back when there was a problem with the Enviro. That will have been the last thing it did.

TOJ lives though and has just had a partial engine rebuild so will still be out on occasions next year.

They may well have done on the town services, but it might also just be another cost cutting exercise designed to reduce Arriva Midlands operating costs by removing the requirement for a depot in Burton & the associated overheads, transferring as many Burton services in to other Arriva depots, whilst only sacrificing the town services (which may now be less profitable due to successful competition from Midland Classic). As an added bonus it may free up some current Burton vehicles for cascade / replacing older vehicles due to reduced requirements & savings on engineering spares etc

How good are Burton's vehicles compared to Cannock's?

Would they transfer straight to Cannock or would they transfer elsewhere & Cannock gets inferior 'cheaper' vehicles?

Title: Re: Midland Classic
Post by: Dylanbusboy45 on July 04, 2016, 03:43:20 PM
I would have thought they will use the arriva buses at the start but gradually phase them out with new/second hand buses so they may just have the midland classic logos on the arriva livery. As for the buses themselves, I don't think midland classic will want the cadets/commanders but I think they will keep the versas and buy more favoured buses like Scanias or Optares second hand/new to replace the cadets/commanders. I think they may keep the DAF DB250s for mechanical parts to keep R2NEG going strong.

All of this is just my opinion so I may be wrong but this is what I would say @Solo1

I presume they have overlooked the 1, which becomes 401 according to Derbyshire.

Would you really expect the local paper to be accurate..? Yep, the 1's to Uttoxeter will become 401 but there will still be short workings I believe Burton to Tutbury numbered 1.

I presume it was a cut and paste from the update on the Staffordshire website which confirms what you say about the 1/401.
;
The withdrawn 402Xs were positioning journeys which I presume will now be 401s - or are they opening an outstation?

The Sutton - Lichfield part of the X12 only gets Scania L94UB and Enviro 200, its rare for anything else to be on it.

Yes I would agree that part of the X12 is nearly always Scanias and E200s but most other routes seem
to get anything

The 4 new Metrocities entered service on the 2 today. They are:
6 YJ66AOY
7 YJ66AOZ
8 YJ66APF
9 YJ66APK

A few observations although I wouldn't say there is route allocations:
55 (Stevensons Scania)/110 (ex Arriva 3710) on the X12
41 (R2NEG) on the 21
Ex Arriva Commanders seemed to be spread out amongst most routes

A visit to Burton on Wednesday produced in 2.5 hrs the majority of the fleet including BV55 UCU in full fleet livery with fleet no 56.
It seems the ex Arriva depot at Wetmore Road is being used for vehicles coming in for servcing a this was fairly busy with the Midland Classic depot only had 2 deckers on site & 1 single decker on the ramps.

I was also there on Wednesday - TFA13 was on slightly late 14.55 X12 from Burton, presumably for schools use after arrival.
;
Buses were also parked on the park behind the Octagon Centre, which I hadn't seen used recently, while  one bus did a three point turn in the entrance to the car pak in New Street.

Was in Burton for a few hours today. Metrocitys seem to cover most Sunday services and Enviro 200 1-JB14MCL was out too on the 812. Loaned Metrocity 212-YJ16DAA still at Midland Classic. It was on the 401 today.

Allocations for today were:
2E-Metrocity 5 YJ16DXU (normally used in Lichfield on Mon-Sat)
8-Metrocitys 8/9 YJ66APF/APK
401-Metrocity 212 YJ16DDA (on loan)
812-Enviro 200 1 JB14MCL

Didn't see the 21E or X39

Any one heard what is happening to the ex Arriva DAF Commanders that were up for sale on e-bay? Caught a glimpse of one the other day in Burton obviously in service as it had a good load.  Also saw a Enviro 200 in a red livery with Midland Classic stickers. Only caught part of the reg which was YX09 any news on that?

There are two,

32 - YX09FMP
33 - YX09FLN

The Dennis Falcon fleet no 12 should be moved to the 'still owned' part of the fleet list as it has been out of use for some time with engine trouble. It is currently being restored, see Project Falcon on Facebook.

The bush telegraph suggests that Julian Peddle (Centrebus / Midland Classic) has acquired 10, 12 plate, E200s through Manheim auctions in Coventry. The vehicles were new to First London but passed to Tower Transit when First disposed of its London operations.

YX12 AYZ and YX12 DJE are currently at the Midland Repair Centre, Derby, for work and are thought to be for Midland Classic. Time will no doubt tell.

Just thinking aloud.... Possibility of setting up an outstation in a depot previously vacated or using space in another operators yard with spare capacity...

