Not sure if it's worth a mention, but yesterday I received a notification (i.e. "Profile [1]") for a mention which had been posted on a previous date, which I had already looked at

Mentions not working properly for me either, Winston mentioned me last night, but didn't get a {1} in my profile although the mention is there and no email either.

I've unticked the email to notify of mentions box, as I can see it getting irritating (although I've only been mentioned a couple of times already!)

Still, this was what appeared the last two time before I turned it off:

QuoteSh4318 mentioned you in the post "Matt, you have been mentioned at a post in West Midlands Buses in Photographs...Forum", you can view the post at http://wmbusphotos.com/forum/index.php?msg=98571

Not a 'bug' as such, but somehow the GRS Travel thread has become merged into the 'Avin A Larf' thread?  :-\

@Stu @the trainbasher @SMK

GRS & Telford Garages threads demerged & re-instated as previous

After the maintenance, unfortunately, the @member somehow no longer works anymore. It just shows @<name>. For example, look up the previous comment.

I can assure you that it is not.

Turns out the core theme directory somehow corrupted itself. A simple force master reset did the trick, good as new. As for the post count, it'll be removed shortly.

I've lost my avatar when the post count re-appeared, if I try & re-load a new/existing jpeg, I get the following error message:

An Error Has Occurred!

The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Something has corrupted the whole upload & theme related directories.

The management are working hard to fix the problem.

Bit of a weird one this... I can only access the forum by going onto the home page and clicking the link to the forum, or via a search engine.

If I try to get on via a bookmark or typing the URL in directly, I get a HTTP 403 Forbidden!

I had the same problem on my phone at home last night.

Just tried the direct link your suggesting...

That happens occasionally for a few reasons, normally clears within a few minutes, when it doesn't is when there are problems which screws the whole thing up

Bit of an annoying one, I can only use the forum on my PC since about 18:45 this evening. If I try and use it on my phone (regardless of whether on mobile data or connected to wifi) it tells me I am banned indefinitely with the reason "Jade, you were banned for life!"

@Matt have you tried clearing your phones internet history?
for some reason when I go to the library it says sorry your banned

It must be seeing into the future then!
That made my day  :D
What is your problem @trident4370 and @Nathan its not like ive dropped a ten tonne stone on you !!!

No but you have been posting ten tonne of crap recently.

@Matt - You'd have to reset your dynamic IP. PM me for further assistance.

"Avin a larf" has been locked, looks like a bug or error as no reason was given, not the first time a thread has locked itself

As I posted yesterday I am going to lock all the non bus/train threads. They all get far to silly and clogging up the list of unread items

The whole idea of this forum is to discuss bus and train matters. If you want to discuss anything else do it on Facebook or any of the other general social media

No problems here, I'm using Firefox in Linux Mint KDE, and I just tried Chromium (open-source version of Chrome) too.

Probably a glitch in your Chrome and how it's rendering webpages. Try closing and starting it again.

Possibly a problem with my phone but....
Apparently I've been banned from the forum for a "personal attack in the round trips thread, since become permanent"
Second time in a couple of weeks this has happened, yet I can still get on via me laptop

@Kevin - it's because you're using mobile internet & must be in an area/using the same mobile network where the person that was banned was / was also using, your laptop will be fine. If you have a frequent issue accessing the forum off your mobile, let me know as soon as you can afterwards & I'll unblock that IP address, HTH, Winston

@Winston its still blocking me if I'm using WiFi on my phone though.
Has happened before and suddenly started allowing me back on again after a couple of days

It happened to me a couple of months ago, I got banned for a personal attack in the round trips thread to, on my laptop because I use mobile broadband, was quite distressing at the time as I couldn't understand what i had done. managed to contact Winston on another device and it was soon solved.

@Liverpool Street , the problem appears to be that the 'attachments' directory (where uploaded avatars and attachments are stored) does not exist.

I don't have access to the webserver, so can't check this out or fix it myself.

EDIT: having examined the server paths, I believe the attachments directory is misconfigured. I have added a new path (which I believe should be correct as per the current SMF configuration), and uploading a new avatar appears to have worked.
This probably means that all previous uploaded attachments and avatars are lost though.

It seems that the ability to delete comments is gone. I'm sure that this is intentional but it seems whoever did it has probably limited the starting new topics feature at the same time for normal members.

Sorry guys, my bad. I had intended to restrict the starting of new topics just in the Notices board, but had altered the wrong permission settings in error.

This has now been corrected, and you can all now create new topics in all other boards, except the Notices board. If this still isn't the case, please let me know here.

On the subject of deleting posts, this is intentional. Members can no longer delete their own posts - this has happened in the past and it causes the 'flow' of discussions in a topic to become disrupted. You can still use the Modify button to make corrections, but if you do wish a post to be deleted, please use the Report button and an Admin/Moderator will delete it for you.

@Stu , have you also stopped people being able to comment on posts in the "Notice" board?

Hi Cheese,

It is likely that as you're using a mobile device, your network provider has assigned you a 'recycled' IP address, which has previously been used by someone banned from the forum before.

Please PM me with your IP address from your phone when you get this error trying to log in, and I will look to see if I can alter the ban trigger accordingly.

You can find your IP address by visiting https://www.whatismyip.com/ in your mobile browser.

Alternatively, you may find that if you restart your phone, your mobile network provider will assign you a different IP address anyway. Try that first.

Not necessarily an error as such, but an issue with the forum now
With the extra NX garage threads now created, the NX page is mostly stickied topics. Any possibility of separating them out completely?

