Title: Buses on TV
Post by: Trident 4609 on December 24, 2013, 09:14:29 PM
Just a bit of a light hearted topic :)

Just post here any buses you see in the background of television programmes (I believe there is a site dedicated to this sort of thing!)

I will start off :)

Last nightvi watched a drama on C4 last night called Raised By Wolves set and filmed in Wolverhampton and one of the shots was of a 1 branded B5LH

I've also seen Optare Solo's and B7RLE's on Emmerdale!

I watched a Keeping Up Appearances Episode a while back and 2465 appeared in the background :)

Also when Hustle filmed their last 3 series in Birmingham several Buses were in the background including Presidents and Enviros

I've been watching Keeping Up Appearances lately (quality), filmed in and around Coventry and Leamington/Kenilworth areas, but I have not seen a bus in the background yet.

An episode of Doctors a few years back (not that I watch it!) featured a scene inside a Green Bus single decker, could have been one of the Plaxton Verdes

Also remember watching 'Brum' when younger, there was an episode heavily featuring a WMT Metrobus. Also lots of buses going past in the background on all of the old episodes

1668 appeared on Sky News today.

They had a reporter at the QE for a news story. 1668 went past on the 48 in the background.

Brum! near the end credits - you can see a metrobus, and a liberator... Also, I think there might've been a President... Not sure.  ::)

Also has anyone noticed that Channel 4 ident in Blackpool in which two blackpool transport buses (A Trident and Solo) go past?

The Trident was in Line 14 Livery and the solo was in Line 5 Livery but these route liveries are now disappearing and most of Blackpool Transports Buses are now in Black and Yellow Livery with a Silver and Red/Pink Stripe only a small number of the buses still remain in their route liveries :)

Also, on an old QI episode shown on Dave, Stephen Fry/Alan Davis, Jeremy Clarkson and someone else are talking about Birmingham (Slagging it off like usual), and the picture behind the panel is a MK1 Metrobus (WMT Red Stripe Livery) on the 57A on Corporation Street

Another childhood programme: 'Me Too!'

Where Lothian buses, primarily Plaxton Presidents, are featured - disguised in the name: Riversea Buses
Although, quite frankly - If you watch the show the vinyl have been very poorly attached!

Other buses may include:
- Dennis Darts SLF - I think these do not have 'Riversea' Logos attached...
- Volvo Olympian (Alexander Royale) - in the Old livery

That new program coming up about EYMS features EYMS :-)

The Route Masters - Running Londons Roads features some RMLs of First amongst others...

Although the later incarnation of Crossroads was filmed in Nottingham, occasionally a TWM Optare Solo was used. But with 'West Midlands' taken off the fleetname, showing just 'Travel'.
No idea why, everyone knew Kings Oak was supposed to be just outside Birmingham!

Yea considering kings oak was set just outside brum there weren't many west midlands or brummie accents in it lol that goes for both the original and later series. Anyone remember a character called mavis hooper from the original inthe early 80s? TTerrible attempt at a dodgy brummie accent lol

I remember watching the ITV News, a female reporter was reporting about something outside the Grand Theatre. I saw a Walsall B6 drove past, I was a bit sad to rewind and try to decipher which bus fleet number was it and I knew it was 333, because only Walsall B6s used to go down that road. It was S648 VOA, on 333.

Several years ago I filmed a travelcard advert driving an empty Metrobus around the 52 (now 952) loop at the terminus. The magic of television meant there was passengers on when the advert was finished.

I found it slightly odd that last week the 101 service number & destination were blurred out, yet the 11C was shown quite clearly. Possibly as it was a general shot rather than of people boarding the service?

I was very frustrated yesterday whilst travelling on the 11. Shortly after Bearwood we got to a bus stop with the Revenue Inspection team there. Four people at the back upstairs (who got off at Winson Green) started panicking as they didn't have tickets, but then the inspectors only seemed to step on the bus check about two passes and then got off! I was gutted.

A couple day ago, there was a rather interesting documentary on BBC1? I don't want to name the programme, but it did feature a NXWM Plaxton President going past, with the Transitional Logo's on. I think this was when most Presidents were still at BC?

Benefit Street is on Channel 4!  Seriously, what's the programme?

It weren't Benefits Street. I am quite ashamed to say this... But it was called the Naked Rambler.  - I think he was arrested one night in Birmingham, as he was in a car. As the on-screen annotation came up displaying 'Birmingham' the President drove past...

On tonight's Midlands Today there was a feature on Redditch with a few snippets of buses.

