Title: Withdrawn Merc's
Post by: Adam 404 on October 30, 2014, 04:28:17 PM
1558 and 1625 are both withdrawn. However, it looks like another bus that I have not identified has since been withdrawn.
Does anyone know what fleet number this is if of course it is withdrawn!

1558 & 1625 were both withdrawn during September along with 1680. Tony's fleetchanges bottom of the main site homepage confirms this. The fleet changes for October will more than likely be posted by mid next week,

1608 joined the withdrawn line at the end of October too, leaves 1548 as the only one in service in old Travel Coventry livery.

Winstons entry leads us to 1687 a non PSV being transferred to Coventry. What use will this have at Coventry depot?

The Coventry withdrawn Mercs, 1558,1563,1566,1569,1608,1625,1680 are parked out of service, as reported in this topic, at the the depot. Of these 1608,1680,1558, and 1625 are at the front of the depot and 1566,1569, and 1563 are  lined up at the rear.   1558 and 1625 are acting as a fence to seal the front depot from adjacent cleared ground where the Theartre One building has been demolished, they are sandwiched in so close together, one behind the other, it looks difficult when the time comes to prise them apart. Some of these buses have been out of service since Septemer 2014

Can I add..... 1625 of these withdrawn 0405's had covered 964,888K by March 2011, it could be  the highest milage bus among all the Coventry 0405s by the withdrawn date. Most of that milage was covered before it came to Coventry of course

1548, spent all its years at Coventry was our oldest bus   before withdrawal, had completed 840884K by March 20th 2011. Would anyone know the final milage of these buses..I did write to the GM at Coventry asking for the milage of 1548..but had no reply.

I probably won't get chance to update the main site until Thursday evening after tonight as I have a Private hire to do in the evening Tomorrow & Wednesday.

If anyone see a PB Omnicity in unusual places around the city centre that will be me!

So sales for scrap in March are 1478; 3605; 1597; 1650; 1694; 1558; 1625 & 1680

Noted the following 4 Merc's parked at the back of the depot yesterday:

1568
1616
1634
1656

Are these withdrawn?

Also noted the following still in service:

1579
1635
1659
1678
1703

1635 was towed away from Coventry yesterday. 1634 is currently at the back of Coventry garage being attached to a tow truck ready to be removed. Subsequently seen heading up Walsgrave Road presumably  en route to Yorkshire and a new life as a tin of beans.

That sounds rather terminal, in-fact 1610 was one of the tidier Merc's in later years. That small collection of withdrawn O405N's have been cleared.

Scrapyard pic of 1610, not looking its best now!

According to the Fleet list National Express gave me at the Coventry Open Day... The only Merc's left are 1570, 1571, 1572, 1579, 1591, 1594 and 1703. This means there are 47 Single Deckers in Coventry at the moment in service. This includes Bendibuses.

Four Mercs used today on 5 and 18/A.
A driver said he expected they would be used next week as more vehicles are required with University term Earlsdon peak hour shorts on 11U starting. Obviously it depends how quickly the ex Walsall Enviros enter service.

Think I am right in saying only the four remaining Mercs [at the time of writing] and any remaining Plaxton Presidents in the 4023-4124 number range carry matching fleet number & registrations, in the older style. It would appear all other vehicles are either stored/withdrawn, acting as driver trainers or preserved. There are no others in front-line active service as far as I can remember.

I'd actually forgotten about the earlier batch of Tridents 4125-4224 which have Y-prefix registrations - but are without the matching numbers.

On the flip side - there hasn't been too many withdrawals of buses carrying the later two-letter area code [followed by two numbers to represent the time period of issue] registrations. Fire victims 4336/41 are obvious ones (and 4355 at some point I assume) plus demonstrators that have moved on. Whether stored Scania's 6022-32 will ever see NX service again is debatable I suppose.

Sad to read of 1703s demise, it was one of 8 or 10 Mercs to be allocated to PE back in April of 2006 lasting a couple of years until they were transferred to CV, have to say 1703 was one of my favourites from the later batch!

Not sure if you noticed, but 1703 has 'END' on the rear display. I did get a photo, but I must have been standing in the worst possible position lol as I managed to get a tree branch and part of the fencing in the way.

1703 was a nice bus, NXC have been left with a pretty rough bunch of Mercs considering the ones that were withdrawn earlier this year (1610 springs to mind). Though I realise there are a number of reasons why withdrawals happen when they do.

@S570 i did get some footage of 1571 if you're interested

Saw it in another thread, love the 'whiny' sound some of the Mercs make.

1579 seems to have finished as I've been advised it's parked up and the coin volt has been removed. Seems like 1571 pottering around on the 1 (odd hour Chapelfields) is only one out after 1594 was briefly out on 5's earlier.

While on the 16A (4987) earlier, I seen 1591 through the garage door by the MOT Testing area with a red sticker. Must be the end! :(

The Mercs finished on November 6th, it was thier last day in Coventry. The drivers tell us that the last four are going to Pensett depot because of shortage of buses, they could be there until sometime in December.

I must come back to 1571 being at West Brom. a colleague travelled to West Brom to photograph the bus earlier this week and was told it was not in service that day. But it was there and working from the bus station on previous days he was informed. Anyone with more information pre my hopeful visit sometime next week to take photograps.

@t.w.moore It's at Pensnett. From what I understand, the ex CV Mercs have been allocated to the 205/297, so maybe try Russells Hall.

Pensnett Garage. Usually found on the 205 (Dudley-Kingswinford Via Russells Hall Hospital) or 297 (Gornal Wood-Merry Hill via Russells Hall Hospital). They seem to be on the 297 mostly though.

Sucess at Russell's Hall Hospital, photographed both the ex Coventry 0405N's, 1571 and 1591, working the  297 service to Gornel Wood, rode on 1571, despite the persistant rain. I had to smile when I photographed 1571 when it turned into Gornel bus station, the driver was covering his face, and then I got the proverbial upright finger to show his annoyance because I was photographing the bus, no hinderance to him, from behind the pavement railings. Then I walked over to the bus, and one irate passenger who got off the bus was raising his voice to the those who were boarding.  "I had to wait one hour an fifteen minutes for this bus." He then see me approaching the bus with my camera and he said. "Have you photographed this bus" And then repeated in a loud voice. "I had to wait one hour and fifteen minutes for this bus. I reckon he had given the driver some stick about how late the bus had been, the driver was no happy bunny I can tell you when I used my pass to board. Their had been a delay and I had waited over an hour for the bus to return from the hospital.., yes it was a good day. Then returning from Dudley to B'ham the 74 service Enviro broke down...

There were no 75 minutes gaps in the service today!

Tony, I and a number of other people waited over an hour for the bus to arrive at Gornel, but I am not complaining.

The time on my picture shows the clock on the  Zoar Methodist Chapel is 2.25pm as the bus turns into the bus station. The clock is working correctly.

The editor of Classic bus, Philip Lamb is preparing a piece on the withdrawn Mercs for the next edition
he asked me if the Coventry Mercs 1571/1591 were the last operational Mercs. I note two 1585 and 1603
in the fleet list at West Brom.  Are they operational? He would like me to tell him as soon as poss.
Could you tell me?

1585, 1607, 1695 and 1699 are all still in operation at West Bromwich Garage.

1571 on it's previous trip left at 13:24, 61 minutes previously, so several people had not been waiting 'over an hour'