Operating tendered service 53 from the Perry Barr or Hockley area would work well and would fit with timetables for X11, JL1 and a central base for rail replacement work.

Speaking as a 'armchair expert', I was surprised they'd come down that far from Burton in the first place!

I looked at the operators licesnce as well from DTS.
They currently have 6 buses on there.
They currently use:
- 2 on the 11C.
- 2 on the 11A.
- 1 on the 72.
- 1 on the 966 (Monday only).
Total of 6.
So even though that is true, they don't appear to have enough buses on that operators licence to operate it on top of what they already have.
I'm sure Travel Express had an extension to there operators lisence not long before winning the 303 as well.
Social, one of the related operators, would have enough though, though they would need more buses and drivers to operate it (they only seem to have one driver now (its the the same driver everyday) and one bus (SK51AYC) now.

If you are referring to the destination displays, it is Arial black.  It is exactly the same as what Arriva Shrewsbury use.  If you are trying to get it in Helen, it isn't in the standard drop down font list. Instead you have to:

Click the little box on the left hand side of the standard font drop down box for the route number font (the one under the green and purple T's)

A menu will appear where you can select what type of font you want (these are standard fonts that you'd find in Microsoft Word e.t.c)

Click Arial where you can specify what style of Arial you'd like.  This is where you click black.

You can select what size you want here, or you can alter it on the main screen.

Hope this helps!

Probably only of academic interest now, but not of course mentioned there is a new Swadlincote town service numbered 20 registered in last weeks N&P presumably replacing  routes 4 and 8 which will terminate at Swad according to Derbyshire timetable library.

Midland Classic gained six former Metroline Presidents towards the end of July/start of August.

101 - LK04 NNE
102 - LK04 NNF
103 - LK04 NNL
104 - LK54 FWL
105 - LK54 FWO
106 - LK54 FWR

They've only entered service from last week, I believe. Managed to capture 105 under the railway arches in Tamworth today.

Were the city services 31/2 in a previous incarnation?

As of the 19th of April, a new service 12E will be introduced between Lichfield & Burton which will bring new early morning & late night links to the area (The last trip off Lichfield is 2220). This service is semi-fast and misses out the villages of Kings Bromley & Yoxall! I'd imagine these journies are funded by the council?

Unlikely to be council-funded, as Staffordshire County Council withdrew funding for evening and Sunday routes well before the pandemic. The new early and late 12E journeys seem to tie in with potential 6am starts and 10pm finishes for workers in the various Fradley Park warehouses and distribution depots, and positioning the vehicle to/from Burton, so they're possibly commercial. If there were developer or employer funding it would probably be mentioned somewhere.

What I absolutely love about Midland Classic is they aren't afraid to experiment and test new vehicle types away from standard fleet stock. These Irizars are a perfect example and James has really flown the flag for the smaller independent operators. If you look at similar sized operators and how they run any old stock just to run services, it just shows how easy James makes it look (although logistically and financially it isn't!).

All that aside, anyone who is prepared to run the prototype Metrobus TOJ592S will always get my vote!!!!

The fact that it's not on the website will probably mean that it is closed door and not available to the general public.

It probably leaves them exactly where they were, in the Centrebus Group in the case of D&G and Chaserider and in the ownership of Mr Brown in the case of Select.

Tamworth run the 25 Ward End - Erdington and 600 Erdington Circular. As well as a few journeys on the 94 that come off the 25.
Wonder if these would move to Tividale and they will run the 76/A from Burton like the current MC 20 which runs in Tamworth. The 15/16S/X16 and 35 in Staffordshire are all proposed to be withdrawn.

Post August the only route Tamworth will run in the Tamworth area will be the 76/A and Midland Classic (Or Diamond East Midlandss soon) do already run into the Tamworth area from Burton on the 20.
I think some years ago Diamond closed Long Arce in Nechells and consolidated it into Tividale and Redditch, so maybe they'd do the same with Tamworth & Burton.

Tamworth is part of Staffordshire, as is the Midland Classic depot (30mins away from Tamworth).

As the Tamworth "depot" is an outstation of Tividale and from what I understand, a yard with minimal facilities, it may make sense to operate its services out of the Burton depot.

There's a *rumour* around about another acquisition more local to the current Tamworth depot which, if true, would render the Tamworth outstation obsolete.

Julian Peddle wasn't simply a Director, he owned shares in Midland Classic as he still does with Select Bus & Centrebus Group (owners of D&G & Chaserider) and there have been close ties / links / overlap with his various shareholdings in the past in different ways. There also appears to be close ties between Julian Peddle & Arriva, which incidentally Midland Classic originated from. I'm not suggesting anything will change with the remainder of his shareholdings now Midland Classic has been sold, but neither do I believe that JP's bus operator shareholdings all worked completely independent of one another.

