Title: Coventry service changes - 29th Aug 2021
Post by: JPC on July 17, 2021, 12:39:59 AM
As mooted amongst the NXWM threads there is also going to be a fair bit of changes to some services in and around Coventry, so I have listed here a summary of new/revised DVSA registrations known so far, served up with the usual it may be incorrect warning:

Service 5/5A (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580883/) - seemingly shortened to Radford (?)
Service 7/7A/7B (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580964/) - existing service 7 extends to replace the City - Bell Green segment of service 10/10A
Service 24 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580958/)  - replaces the 539 and extends from Kenilworth via Burton Green to Tile Hill
Service 25/25A (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580959/) - replaces the 580
Service 26 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580872/) - replaces the City Centre - Westwood Business Park segment of service 10A
Service 28 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580882/) - replaces the City Centre - Tile Hill segment of service 10
Service 29/29A (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580868/) - replaces service 1 with extensions at both ends (from Chapelfields to Radford and Walsgrave to Arena Park?)

These registrations are also amended and may just be timetables only : 3 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580848/) 13 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580844/) 14 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580858/) 17 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580996/) 18 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580851/) 21 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580846/) 85 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580955/)

They change the Coventry routes quite a lot don't they ::). It's like the old annual Old Hill/Cradley Heath changes, but on a bigger scale

Well in Jan 1974, this service operated: 24 Coventry Civic Airport (The Oak PH) – City, Broadgate. So the '24' will return to Baginton (?) albeit only relatively few journeys compared to the past!

Pretty-radical looking changes, I assume the 10 in its current form will cease to exist. Service 7 of old did serve the northeast side of Coventry.

The Everdon Rd area could be without a bus service next month - an idea previously floated, but not implemented.

Don't think I can recall so many changes - certainly going back the last decade (the 2022 period I'm sure, will look quite different to 2012, certainly just before the Feb 2012 changes). Off the top of my head circa-April 2006, summer 2010, Feb 2012, Sept 2019 and Aug 2020 all saw changes implemented.

I do like that the ex-deCourcey services are being incorporated rather than just strictly ran to tender and subsequently given up.

At times that I've seen the 580/85 in Rugby, they've always had a few passengers on them to my surprise (usually a Monday around midday).

Bit more information on the changes on bustimes, however, I'm not 100% sure how accurate this information is. Some of the most noticeable things were also mentioned above.

29/A - https://bustimes.org/registrations/PD0001111/815

"Withdrawn Walsgrave - Coventry. Re-routed Coventry - Chapelfields via existing 10 route to Canley Station then Glendower Avenue to Chapelfields. Extended from Chapelfields via Counden and Radford to Arena to replace existing 5 route. Evening/Sunday 29A added to Arena."

85 - https://bustimes.org/registrations/PD0001111/817

"Rerouted between UHCW and Coventry to partially replace route 1, 85S transferred to this registration"

The 29/29A is gonna be some route; 1 City - Chapelfields section & 10 City - Canley Station section plus 5 City - Arena Park via Coundon and Radford all covered by the service !

if we get substantial route and route number changes lets hope that something more informative
than "via Coventry" appears on displays and timetables

the 1 serves the train station from UHCW. Could the 85 route be extended again back to the station to cover the 1?

Ah, I suppose that sounds about right, the info from the registrations is still a hotch-potch but what will make sense would be the 29 (hourly Mon-Sat daytimes) still covering the current 1 route City to Chapelfields, and the 29A (hourly Evenings/Sundays) covering the current 10 route from City to Canley Station as this would replicate the current service pattern in Earlsdon - and unfortunately backtracks on the aspirations of abolishing Evening/Sunday only routes in the bus review of 2012.

I have a feeling this new cluster of services numbers (24-29) will be allocated/needs about 12 Enviro 200s, CV strength is 14.

It could be useful if the new 85 would swoop into Coventry Rail Station in the style of the X30 service, but when there is already a dozen or so buses (or up to 20 if you count all operators) per hour linking to and from the City Centre I suppose there's no chance at all.

Is there an intention to keep the 5 (as City - Coundon - Wallace Rd - Radford) daytimes - I can't quite work that bit out. There has been a lot of work going-on on Hollyfast Rd and Norman Place Rd, is the bus terminus on the latter going to re-emerge? And presumably the number '1' will disappear again.

