A 172 (336 I think...), 2143 Kidderminster to Stourbridge Junction. Handy that my best friend's house is right by the station!!

Jesus these 172s really shift through the gears, especially in the long stretch between Kidder and Hagley (didn't stop at Blakedown). Brilliant trains!

The gear shifts are due to the mechanical transmission  ;D. I take it you didn't go on 79336 (the non-toilet carriage of 172 336/DMSO (whatever it's called)), basically it sounds like it's over-revving:
Class 153, 155 and 156. The Super Sprinters

Was it the one with the loo in, the middle one or the other one?

It was one of the end ones, don't know whether there was a loo...

I passed through SGB almost the same time as you; I caught the slightly late running 17:19 from the Hawthorns to Cradley Heath on my way back from work