IIRC Select Bus for example have expanded a number of times in recent years by taking over D&G's Stafford area services & subsequently Chaserider's Stafford Town Service, Select Bus aren't owned by Centrebus Group (owners of D&G & Chaserider) but they do have the common link via JP being a shareholder in both, coincidence....

Quote from: winston on August 04, 2022, 12:01:49 PMJulian Peddle wasn't simply a Director, he owned shares in Midland Classic as he still does with Select Bus & Centrebus Group (owners of D&G & Chaserider) and there have been close ties / links / overlap with his various shareholdings in the past in different ways.

There was far less of an input at MC, merely a (minority) financial one and nothing more.

Centrebus Group including Centrebus, High Peak, D&G and Chaserider are a different kettle of fish. Whereas at Select the situation more resembles MC.

So I repeat, absolutely no consequence for other businesses. Suggestions by other posters that infer otherwise are just unhelpful speculation at the least.

I get the feeling that a number of these buses will get sold on rather quickly after the full takeover due to most of them being none standard. If the cuts to Manchester are as big as they are saying and if Diamond don't win franchises up there, I can see a lot of Streetlites and Streetdecks coming into Burton to take over.

I thought some of the posts from "DJ" and "Andy41" over the last 2/3 days were a bit too sarcastic for this site where, on the whole, we respect one another's views even if we don't always agree with them.

Also won are some Derbyshire contracts which start on Monday:

3 of the Scania Irizar i3's have left the fleet and returned to Reading buses. These being 30997, 998 and 999.

30913 is the first of the ex Midland Classic fleet to be repainted. 31428 seems to be next in line.

Route 32 on weekdays is now run by Diamond West Midlands and also seems to be the 20 and X11.

Makes sense to run 20 from Tamworth. As the two return trips on X11 begin / end in Birmingham that avoids dead mileage, they appear to be Redditch operated and have 50 trips on the duty too.

Sadly it looks like the Boots X11 will cease, again. This will take effect 7th May. Not sure if it's low usage or Boots have cut the funding. Shame to see the route lost but I do think that it's a shame that more wasn't done with the route to try and get normal people onboard.

Just when you think that Diamond can't be any more anti-passenger, they have decided to withdraw themselves from The Knot, multi operator ticket scheme as of the 19th January. What an absolute joke. I am often quite supportive of Diamond where I can be but at a time when the rest of the industry is trying to get more passengers onboard, in swoops Diamond Midlands to give everyone a kick in the teeth.

To continue to accept Knot tickets, would impact on the commercial viability of our services in the Staffordshire area.
Therefore we have taken the decision to leave the Knot scheme.

What a wonderful thing for Diamond to do. I know Staffordshire aren't the most 'pro bus' authority but surely as it's one of the only good things to happen in the area, they should support it.

If Staffordshire Council has any sense, they will make it a requirement of tenders. That will soon change things.

Please bare in mind the reasoning behind the decision, while I agree it seems a backwards step the main reason stated by Diamond seems to be the viability of the commercial network. Perhaps the process of claiming money back from the council for acceptance is too slow. Making it a condition of tenders would not make any difference to Diamond's commercial network in my opinion.

Making it a condition of tenders would kind of force Diamond to accept it more because of the contracts that they have.

For Diamond, of all operators, to claim that a low usage multi operator ticket is going to cripple the commercial network is laughable. Especially when cowboys such as Select accept the ticket, it really can't be that bad.

If the multi operator ticket was worth retaining financially, they wouldn't be withdrawing from the scheme.

No doubt the decision is based around the reimbursement they receive no longer covering their operating costs.

Presumably, this is the reason why 33260, 40840 & 40843 have stopped off at Burton on loan whilst en route to Tividale. Burton are awaiting 31419, 31420 & 31421 from Kidderminster. These will be released in the coming days once the extra 13 plate Streetlites enter service at Kiddi.

I assume Burton will get all 4 x E200's from Kidderminster (31416 too).

30903 and 30904 appear to still be in service. 31416, 31419 and 31420 have arrived at Burton but not yet entered service.

30903 & 30904 were withdrawn & moved to Tividale depot, but hastily re-instated & returned to Burton due to the condition the Kidderminster E200's were received in.

31419 & 31420 have both been in service for one day at Burton. They've all been off the road the road since....

Those e200s are in a dreadful condition I'm not surprised. 31420 I sampled on the 142 and if you think that's doing above 30mph.

Looking at bustimes 31420 tracked on a 8 from Swadlincote this morning but only lasted as far as Burton!

31416 looks to been out most of the day.