We are aware there is an issue and it is being looked into. Attachments and uploaded avatars also appear to be unavailable at the moment.

I'd advise anyone using any of the 'alternative' themes to switch back to the 'default SMF' theme for now.

The forum logo in the 'default' SMF theme is/was stored on TinyPic, a free image hosting site that is closing down.

See: http://tinypic.com/

QuoteTinyPic is shutting down

Due to an inability to support a high-quality free digital service that derives 100% of its revenue from ever declining on-site revenues, TinyPic will be permanently shutting down on September 16, 2019. Because we want to give you as much notice and information as possible during our transition, please carefully review the following information.
What Should You Do Now?

If you have a TinyPic user account, login and download all of the images you wish to preserve. Sorry, bulk download is not an option on TinyPic so you will need to download each image separately.
IMPORTANT DATES:

August 20, 2019 - no new images may be uploaded on TinyPic.

September 9, 2019 - hosted images will no longer be viewable on 3rd party websites. Because we are an anonymous hosting site and therefore cannot provide notice by e-mail to our users, we have opted to replace all hosted images with a temporary message directing them to this notice.

September 16, 2019 - last day for TinyPic account holders to access their accounts and download their images.

I'll get this corrected shortly, but in the meantime if anyone here was using TinyPic to host images, now is a good time to go into your account and retrieve them all.

For anyone still using the 'default' SMF theme to view this forum, you might like to try one of the 'responsive' themes that we have available, particularly if you're using a mobile device to view the forum!

When filling out the form to become a member of the forum, it seems like one of the questions is outdated - it asks you to state the bus route from Wolverhampton-Birmingham. With the changes NXWM made in 2018, the old route 126 was replaced by the X7/8 (https://nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands/dudley-sandwell-service-changes/route-126), and so the 126 started to terminate at Dudley instead of Wolverhampton. However the question still requires you to put in 126, and will not accept X7 or X8, which got me a bit baffled haha (but I got there eventually). From what I saw, all of the other questions still seem viable. Maybe someone could review the questions to ensure they are all in good shape? Thanks  ;D ;D

Could it be possible to change the URL that directs you back to the main site to a https link?

Is there a particular reason for this request?

For a 'secure' HTTPS connection, it would require @Tony to pay for an SSL certificate for this domain.

HTTPS is strongly recommended for ecommerce websites, but I know the likes of Google are trying to push all website owners to have SSL encryption available.

Personally, unless your website is handling or storing extremely confidential details, such as card payment transactions, and personally identifiable information such as name/address/date-of-birth etc, I don't think SSL/HTTPS is actually needed. There might be a case for the forum to have such encryption, but I don't think the main photo site does at all.

Yes, I already pay around £200 per year for the domain, the hosting, security etc, I don't see the need for HTTPS for 80,000 photos in the public domain.

I have had that problem before as well, where it automatically puts the 's' in, then tells you the link doesn't work, so no apologies necessary, I know where you are coming from now you have posted that.

No problem at all, thanks for the explanation.

Just out of interest, which 'antivirus protection' is this?

Readers here might find it hard to believe that I haven't subscribed to any anti-virus software for several years (apart from the Windows Defender built in to Windows 10), and I can't remember the last time my PC got infected with any virus or malware...

Let's encrypt do offer free SSL certificates.

If you scroll down a bit, you'll find that it is legitimate.

Like Stu said though, it's not strictly necessary.

Likewise, I used to use Avast back in the day, but I don't see a need anymore. Windows Defender, and generally being sensible with what sites you visit and what you download, does just fine these days.

Yep, I've used it before, the only downside is that you need to renew the certificate, I think every 6 months, although the Wordpress site I ran in the past did have a plugin that did that for you.

Let's encrypt do offer free SSL certificates.

Yes, I have heard of them before. But it depends on your hosting provider really; my previous web host would still charge an annual fee to set up and install these 'free certificates'.

Thankfully for my own websites I now have a new provider who include provision of 'free' SSL certificates at no extra charge.  ;D

Good afternoon,

Sorry to bother you all again, but I appear to be having issues where half of the text is missing from certain parts of each page.

It's like this for me in the Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers.

I would've attached a screenshot, but it gives an error message saying the upload folder cannot current be written, so there may be an issue with the forum software.

Thanks,

@Stu Can you see if you can sort please?

The actual error I'm getting is:

"The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

I just tried again and got the same error.

EDIT (I think): Also sometimes getting this error message on a white screen: User 'smp18B8STha' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 300000)

The default theme's directory is wrong, please correct it

I'm getting a similar issue it seems, but I have/had one of the alternate themes selected, which is also giving me issues.

Similarly their may be a few new bugs and errors on the main site.

Any found gratefully received. Updates will be different from today, they will gradually appear as I change pages, instead of one bulk update overnight, so this may cause a few temporary broken links while being updated, so please give any of those until the next day first.

Thanks

That's now fixed, attachments and avatars should be visible again now.

It was still there, but for some reason wasn't visible to guests, only for logged-in members.

It's back now

Yes, I've been getting this too since yesterday. As the forum doesn't appear to be being overloaded, I'm guessing that @Tony 's webhost is having problems with their database server?

Still problematical for me this morning. One of my grand kids suggested I may have a problem with my bandwidth which means absolutely nothing to an oldie like me. LOL .  :embarrassed:

I have resolved this now, your ISP had allocated you a 'dynamic' IP address that was previously used by a member now since banned.
