Every route Nottingham City Transport is route branded and yet they can put the correct branded buses on the correct routes 99% of the time.

So how can they do it.
It's not how the branded buses but how the generic buses are allocated. Virtually all double deck routes have peak buses.
Morning peak buses are usually branded so that if a branded bus breaks down during the day this bus is used as a substitute. If the defective bus is fixed its used for the pm peak if not it's dead anyway.
Routes with small allocations such the brand new Bridgeford buses are branded by corridor not route with route diagram for all routes in the bus.
Indeed on Boxing Day when a few routes were crosslinked suffient generic buses were available in same way the ingenious link on the same day in Coventry 6A and 3A used all blue Enviros instead of branded E200s so it proves NX can do it!
By using peak buses to work one journey then move onto another route it allows buses to step back a departure maintaining the Clock face headway rather NXC who have no peak buses and resort to widening the headway.
University bus 4 doesnt run in the holiday and the 34 is vastly reduced, so the buses are parked up but at 9 years they are the oldest double deckers in the fleet.
What a mine of information and inspiration Bustimes can be!
NCT's fleet is smaller than NX's

I think you will find National Express are also around the 99% mark with route branding on correct routes. After all even if 15 buses are wrongly allocated they are still 99% correct.

Both times I have been in Nottingham in January I saw a bus not on allocated route.

Coventry does have peak boards!

It is smaller but unlike National Express the vast majority of routes are colour coded. I was sitting opposite two students on a bus in Nottingham who were talking about the different coloured buses. One then said to other "I come from Redditch where we have a bus company called Diamond who are cr*p"!

I accept your point about fuel efficiency as if all Coventry routes were branded to same extent you would have old less fuel efficient buses out on Sunday unless all the modern buses are generic.
Efficient use of buses means certain school workings are likely to use branded buses in the way the afternoon 9S in Coventry is 20 branded bus that comes from Crosspoint.
Having just passed an Arriva branded bus on the wrong route on the Runcorn Busway I appreciate this an exceptional circumstance where providing residents of Halton with a bus service at all is the priority. Haltons fleet is still locked up in the garage with a few visible in the secure yard outside.