An hourly 29 would be insufficient for the section between Westhill Road and Radford, so the 5 will obviously remain possibly going as far as Burnaby Rd/Holbrook Ln on most journeys.
There might be the option of the 29/29A taking an alternative route between Coundon and Radford i.e Moseley Ave (North) and Beake Ave or Scots Lane and Sadler Rd.
The registrations also shows 5A, 7A and 7B variants and I can only loosely guess the 7B is the Cardinal Wiseman school spur, the 7A being a more direct variant to Amazon and the 5A replaces the Diamond 42 - and I would be surprised if all that happens! - as usual it's just a waiting game now until all will be officially revealed.

In my previous post above I forget to include the 85 service in the assumed new cluster of E200 allocated services ;).

Furthermore, and after looking at Coundon Cycleway plans, yes it seems the turnaround on Norman Place Road is staying put and will be slightly reduced in size to allow the cycleway to veer behind it's 'floating' bus stop, today the short 5 journeys which are currently only scheduled on a Sunday are turning at the Brownshill Green Rd roundabout which in honestly I think should occur permanently and the turnaround mothballed, it's just one extra stop and has a significant spread of residential area nearby deserving of a more regular bus service.
Closer to the City Centre the plans also show intentions to close the busy junction of Barras Lane with Holyhead Road and open up a new junction on Upper Hill Street to/from the clockwise slip of the Ring Road.

Yes, I hadn't thought of that, but the Brownshill Green Rd/Norman Place Rd roundabout would be sensible. In fact, there are a number of roundabouts beyond that which could be used. Coventry city centre (and the other side of the Ring Road) is full of dead-end roads - so that would be one less.

So from a numbers point of view we lose: 1, 10/10A, 539, 580. But gain: 24, 25/25A, 26, 28, 29/29A - when was the last time a service 10 didn't run at all in Coventry ?

Regarding the 10 a very long time ago as it became Pool Meadow to Eastern Green renumbered from 19 in the major revisions in the early eighties a few years before de-regulation, having up to that point been Pool Meadow to Brownshill Green via Allesley Old Road.
Were those changes the last use of 29? It had been renumbered from 9/A because Wumpty only allowed letters for Anti Clockwise circulars. 9A had become 39.

Coventry did have a service 29 which I imagine started sometime around de-regulation and lasted until the April 2006 changes, a variant of the then service 19 (City-Canley) running in the early mornings, evenings and Sundays, taking in Spon End, Hearsall Common, Canley Station, Sheriff Ave, Charter Ave to Curriers Close.  Although Canley Station level crossing was closed in about 2004 and the service re-routed via Herald Ave it still lasted for two further years before being amalgamated to service 19.

Correct. From my own notes as at 1/4/06: 29 City Centre - Canley via Hearsall Common & Herald Avenue. I assume on 2/4/06 the changes mentioned above were implemented.

The City, Pool Meadow - Brownshill Green 10 commenced in Coventry Transport days (it was operating as at 1 Jan 1974 and quite possibly earlier than that) and ran until April 1985 in the PTE era. And the next 10 was basically a renumbered service 19 from that point, and I think the number has been in constant use since.

Found map from 1988 with 29 going via Canley Level Crossing with 19 going via highway to avoid delays at level crossing. In the same area I assume the mayor's recent announcement of Demand Responsive Transport in Cannon Park and Earlsdon will signal the demise of route 47.

Service 24 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580958/)  - replaces the 539 and extends from Kenilworth via Burton Green to Tile Hill
Service 25/25A (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580959/) - replaces the 580
Service 26 (https://www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk/search/find-registered-local-bus-services/details/580872/) - replaces the City Centre - Westwood Business Park segment of service 10A

Looks like Enviro200 840 was doing training duties today (https://bustimes.org/vehicles/179107?date=2021-08-04#journeys/154766836) for the 'new' 24 route,
The ultimate purpose of the 'Tile Hill' extension is to enhance the link from Burton Green into Kenilworth and I suppose it is probably only two journeys each way per day like the current 539 to/from Malthouse Lane - but still more useful than the existing once a week offering from A&M which hopefully continues for the needy residents of Balsall Common and Carol Green.