The item looked back at a 1970's promotional film for the town. In that film local broadcaster Peter Tomlinson was dressed up a bus driver working for "Reddibus" which of course was the Midland Red local identity at the time. He was seen on-board a Leyland National.

Then to bring things up to date, Peter Tomlinson and the reporter were both filmed on a modern day bus presumably Diamond Not sure what fleet number it was, but it was a Silver painted Wrights single decker with red seats inside.

They had a stagecoach solo a couple months back but gone back to the merc. Perhaps the solo broke down  ::)

On one of the Top Gear episodes/challenges where they buy 3 classic British sports cars, there's an NXWM Enviro400 operating on the Sutton Lines route as well as earlier in the challenge, there's a 448 bus in the background that goes past while trying to sort out a leak in Hammond's Lotus Elan, think it's a Merc, but i'm not 100% on that

Had another watch on the programme and realised it was in Dudley! You are correct, it was "*222 branded Enviro 200*"... I would guess the branded B5 Hybrid would be when they were at Wolverhampton, given that the documentary was filmed earlier this year or last year. To correct someone, it's one asterisk, not two. :)

3002 is the regular bus provided, but as a lot of filming is now at the Black Country Museum, you can quite often see their ex West Brom bus as in today's episode.
Especially in the first series, they filmed a lot across the road from where I work in the jewellery quarter. Seeing 3002 drive past was a regular thing. Our place even lent the BBC some items as props! 😃

@D10 I am afraid I have to agree, however, in the interest of keeping to the thread I would like to point out that the MCW Metrobus' were in pristine condition whenever they appeared on screen. No bus anywhere is in pristine condition when it is in service. Then again this was the time before Fare-Dodging youths that graffitied every flat surface... Good comedy, Good metrobus. End of...

More than happy to get the topic back on thread mate.

I think it is fair to say they would have supplied the best condition Metrobus to the BBC for filming purposes. In the same vein, there used to be a Atlantean in a heritage red livery to represent the old Huddersfield Corporation, that used to turn up regularly so this must have been deliberately supplied for filming.

Perhaps slightly off-topic because it is a film, but it was on telly last night. An early 60's British film called "A Kind of Loving" has been shown a few times on True Movies recently. Some of the scenes are inside the lower deck of a Guy Arab, some of which have the actual bus sound behind the dialogue. The shudder when the clutch is engaged, the gearbox whine and the blast of a Guy exhaust......wonderful!

The vehicle was N963 NAP, originally new to East Kent and which was with Chepstow Classic Buses around 2013.

Far too many lazy selfish inconsiderate motorists on the roads now. The excuses rolled out by the motorists in this video are quite frankly pathetic.

"it's a shortcut" - no, that's why there are restrictions!
"There's no other way through" - yes there is, go round the other way!
"Everybody else does it, I'm just following them" - if everybody else jumped of a cliff would you do the same?

And the thing is, so many people complain about bus services running late and say they 'can't wait to pass their driving test' but all they do is just contribute to the problem and make it worse!

If memory serves me correctly, that section of road (before it was even pedestrianised) has always had vehicle restrictions in place (since the ring road was made two way) so why is this only becoming a problem now?

@Stu  it was restricted when the public opened in whatever year it was. the problem has only got worse since tesco and new square opened. when new street was closed a few months ago for roadworks, the buses that used the road had to go round the ringway in both directions. the bus station was never gridlocked then and as soon as it reopened, the problems started up again.

we are fed up of it. the sooner those cameras come in the better. it's not fair for people who use the buses

I'm gonna guess it's causing problems for NX, Diamond ect. As drivers will be going over the 5hr30min limit.

What are you meant to do if you are stuck in gridlock? Are you allowed to unload passengers or not?

Must admit it was better than I expected. Transport related programmes can often be dreadfully patronising e.g. the programme about tube where everything is exaggerated. After all many people do mundane tasks and it showed the operating spectrum from death in service (Russian lady started service when RTs were still running) to disciplinary action. Obviously it didn't show much if anything to do about engineering.

I commend the Russian lady for her years and in service as well the rest of the crew (Its nicely knit family). I've noticed this to be a trend among the bus driving profession.

I just felt as though it somewhat focused too much on driver's personal lives as opposed to the running of the garage, how public money is spent or just how much work goes into keeping buses on time.

It was subtlely done but they showed you Go Ahead staff using their experience with local staff, trying to keep their buses on time so that big brother TfL can look at the information again as bald statistics without understanding local conditions. The  joys of franchised environment. Mind you this duplication of effort probably happens in the big groups as well in the commercial environment too.

