4160 & 4188 now back on strength at WN
4183 back on strength at BC
4132; 4162 in use at YW
4129 in use at CV
4181 at BC fit for use but not being used currently
Why are 4181/3 at BC? They can't be used on anything because of the emissions.
Thanks for the update on 4289, any idea when it's returning to PB?.
Not sure if you can say but any idea how long 4132/4162 are staying at YW
@Tony Thanks

They can be used on the X70 for a start, although that's not what they're for

Before you become the AQPS police perhaps check what the rules are?
Euro four applies to services with a basic 3 buses per hour. The X70 at 2 buses per hour is alright at Euro 3
As a matter of interest what is the penalty for sending a non-compliant vehicle into the LEZ?

4192 has been donated to Coventry College (not sure if that's City College, Coventry or the 'Coventry College' within Cov Uni). 4201 I assume is just reserve not in use/withdrawn. If you look on Tony's monthly changes 4248 (ex-WB) is also withdrawn.

4289 has been returned to garage over the weekend. It was still sporting trade plates and 'Captain Underpants' advert which is months old. So it shows how long it has been away. I presume it may go in for repaint first
Is 4492 away from the garage as I've been trying to find it for weeks to no avail?

4280 should follow, that one looks a right mess. Happy to hear 4289 has come back, but it looks dreadful, so it should be due for its repaint.

MOT maybe? YW do AG MOTs, they also did CVs MOTs. I'm not sure if that's still the case.
Not sure what the rules and regs are with buses though, as cars don't need to be MOTd until after 3 years old. Maybe Tony can confirm.

That's quite a sizeable list, add those to the vehicles in paint and that's around 40. Plus there's bound to be buses parked in garages for routine maintenance and break downs.
Is this quite normal or are things a little tight for operational buses? Is the figure of around 10% spare still right?

As well as general engineering spares, there is a paint float, so buses in paint don't come out of the general total, and also a 'Road Ready Reserve' which can help out any garage in need which is why 4180, 4181 & 4185 are swapping around.

I was out for a ride on my scooter yesterday and ended up at an island just south of Bell End in Worcestershire, where I saw a crimson Omnilink coming the other way. I didn't get to see which one it was, but I think it may have had some sort of price branding on it? If anyone knows which one it was and what it was doing down there, it'd be much appreciated.

I honestly hadn't realised there were that many Bell Ends until I read this post. I'm aware of the one in Rowley Regis but hadn't realised there was one in Worcestershire until now.

I'm pretty sure that one in Rowley Regis is just a street, whereas there's an actual village called Bell End, complete with a service station and Bell Hall. It's just east of Belbroughton, so the name does kinda make sense.

Interesting that only 6790 is currently at Plaxtons. What is the progress on the smart hybrid conversions for 6855-92?
From what I can tell it is still only 6855/6 that have been done, and they've been back in service for quite a while. Has the roll out been put on hold?
It's also a sobering thought that if whatever Paul Clark are doing to 5409 gets rolled out across all 30, based on the time taken so far, it would take 150 months (over 10 years)....?!
I've just visited Paul Clark Services website http://www.paulclarkservices.co.uk/ and you can clearly see 5409 just inside the door in its green-based livery if you scroll the photos.

In passing, I believe I saw a Gemini on Fazeley Street. Could it be 4528, perhaps?

It could be any Gemini. They go there to get steam cleaned underneath, as far as I know.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the intel. It's still a little alien to me how buses are sent to different garages for different purposes..
Having said that, just saw 4512 in Coventry. MOT?

Probably correct as I'm sure it's been mentioned on here that AG & YW vehicles go to CV for their MOT.
Noticed today that 1942 is back at WB was on the 49.
Also 1819 has appeared at WB possibly for Floor Repairs?

Could be there for any sort of reason. It won't be getting fully repainted and branding is done in house at its home garage.
2223 had front end RTC damage. Will more than likely getting the repairs repainted
4799 back at PB currently on 33 just left Kingstanding circle toward city.
There's PB Buses going past Sandwell. why is it?
probably going to WB for MOT

I don't. Its batteries are flat where it has been parked so long at AG, so I cannot see where it is until someone starts it>

It was meant to be being converted from Hybrid to standard diesel as a trial, but as it's been there a year or more I think they must have taken it hostage...