I have a feeling two lesser used journeys between Kenilworth Clock and Stoneleigh, i.e first trip from and last trip towards Kenilworth will run direct along Albion St in order to save just about enough time to cover the extension.  Looking forward now to finding out what's going to happen.

I suppose this could have been renumbered 39 (and the 580 to 80) rather than 24, 25 etc. The 585 lost the first '5' a while back (granted, not on Sunday).

5A is basically the old very short 6 service to Kingsbury Rd (which was actually numbered 5A until the late 70s). I assume the 5A/7A will use the terminus at Kingsbury Road (the bus shelter outside the Brooklands pub) rather than directly outside Morfa Gardens - unless they can turn around there? On the same theme, where does this extended 1 turn around?

Assume weekdays buses will stop at Morfa Gardens change destinations and drive on after three minute hesitation. On Sundays it still says Morfa Gardens so I assume bus will nip over to by then redundant Chapelfields turning circle and go back to city.

I've noticed that the 0734 14 service from Eastern Green now continues to Bluecoat School, and this is the same in the afternoon with a 14 leaving the school for 1515, which then continues to town and then on with the normal line of route.

This may have replaced Thandi's S4 service which ran around Eastern Green (very similar sections to the 14) and then on to Bluecoat. It looks to be doing the current 3S bit too from the City Centre.

Both the 14 and 18 have seemed to have 15 minute frequency during peak times too which is a plus!

Blimey, quite a few surprises ... my initial thoughts:

1 - I don't really understand the rerouting nor the Coundon extension, apart from giving an extra daytime bus per hour between City & Canley Station resulting in a imbalanced headway, there obviously was a plan for this to extend all the way to Arena Park which hasn't come to fruition, I suppose there has been some wrangling or disagreement with TfWM.  I don't expect this to last a long time in this form.
2 - Should be more reliable than current service.
5 - The Radford - Arena Park section has degraded to a hourly 'shopping service' and buses will be inefficiently parked at Arena for 27 mins which is probably a make shift due to the above.
7 - Similar to the pre-2006 route.
5A/7A - Rather short journeys to Coundon but also a harkback to the past.
9/9A - I suppose Stoney and Humphrey Burton's Rd have had it too good for too long.
18A - Nicely integrated with the existing 18 makes good sense and shouldn't bother Canley locals too much as from their perspective is an 'against flow' service, the current setup is typically one full and one empty bus nearly in unison.
19 - very surprised this is going to run via Leamington Road and A45 Kenpas Highway.
24/25/25A - all now run along Leamington Rd with stops added on St Martins Rd and Brentwood Avenue in Finham, a much improved hourly service as far as Baginton village/Rowley Rd - generally improved overall utilising more buses.

The re-routing of the 1 renders Queensland Avenue without a bus service - is that correct? An Earlsdon to Chapelfields link is maintained albeit by another route. I assume the Earlsdon area will benefit slightly with both the 1 & 2 running along Earlsdon Street (or do I have the routing of service 1 wrong).

Service 5 short journeys (assuming they do exist) will end at Burnaby Rd/Holbrook Lane or do the circle around Everdon Road and come back again?

The 1 goes via Corporation Street rather than via the station as well leaving Pool Meadow at xx.17
1 terminates at "The Cedars" in Coundon. It also runs non stop through Whoberley from Broad Lane to bottom of Grayswood Avenue because there are no stops in Glendower Avenue, plenty of parked cars!
The 2 goes same way as 10 at xx.02 and xx.32 from Pool Meadow.
Routes take more than hour to do round trip so 2 and 19 could interwork.
Handy way of converting Earlsdon to E200.

I assume then the 1 will traverse Albany Rd, Earlsdon St etc to Canley Station then head for Broad Lane, before dropping down Glendower Avenue (as you say, could be tight along there) and into Grayswood Avenue. Thereafter; Kingsbury Rd, Forefield Rd, Courtland Ave up to the Cedars roundabout. So no more 1 around Belvedere Road, Earlsdon Ave South/North and so-on. With the 5/5A running into Coundon - whats the point of this extension?

Couldn't the 2 just remain with the service number 10 - it now means all the bus stops along the current route 10 need changing City to Tile Hill (in fact on the other side of the city as well).