Sorry to be pedantic, but there is no such thing as a 'Volvo B7RLE 2nd Generation'. Volvo B7RLE is just a bus chassis, you probably saw a Wright Eclipse 2, which is a later version of their Wright Eclipse Urban, both of which are built on the Volvo B7RLE chassis.

Agree. I caught am old episode last week, can't believe I used to love that show! If I remember the last couple of series were filmed in Nottingham rather than Birmingham as Central TV moved it to their then newish studios there, so any buses in view will be different in those series!

The footage showed the bus driver, who is a regular on the Harborne rota, speaking with emergency services. He had pulled in at the Woodgate GP surgery on Stevens Avenue in Woodgate Valley so the chap could receive emergency treatment before ambulance crews arrived. The patient was rushed to QE Hospital but unfortunately could not be resuscitated.

Platinum 6995 (with its Orange route branding !) was clearly visible for about 6 or 7 seconds on tonight's Central News.  An ITV News Reporter was standing over the road from Birmingham's Moor Street Station, when the Bus slowly pulled up behind her and stopped at what i assume must be the traffic lights near the station entrance ?  The Bus was quite close to the TV Camera itself and so the side on view of it that you saw, basically filled up your TV screen !!!!

Soon afterwards on BBC Midlands Today, a News Reporter was standing by the statue of Sir Frank Whittle in Town (Coventry), when 4884 came by him in the background !

For any fans of "BRIGHTON & HOVE BUS & COACH", some of their Buses were seen on the Channel 5 News earlier tonight, as the company is trying to recruit more Women as Bus Drivers !  It was said that there are 9 times more Men as there are Women doing the job and so Brighton & Hove are trying to do their bit for diversity, by encourage more Women to become Drivers ?  There were a number of Buses to be seen in the news report, but all i was able to identify were: Scania Omnicity (YN05 HCE), which was a Driver Trainer vehicle.  Also seen were a Volvo B7TL (PL51 LDK) and a Scania Omnidekka (YN05 GZJ).

I've noticed here in Coventry at the moment, that National Express have got quite a number of women recruited as drivers now and it's really good to see that is, as years ago back in the "WMPTE" era (and later in the "WEST MIDLANDS TRAVEL" era to !), we only ever had a very very small handful of woman as drivers ! (Definitely less than 10, although to be honest, i don't remember ever seeing more than 5 ???).

It's quite possible it has visited Digbeth coach station, most of that batch did in the late 1970s on the Glasgow to Birmingham service. It wasn't unknown for Midland Red to 'borrow' them during layover and sent them out on local bus work.

82/87 branded MMC on Midlands Today on the report about Dudley Bus Station closing. Then in the trailer for Waterloo Road there was an Optare Solo looked like an older model as it had the Square/Rectangular Rear Lights as opposed to the Circular LED's it had an Orange Bumper and was mostly White Back. It looked like one of the kids on the show had pinched it. I assume it would be a Manchester based operator of that Solo as I think that's where Waterloo Road is set

In Mr Bates Vs The Post Office the real life documentary when they move to cover a local story they use a shot of The Bullring where an NX Platnium and Red and White E400 are outside. Also in the Drama a Stagecoach I think E200MMC features in the third/fourth episode in Ellesmere Port.

Just seen some archive footage of BCT and WMPTE on Central News (West Midlands edition) tonight. Article was about an Oldbury care home that has installed a "bus stop" to encourage memories from it's residents.

A Couple of CV Electrics were featured on Midlands outside UHC, there was a Harry Potter Electric on BBC News and BBC Midlands Today have done a Central News and have Birmingham City Centre in the background so you can see Moor Street, HS2, Primark and as a result there is also several NX buses.

This Town also features an old WMT or BCC Liveried Bus 6567 or 6765 I think on the 27 I assume a fictional 27 as it picked up the Irish Character from Chelmsley Wood I believe

It is 6757 in WMPTE livery on Coventry route 27. Commendable by the TV production company but I'm not going into the minutiae of Sandy Lane/Harnell Lane accuracy.

Well they said Chelmsley Wood was in Birmingham. By the early 1980s it was part of Solihull.

Yes I noticed that the diamond banqueting suite was renamed Villa Cross the Coach and Horses in West Bromwich was able to turned into the Happy Trouper surely they should have enough money to put a WMT Bus Stop and then after they had finished they put the TFWM Flag back up. If I did that at College as I did Media the Tutors would either say it couldn't be helped or that I could use Photoshop and then put a Flag over the TFWM Flag and then adding an 80's filter it would look authentic. They have money to replace it