To be honest if every vehicle conversion takes this long, the fleet will be withdrawn long before its finished.

I thought buses go to Pensnett Graveyard to fully depreciate, not PCS.
We can only guess why it's been so long! Some sort of dispute?
I suppose the main question is, do the bus(es) actually need converting from hybrid to standard diesel. Haven't we been here before, gas bus to standard diesel??

Yes, because the E400H's are unreliable / costly to maintain & at around the age they're age will mostly likely need their batteries replacing which is big money.

So are the Volvo B5LH better, or are they also unreliable and costly to maintain?
Will these also be converted?
Also does anyone know whats happened to 5505, it seems to have been away since last July?
Are NX going to convert all of the 48 Hybrids in the WM and Dundee fleets?

PCS (Paul Clark Services) took on 5409 as far back as Nov 2017 (well, that's when it was first reported in this thread) and it is still there! The phone calls between NXWM and PCS must be interesting... "is it nearly ready yet" - while, err, not quite, won't be long now though!"

Yes - EYMS are converting them to Euro 6 diesel therefore they will no longer be hybrids.

Not necessarily that quickly. As you do some conversions you get spare decent batteries and traction motors which are the expensive parts to replace and cause the conversions.

At the bottom of the page (white bit just above the black footer) you can download a report showing the replacement cost of the main parts
If I understand these things correctly I believe the Volvos being parallel hybrids can operate with the batteries in a much poorer state because the engine can power the bus by itself without help from the batteries.

Just out of interest, what is the approximate cost of converting one of these diesel-electric hybrid buses to 'full-diesel'?
I can appreciate that it is probably not cheap, but compared to the cost of replacing batteries etc it would probably work out to be more economic considering the lifespan of the vehicle.
But keeping things in balance, I can also see where people may get angry because NX Bus were given 'taxpayers money' to 'invest' in 'clean' hybrid buses, only to then later convert them into 'dirty polluting' diesel buses in order to save money on operating costs.
For the record, I know it is not the case that NX were 'given' these buses, and did have to contribute towards their cost, so I can fully appreciate the commercial decision that NX have made. I do recall seeing some similar kind of document, that demonstrated that the Volvo B5LH hybrids were proving to be superior to the ADL E400Hs after testing. Which is probably why they are still going strong.

Your argument doesn't stand up about making them into dirty diesel as they were only Euro5 as hybrid, but are being made Euro 6 diesel so much cleaner. The only 'green' advantage of hybrid is they do more mpg, so produce less carbon emissions but as you can see from the report I linked to these are already down to normal diesel mpg so no advantage whosoever. NXWM paid the full price of the bus as a standard diesel and got the grant to pay for the hybrid system on top. As it is that part that needs replacing (traction motor and batteries) perhaps we could give the green fund their broken bits back they paid for.
Does this mean that the hybrids will not last as long as they would if they were hybrids?
Also, nice use of the meme.
Will they keep the green interiors? Or will they be refurbished gaining the standard moquette?
Is there any reason why the Hyrbids on the 61/63 don't have any announcements. As they used to when they were on the 22/23?
Probably haven't bothered to record them.

I was thinking that as well. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact that stop announcements are a platinum feature. The Phil Upton announcements worked (some of the stop James are inaccurate though) when a hybrid was heading towards Birmingham between the time that the 23 went Platinum and the London style announcements were introduced. I'm not sure if they still work now however.

I wasn't trying to make an argument, I agree with your comments. I was merely suggesting 'possible complaints' that those on the other side of the discussion might have.
I'm going to presume that the cost of converting these hybrids back into 'standard' diesel buses, is equal to or less than the cost of replacing the 'worn out' components (battery and/or traction motor), especially if those components would also need replacing again in a few more years.
QuoteAs it is that part that needs replacing (traction motor and batteries) perhaps we could give the green fund their broken bits back they paid for

Given that they're converting to full diesel operation what was the point of the hybrids in the first place?

see the report I linked to above. They produced considerable fuel savings as hybrids from new. The Volvos still do.
Do the conversions retain the 4 cylinder Cummins? You'd wonder if 4.5 litres was enough, though the Streetdecks are fine with 4.9litres.