You make a valid point about the 10, indeed all stops in Earlsdon will have to change as 1 will have to be removed from Belvedere Road area as well.
If the cost of replacing all those 10 bus stops was stopped out of the salary of whoever decided to unnecessarily change the number (not only the flags but cost of staff going out to change them and TfWM backroom staffs time, bus maps etc.) I'm sure that person would take your advice.
You can't cost the aggrevation caused to front line staff who have deal with confused passengers.

From this, it looks like that it was originally going to be the 29/29A but there has been a variation to it which shows the 1 (City to Coundon).

The 85 and 85b is amended to takeover/cover the 1 route between Gosford St and University Hospital. (85s and 585s will continue to serve Walsgrave Rd and Ansty Rd).

During Mon-Sat daytimes every other bus will turn short at Jubilee Crescent, during the evenings and Sundays all journeys only operate as far as Burnaby Rd/Holbrook Lane - and these also seem set to be parked up here for over half a hour (unless there is some sneaky interworking I haven't yet figured out).  Nothing is scheduled to turnaround at Norman Place Rd anymore - that turnaround what's having or had some costly work done to it! ::)   I hope you don't mind me saying it all smells like a right botch up.

So the 5 (along with parallel for a bit 5A to Coundon, but not at Norman Place Rd!) will end at Radford (Jubilee Cres) and further along at Burnaby Rd (is that to be called 'Radford' as well?). Are the longer 5 journeys towards the Arena Shopping Park via Everdon Rd to be maintained also. Seems rather complex for what was a fairly simple set-up originally.

Coundon will appear as the terminal point on three different services then (1, 5A, 7A) who'd have thought it! Suddenly the areas seems blessed with bus services. The 7A shorter journeys to boost services in that particular district, I assume.

Traveline is showing that there is an 0710 service 85 and also a 0710 service 85S, with the 585S running five minutes later. This might be why the school services are running direct, as the 85 has a school-variant time as well.

Traveline shows 585S going via Ansty Road and 85 going via Binley Road.
There are no intermediate timing points added to 85/A leading to confusion as Bustimes doesn't  appreciate route still has existing route beyond route change date. Bustimes has the ability to cope with revised routes.
85S and 585S are both shown as operating as "closed door" services for school children only, although this is unlikely in the case of the "85S".

Looking back over time the 1 and the 585 both served the train station. Will the new 85 route call in at the station? If not then it will be a bad move for bus users.

It looks like it won't which doesn't make sense really.. The 1 previously served it and this route is covering part of it..

Travellers to Amazon can make use of the regular 'Marystow Close' stop on Browns Lane and take a two minute walk down Fenton Road - quicker than sitting on the bus for an extra 5 - 7 minutes.

NXC doesn't give any indication of the 19 as operating via Leamington Rd and Kenpas Highway - so I'm thinking this could be a mistake in timetable data, traveline maps etc, and the 19 will still use Kenilworth Road ?

I have a document on my pc detailing the NXC routes - I assume this is correct for the revised 1 (and new) 2:

1 City (Pool Meadow) - Coundon via Chapelfields

Route 1 towards Coventry:
Westhill Road, Courtland Avenue, Forfield Road, Kingsbury Road, Grayswood Avenue, Glendower Avenue, Broad Lane, Dolomite Avenue, Canley Rail Station, Canley Road, Beechwood Avenue, Rochester Road, Radcliffe Road, Earlsdon Street, Albany Road, The Butts, Croft Road, Queen Victoria Road, Corporation Street, Hales Street, Fairfax Street, Priory Street, Pool Meadow Bus Station.

Route 1 towards Coundon:
Pool Meadow Bus Station, Hales Street, Trinity Street, Ironmonger Row, The Burges, Corporation Street, Queen Victoria Road, Croft Road, The Butts, Albany Road, Earlsdon Street, Radcliffe Road, Rochester Road, Beechwood Avenue, Canley Road, Canley Rail Station, Dolomite Avenue, Broad Lane, Grayswood Avenue, Kingsbury Road, Forfield Road, Courtland Avenue, Westhill Road.

Would seem so as under 10 heading says 19 replaces 10A

Yes, I preferred it when they showed the full, exact routing. Now its a bit of guesswork, although you can work most of it out on various websites.

Silly question coming up; but the 19 will have to use Leamington Road (instead of Kenilworth Rd) if it's going to traverse Humphrey Burtons Road etc ? Or will it do a brief double-back, using Kenilworth Rd instead!

