General Discussion & Questions / Transport for Wales
April 14, 2019, 02:30:50 PM
Mod's note: Transport For Wales took over operation of services from Arriva Trains Wales in October 2018 - Stu.

Transport for Wales have received 5 class 153s from Great Western Railway:

  • 153325 & 153333 - both ex London Midland
  • 153329, 153361, 153369 - in First Great Western livery

It's my understanding all units moved as an ECS from Exeter St David's to Cardiff Canton Sidings earlier this month. Have they been used in service yet?

What's the last journey you made by public transport
Mine is:
1923 New Street - Smethwick Galton Bridge 158839 + 158821
Still in pursuit of 1588823 to complete my set, but it seems to be eluding me

I'm not sure whether this type of thread's been done before, and I'm not gonna bother making a poll, because there's so many buses to choose from, someone else can if they want. What's your least favourite type of bus? For me, it's the Hybrids, I have absolutely no interest in them, obviously good for the environment ;), but they have no personality, no character, nothing that makes you turn around and admire it. Not to mention their counterparts have been sounding engines, particularly the Enviro 400/Trident

Oldbury Road, Smethwick (towards Oldbury) has been closed by the police, not exactly sure why. The 80/87 will more than likely carry on from Smethwick High St, to St Paul's Road then onto Mallin Street before rejoining the Oldbury Road. The 46 will probably turn left onto St Paul's Road instead of right, then turn left onto Mallin Street joining the 48/49/129 to West Bromwich

The Archive / New Year's Resolutions?
December 30, 2013, 11:05:21 PM
Sorry if this is off-topic. Delete it if you wish, but I was wondering what people's New Year's Resolutions are. As far as spotting goes, I want to:
Photograph all remaining ATW Class 158s - I only need 158823, 158825, 158836, 158838
Photograph all remaining LM Class 323s - I only need 323203, 323208, 323214, 323218

Then once that's done
Photograph all remaining LM Class 153s - I only need 153356, 153365, 153366
Get updated photos of LM Class 172s (already got them all)

And..
Photograph a Class 156 by the end of the year

Which routes are currently double deck that don't need to be?

I'll start it off with this Stagecoach Manchester Enviro 400 being thrashed, it sounds incredible, as do all Voith Tridents:

The Archive / What got you into buses?
October 04, 2013, 01:00:00 AM
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the thread. What got you into buses and/or trains?
For me, I was diagnosed with autism when I was young, and took a liking to Metrobuses, which ran on all my local routes at the time, I used to sit at the front in the upper saloon, hold onto the handle bars and pretend I was driving the bus and ever since then I've just been interested in buses. As I grew up I started to collect timetables and analyse them to death - frequencies, length of journeys, PVR etc.

My interest in trains started when I first caught a Class 150 Sprinter and took a liking to them, when the majority of them left the West Midlands, I took a liking to the 153s, and it just went on from there, like with the buses, I memorise timetables, diagram patterns, amount of carriages, unusual frequency patterns etc.

The Archive / Routes that use different buses on Sundays
September 10, 2013, 01:29:41 PM
A prime example would be the 255/256, they are both Trident operated Monday-Saturday and B7RLE operated on Sundays

The Archive / Routes that see the most variety of buses
September 08, 2013, 10:15:51 PM
Which routes see a big variety of buses. I'd nominate the 1 from AG and the 83/89 (WB), which sees all types of Volvo B7TL & Mercedes Benz O405N regularly
#11
Which service(s) requires a change (whether it be frequency, route, bus type etc) and why do they require this change?
#12
Which routes require an evening and/or Sunday service that don't currently have one?
I would love to see an evening and Sunday service on the 129, although it would probably never happen

Not wishing to disturb the 'New 50 Branding' thread, which buses are the most frequent in the UK? In the West Midlands, the 50 is the most frequent route, the 59 has the highest evening frequency of every 12 minutes and the 33/51 & 55/A/94 have the highest combined frequency of every 3/4 minutes. What about other areas in the UK?

National Express West Midlands / 289 suggestion
June 13, 2013, 01:53:59 PM
I have a suggestion on what could be done with the 289, because at the moment, it is dying, I got it and I was the only passenger to Old Hill. Feel free to shoot me down.

I would further curtail the 289, so it only operates between either Rowley Regis Hospital and West Bromwich, or Blackheath and West Bromwich, so it can act as a local service to West Bromwich for those living in Rowley Village, Lion Farm & Portway.

Then I would extend the 205 to either Old Hill or Merry Hill, giving Brickhouse Farm a route to Dudley, maintaining a direct service to Blackheath, and in the Dudley Wood area retaining a service to Blackheath.

That's just my suggestion anyway, feel free to shoot me down but I don't see much point terminating a route in Old Hill

This can be novelty. Realistic constraints don't have to be involved when making a decision. Which buses deserve new buses? I would nominate the 16, it's PB's most frequent route and it's still allocated sub-standard B7TL ALX and Gemini
#16
Similar thread to the one that Matt posted. Which Volvo B7TL gearbox do you prefer? ZF or Voith? To avoid confusion, all NXWM ALX 400 bodied Volvo B7TL are Voith, and all NXWM Wright Eclipse Gemini are ZF. Also all NXC ALX 400 bodied Volvo B7TL are ZF and all NXC Wright Eclipse Gemini are Voith

National Express West Midlands / Missing Sets
March 16, 2013, 10:10:31 PM
Hi all,

I'm not sure whether this thread will catch on or not, but I think it would be a useful one for us photographers, who are trying to complete sets. Where if you're missing a certain bus from your collection, for instance, 4273, for example, if someone has seen that bus, they can alert the person looking for it, what route it was on, for example, 907, so the photography knows where to find that particular bus  :)

The Archive / Unusual Workings February 2013

1523 on 46. This should be rare with E200s now allocated to this route

Just a thread where users can put a link to their bus/train photography accounts. Mine's below:

My photography is mainly train focused, but I do take the odd bus photos.