Google maps bus stop data suggests that it'll use Leamington Road.

It looks like it won't which doesn't make sense really.. The 1 previously served it and this route is covering part of it..
Got it now. The X30 goes along the Ansty Rd to the station and is back to 30 min freq. so will cover what the 1 and 585 used to for the station.

875 looks to have done the new 19 earlier this morning and it used Leamington Road and Kenpas Highway - https://bustimes.org/vehicles/192514?date=2021-08-19#journeys/159282093

Indeed NXC have since added Leamington Rd & Kenpas Hwy on their webpage, I'm still surprised by the choice of route and whilst it may be evaluation and to some extent competitive against part of the Stagecoach 60 service it is now leading me to think it may be precursor for an eventual dropping of the 9A service and divert of the 19 via Mantilla Drive.

Whilst on the subject of Leamington Rd the 9/9A seems to be reducing from 8 bus to 7 bus so more chances of an electric bus operating on other services.

The new 1, 85/85B, and 24/25 appears to all interwork at Pool Meadow generally in that order utilizing in the main 7 buses - a haven for E200s no doubt.

Humphrey Burton's Rd etc goes from a regular 9/9A service to a, err, not so regular number 19.

I assume the 85/85B will mirror exactly the current 1 from the city centre to UHCW/Walsgrave area (via New Century Park) and so includes that loop around Brade Drive, Boswell Drive and so on.

No, the 85/85B will not serve Brade Drive loop beyond the hospital but the area will still have the 20C service.

Bus stops flags have appeared on the Leamington Road by War Memorial Park.
They have 9, 9A, 19, 24, 25, 25A.
New bus stop flags have appeared adjacent to Canley Station with 1, 2 and 10 on!
The 10 lives on!

Yes, it would appear so, and bustimes will hopefully reveal this when the time comes, the 19 departures are generally five minutes after a 2 arrival and the 2 departures are generally twelve minutes after a 19 arrival - the shorter then longer dropback seems appropriate as the 19 service is more likely to suffer with traffic related delays.

This doesn't surprise me, particularly when we've already noticed Traveline et al still suggesting the 10/10A are ongoing.

Looking on the Traveline website (I assume still a credible source of information) it doesn't seem to show the 85 loop around New Century Park - Brindle Ave, Gwendolyn Drive, Weir Way, Second Ave and Allard Way. That is still occurring I presume, not that there seems to be much passenger activity on those roads.

The current map of the 1 also doesn't, so I wouldn't necessarily read too much into that

Coventry always increases services the last week of September as it's when the Universities return

Yes - on the relevant University routes 11 and 12X but all other ongoing services seem to have links to a timetable dated 26th September which are identical to 29th August timetables, I guess it could be some sort of flaw in the new timetable generator on the NX website causing this?

Going back to the 85. It is a Sunday service today and Bh Monday so SC is the 85A operator and it uses the old route down the Ansty Rd to Gosford Green. On Tuesday NXC is the operator so will use the new route taking part of the old 1 route and then down the Binley Rd.
Crazy world.

Yes, it was only just last night I spotted this renumbering on the Traveline website, this most likely was specified by the county council and there's no mention on the Stagecoach website - I guess Stagecoach would rather number it "X85" if it was their own commercial service.

A new stop on Ball Hill without 85 etc has route 585, so whether this was another late change who knows.
Stagecoach 85A I saw was still displaying 585 today. The timetable at stop in Pool Meadow still has 585 timetable.
Many stops in city remain to have updated stop flags or timetable panels or both. Even the next stop audio and visual info on rerouted electric bus routes 9/9A hasn't been updated.

Front line staff are left to bear the brunt of passengers frustrations.
This morning a lady said to the Bus Station Supervisor
"You've changed your bus services" to which he replied "Madam with respect I didn't change them".

Lessons can and should be learnt for the future from this dismal performance by those in influencial positions who are ultimately responsible. This will be little comfort for whoever occupies the "here to help" podium in Pool Meadow on Tuesday.

To add to this the spur to Ashlawn School, which traveline initially proclaimed would continue as 585S via Ansty Rd, now runs as a '85' service so runs via Binley Rd etc. - last minute tinkering for simplifying the numbering no doubt, the number 585 finally no longer used.
